Marin Interfaith Climate Action

The Marin Interfaith Council now has an initiative dealing directly with climate change, the Marin Interfaith Climate Action (MICA).  Currently with a membership from 13 faith communities in Marin, and affiliated with local, state, and national environmental and climate groups, MICA is looking to extend its base of membership and increase its connections to our Marin faith communities.  Driven by a moral imperative to take action now, MICA is confronting the growing climate crisis in three ways:
  • Developing environmental education and adopting mitigating measures within our own religious communities
  • Being advocates for climate legislation
  • Collaborating in meaningful actions with other environmental organizations
MICA meets monthly.  The next meeting is Tuesday, September 19 at First Presbyterian San Rafael (upstairs) from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m.

For more information about joining MICA, please contact Pat Carlone,
pcarlone@hotmail.com , 415-233-1656.

MIC Board Changes

This month we welcome new Board Member Marian Schinske, who is a member of Congregation Rodef Sholom. She is the Founder & Executive Director of NovatoSpirit, a nonprofit offering athletic scholarships for low-income youth, enabling them to participate in local sports programs.

Stephanie Humphrey from Unity in Marin has stepped down from the Board in order to focus on her return to school as a full-time student. We are grateful for Stephanie's service to the MIC Board and wish her all the best.

Marin Crop Walk/Hunger Walk seeks new planning committee chairperson

The Marin CROP Hunger Walk Planning Committee needs a new chairperson!   Marin County has been the site of a walk to raise funds for the international aid organization, Church World Service, and for local hunger-related service organizations, for over twenty years.  Marin Interfaith Council is the local co-sponsor of the walk.  The 2017 Walk had over 125 people walking three miles through downtown San Rafael, raised almost $20,000, and had participation of 17 congregations and service groups.  If you are interested in taking on the chairperson role, please contact Leslie Purdy at rlpurdy869@gmail.com.  The Marin CROP Hunger Walk is just one of 1000 CROP Hunger Walks held around the country and several held in the Bay area each year. See job description HERE.

Resilient Neighborhoods - introductory meeting

A current project under way, in partnership with the Resilient Neighborhoods program, is to encourage the development of Resilient Neighborhoods teams within our congregations and communities to take climate action. On a team, we will calculate our carbon footprints, understanding our own contributions to the accumulation of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming.  Then we will take actions to reduce our climate impact, thereby personally making a difference.  So far over 340 Marin households have already participated in the Resilient Neighborhoods workshop reducing 3.9 million lbs. of carbon emissions.

Take the next step in climate action! Join a Resilient Neighborhoods workshop to reduce your carbon footprint and build community resilience in Mill Valley on 9/21, or in San Rafael on 9/26.
