Springing into Spring.

Volunteer Spotlight

Name: Linda Zimmerman
Occupation: Program Manager in Higher Education
Time with JFS: 3 months
Volunteer Position: Ready for Success Mentor

Linda has spent the most recent part of her career working with minority and economically disadvantaged students in the area of career development in biomedical research.  Her interest in coaching and mentoring inspired her to get involved with JFS this past December. She chose Ready for Success which works with individuals who are either unemployed or underemployed and looking to improve their economic situation. Her interest in providing support and resources to New Americans seeking satisfying employment made this a perfect fit. When asked what she likes about volunteering with Ready for Success, she said, "Helping my client build her confidence and make steady progress toward employment.  Also, I like to travel and learn about different cultures so it is very interesting learning about my client's country of origin, values and beliefs." In her spare time she likes to go hiking or spend time outdoors, she also likes to read and travel.

Thanks Linda for giving your expertise to the Ready for Success program! Your commitment to helping and learning more helps not only the client you are working with but JFS as a whole!

5 Health Benefits of Giving to Others

Volunteering can help your mind, body, and soul. An online article found here lists 5 health benefits of giving to others:

You'll protect yourself against depression

You'll get a bit of a drug-free high

You can expect to live better, healthier, and longer

You'll rock that bikini like never before

You'll feel good all over - and be healthier for it

Now those are all benefits we can get behind!  Check out the article to read more about how giving your time can help you!

Upcoming Opportunities

Patient Navigator Training: Do you know someone who wants to become a trained Patient Navigator and help facilitate communication between seniors and their doctors? Send them our way because we have a training coming up on March 10th & 17th.  Great opportunity to give back with a flexible time commitment.  To learn more about Patient Navigators click here.

Friendly Visitors: We are looking for volunteers to visit an isolated elder once a week providing them with companionship and socialization. This could be visiting just to chat, going to see a movie, going out to eat, or any other activity!  Check out the Friendly Visitor website to learn more and apply.

Seize the Dream: JFS' annual gala will take place on May 4th, 2014. We are currently collecting auction items to be used in an online and silent auction.  Please help us out by reaching out to your favorite restaurant for a gift certificate donation or consider donating sports tickets or vacation homes. Every little bit helps out! For questions or suggestions contact Sarah Roth, [email protected], 508-875-3100 x320.
Volunteers don't get paid, not because they're worthless, but because they're priceless.  ~Sherry Anderson

Thanks for all that you do for JFS! Please help us spread the word about all the great opportunities we have.  Happy March and Happy St. Patrick's Day!
