Community Action
A Message from the
Executive Director, Renée Bruce
Leading the way to eliminate conditions of poverty in Washington County is a big task, and it requires an effort that is bigger than one organization.  Fortunately we live in a place where partnership and collaboration is the rule.  Our ability to meet the needs of over 32,000 friends, family and neighbors only happens because of the amazing partnerships - public and private, big and small - that we have across Washington County.  We take care of each other here.  We believe that we can make a difference for every person who walks through our doors.  And we believe that our work strengthens our community, enabling it to thrive.
Partnering to Help Refugees in Washington County
Moving to a new city always has its challenges, from figuring out where the nearest grocery store is to making new friends.  Now imagine how hard it must if you don't know the language, the culture, and are recovering from the trauma of fleeing your home - that's the reality faced by refugees in Washington County today.
Integrating refugee communities involves a lot of support.  Recently Community Action's Child Care Resource & Referral (CCR&R) has partnered with Immigrant & Refugee Community Organization (IRCO) to help refugee communities develop culturally specific child care businesses.  As refugee families pursue employment opportunities, access to affordable child care is vital, which in turn creates in-home child care business opportunities within the refugee community to help meet that need.  CCR&R provides the training and resources to help these in-home child care providers become licensed with the state, and empower them to fill a critical need in their community.
