National Developmental Disability Month
In 1987 President Ronald Reagan proclaimed March, " Developmental Disability Month". The deinstitutionalization movement of the seventies and early eighties had laid the foundation for significant social change, and the presidential proclamation called upon Americans to provide the "encouragement and opportunities" necessary for people with developmental disabilities to reach their potential.

New Medicaid Waiver Rules Set To Take Effect in 2014
In a long-awaited move, federal officials are clarifying what counts as home and community-based services for people with disabilities.
Under a final rule expected to be published in the Federal Register soon, housing for those with disabilities will not only be judged by its location or physical characteristics but will also have to meet specific "outcome-oriented" criteria in order to qualify under Medicaid home and community-based services waivers.

Communicating with and about people with disabilities.
The Americans with Disabilities Act, other laws and the efforts of many disability organizations have made strides in improving accessibility in buildings, increasing access to education, opening employment opportunities and developing realistic portrayals of persons with disabilities in television programming and motion pictures. Where progress is still needed is in communication and interaction with people with disabilities. Individuals are sometimes concerned that they will say the wrong thing, so they say nothing at all-thus further segregating people with disabilities. Listed here are some suggestions on how to relate to and communicate with and about people with disabilities.

Funding IDEA
A federal agency and more than 130 members of Congress are calling on President Barack Obama to allocate more funding for special education in his upcoming budget proposal.
In separate letters to Obama, the National Council on Disability and a group including both Democrats and Republicans in Congress are asking the federal government to increase special education spending for the coming year and to establish a 10-year plan to fully fund the program.
"We owe it to all students to provide a quality education that will help them graduate and enter successful careers," reads a letter from more than 130 members of Congress that's expected to be released Tuesday. "The federal government needs a plan to move us toward full funding for IDEA.
