19 families served to date, 47 children and 75 people total, 54 day average stay

We are making wonderful progress on the Backyard Project here at the Day Center.  We have raised $51,000 of the $56,000 needed to complete the project and have completed the drainage portion so our backyard does not flood anymore.  We are preparing to move forward with the next step of regrading and sodding and then putting up the fence to secure the children in our program and we are very excited!

This is what used to happen in our backyard when it rained.

Thanks to Hazeltine Nurseries, we now have a drain so no more standing water!

I would also like to introduce our new Family Service Coordinator, Keith Cranmer, to those of you who have not yet met him.  Please stop in and say Hi!

I was just looking at our data with the Family Service Coordinator, and the Barth family was with us for an unusually long amount of time, 182 days.  Our program is generally supposed to be 60-90 days but this single mom could just not catch a break no matter how hard she tried.  I am so proud of her and the kids for sticking it out and managing to do so well (I know moving each week gets tough on everyone quickly).  I am happy to say the family is now housed and mom was even able to pay 6 months rent up front while still having money saved.  I think many people take for granted being able to have alone time with your family and just simple things like being able to cook a meal for your kids.  As you can see from the pictures she sent me, they are definitely enjoying having their own space again!  And if you look closely, you will see the Welcome Home Baskets provided by a group with one of our coordinators, Kathleen Englert.  Thank you so much Kathleen and let everyone who assists know that the families really do appreciate it!

List of Day Center needs for our families
  • Speedway $15 fuel only gas cards

  • Frozen roasts or hamburger *follow-up care

  • Publix and Walmart gift cards *follow-up care and **support of sized items
  • Store bought Frozen meals (like lasagna or casserole) *follow-up care
  • Nutritional snacks and juice drinks (individual size)

*Food stamps do not cover some items so we try to provide other resources and/or expensive items so the families can save money on groceries in follow-up care
**We do not take diapers, clothes and shoes as we never know what sizes we will need and have very limited storage.  We buy those items for the families with the gift cards when we know what we need.

I would like to let everyone know that we do have open spaces and if you know a family in need of services that is appropriate for our program, please have them call us.  This time of year is generally slow for us with referrals because families are getting their tax returns and would rather stay in a hotel until they find something.

I would also like to announce that we have added 2 host congregations to our family.  Venice United Church of Christ which was a support congregation, will now be utilizing the facilities at Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Venice to become a host congregation and will be supported by St. Mark's Episcopal.  Thank you everyone for making that happen!  We are also joined by Unity Church of Venice who has an amazing facility and grounds that they will be sharing with our families.  We have already got both the new hosts on the calendar for weeks later this year and are so happy to have them join us!  Below is a new list of host and support congregations.  If you know any congregations who would like to become involved or even just know more about what we do, please have them call me!  I love to talk about what we do!
