Full House at SEDF Berkeley Conference

The Student Educational Development Fund (SEDF) ended a nationwide series of five informative, cutting edge conferences on February 25, 2011 with Dr. George McCloskey presenting at the Martin Luther King Student Union at UC Berkeley.  It was a perfect spring day in California, and we had a very lively, interactive group.

Self-Imagery in Reframing Class

Reframing Class is the first class of the morning for most CIP students. Reframing is a term that therapists use to describe the process in which a person converts the thoughts and feelings around a negative situation into a positive pathway for change. Reframing Identifies the strengths and values of a behavior and readjusting the thinking process so that the person is better able to recognize the positive and successful outcomes of the behavior.

 "When I first met Galen," says College Support Program Director Mary Lawler, "he was not the young man he is today. He has grown and matured in so many ways, it is hard to believe he is the same person."

CIP Launches Center for Asperger's and Learning Differences In Long Beach
  
CIP Long BeachThe College Internship Program (CIP) has announced it will open a new Center in Long Beach, California in August 2011.

Similar to other CIP centers nationwide, the Long Beach site will offer comprehensive supports for young adults ages 18-26 with Asperger's Syndrome, ADHD and other learning differences while they attend nearby colleges and CIP's career program.

Brevard in Brief

Students at the Brevard Center helped celebrate the birthday of Kat, Brevard Community College's facility dog, at a party and open house sponsored by BCC's Office for Students with Disabilities. This was a chance for our students to meet BCC students and a great opportunity for them to practice their social skills. Everyone enjoyed the event and celebrated Kat's birthday with a piece of cake.

Berkshire Students Serve Meals to the Community

The first Berkshire Center Community Supper of the year was a great success!  We had Swedish meatballs (we made 275 meatballs!) with gravy over egg noodles with peas and a yummy carrot raisin salad.  For dessert, we made homemade truffle brownies with chocolate ganache topping, garnished with strawberries.

Alumnus Tim Walker Reflects On His CIP Experience

The Brevard Center Community Service Update

Our students gain so much by participating in local community service opportunities. Each event is an opportunity for them to interact with members of the community who they might not normally meet. In addition, by helping with a variety of tasks, they are able to continue honing their social and career skills. And our students always leave feeling good about their contribution to the community.

Internship Spotlight: The Brevard Zoo

When Dave Friedland arrives at his internship site, he says "good morning" to Em, Joe and Brandi-Ann, the volunteers and staff at the Paws on Petting Zone at the Brevard Zoo. However, Ferdinand, Clarabelle and Chaplin prefer a scratch on the head or a pat on the rear. As part of the petting zoo crew, Dave's "coworkers" include pygmy goats, alpacas, armadillos and a monitor lizard named Ollie.

CIP's Collaboration with Community Access to the Arts

The career department is off to a successful semester at the Berkshire Center. I recently met with the program director at Community Access to the Arts (CATA) who has an extreme interest in collaborating with CIP. CATA is an organization that creates and nurtures creativity of people with differences through shared experiences in the visual and performing arts.

CSP's Academic Coordinator Gets High Grades

It is a daunting task indeed to be the first academic coordinator for the first semester of a brand new program, but Kristie Kaminski certainly rose to the challenge during the fall 2010 college semester at CSP Buffalo. Grades are in and they are impressive. The students, of course, are the central players in this inspiring success story, but they couldn't have done it without Kristie.

Elms College and John Elder Robison Hold Aspergian Mind Course at CIP
 
On Saturday, March 5th, 2011, Elms College held "The Aspergian Mind", a masters level course taught by John Elder Robison and Kathryn James at the College Internship Program in Lee, MA. The course is part of a series of off-campus offerings from Elms College in Chicopee, MA, which boasts the northeast's only masters degree course in Autism Spectrum Disorders.
