Join us for a reception on A ugust 5

You do not want to miss this movie! Ten years since the seminal An Inconvenient Truth, it could not be more timely. It opens on Thursday, August 3. We urge you to bring someone along who's not yet engaged in climate action. This could be their motivating moment. Purchase movie tickets here

Our CCL chapter has planned a special gathering on Saturday, August 5 after the 4:30 showing in Mill Valley -- commencing at 6:30.  We'll walk from the Sequoia Cinema to D'Angelo Ristorante for a 2 hour cocktail reception (delicious appetizers and wine). Space is limited to the first 50 who register. The cost is $40/person, payable here.
Massive CCL Conference in DC!
CCL's first congressional lobbying event 10 years ago drew 25 people at a time when few members of Congress were hearing about climate change from their constituents. This year, one of  CCL's challenges was finding a staircase large enough to photograph all the volunteers who came to meet personally with every member of congress.

Last year's group of committed activists numbered 800, this year's, 1,300. CCL membership keeps doubling yearly and expanding worldwide.

This wide angle shot was taken at 8 AM on June 13, a humid day when the temperature soared to 95F and an unattended bag prompted an impressive security scramble nearby. Those trudging between the senate and house offices wound up dripping wet, but luckily the Congressional air conditioning system provided welcome relief. Yes, the stone halls of Congress are quite comfortable on a hot day. Congress would do well to equally value Earth's A/C system before it breaks down completely. Enacting a carbon tax is an essential element of that fix.

You've already received conference news from HQ, but you can dive even deeper. Videos of many excellent presentations are found here.  Particularly compelling are the keynote addresses by Anthony Leiserowitz of the Yale Project on Climate Change Communication (good news about public opinion) and Lou Helmuth of Our Children's Trust (hope for youth plaintiffs in the courts.) Check them out and be inspired.
Lucky to have him:
Rep. Jared Huffman meets with CCL constituents in D.C.
He's with us all the way.
L to R: Bruce Hagen (Petaluma), Randal MacDonald (Mendocino), David Kunhardt (Marin), Rep. Huffman, Kai Guthrie (age 15),  Peter Joseph (Marin), Robert Archer (Marin)
 Membership Meetings Continue
July 18 and August 15, 7 - 9 pm, Mill Valley
"CCL exists to create the political will for climate solutions by enabling individual breakthroughs in the exercise of personal and political power."
-- Mission Statement

If you're ready for that breakthrough and have one hour/month to volunteer for CCL, we invite you to attend a hands-on workshop in Mill Valley.

We'll tailor small group discussion to you in order to help you find your personal political power.

At these workshops we will:
  • Get to know other CCL members
  • Demonstrate the new Community and CCL University sites, both rich learning resources
  • Answer your questions, discuss upcoming opportunities and your personal next steps

If you're new we look forward to meeting you. If you've already attended a meeting, we look forward to deepening your understanding and involvement.

Seating is limited to 10 people.  Please pose questions in your reply to help us plan to address your needs. When we receive your response, we'll send directions and carpool/shuttle info. RSVP to Barbara Wilson.

"I’m a climate scientist. And I’m not letting trickle-down ignorance win."
Dr. Ben Santer, IPCC climatologist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, member of the National Academy of Sciences, writes passionately about why he will not submit to intimidation, a lesson  learned young when trapped alone deep in an Alpine crevasse. It was life or death then -- and still is.
  Ted Halstead spoke at the national conference as convincingly as in this TED talk:
A Climate Plan Where All Sides Can Win
Want some great talking points? Memorize this speech. Ted Halstead, chair and CEO of the Climate Leadership Council  (CLC:  Shultz, Baker, Paulson, Walton, Bloomberg, Hawking, et al, with CCL as a strategic partner) , explains in this lucid 13 minute TED talk  why a revenue neutral, fully refunded carbon fee, dividend and border carbon duty can be conservatives' escape ladder from denial to action and one which progressives can support.

Their 4 points:

1. A gradually rising and revenue-neutral carbon tax;
2. Carbon dividend payments to all Americans, funded by 100% of the revenue;
3. The rollback of carbon regulations that are no longer necessary; and
4. Border carbon adjustments to level the playing field and promote American competitiveness.

CCL's proposal includes numbers 1,2,and 4.

Carbon Tax Center's analysis: The Shultz/Baker plan would allow the U.S. to meet its Paris commitment, without Trump.

Look who's partnering with the CLC, endorsing their carbon tax proposal! ExxonMobil, BP, Unilever, P&G, PepsiCo, General Motors, Johnson & Johnson and other corporate giants have joined these traditionally conservative statesmen and economists. This signifies vital common ground between conservatives and progressives, exactly what is needed to consolidate political pressure on Congress.  Now is the time!

Breaking News: California Supreme Court Upholds Cap-and-Trade System
Heavy politics surround CA's climate policy. Here's the SF Chronicle coverage, and a more extensive analysis of SB 775, the proposed fix to cap and trade that makes it look more like our carbon fee and dividend. Rumors of its demise appear to be exaggerated. Those interested in working on this can learn  more at CalFACT.org

This week: "T he world media is asleep , drugged by Trump, lost in meaningless entertainment babble. Here is the real story: humans have already driven Earth’s climate into a new state. The atmosphere has filled with greenhouse gases, acting like a blanket with heating that can no longer be stopped. The melting poles are just the beginning." Subscribe to the weekly podcasts. Warning: unflinching, uncomfortable realism that can be both a downer and stimulant for action.
