 Commodity Report

Apples/Pears
Quality: Good
Supply: Moderate
 
Apples: Red Delicious (peaking 64-88ct) remain steady on all sizes. Golden delicious (peaking 70-88ct), Galas (peaking 72-100ct) and Fujis (peaking 72-88ct) are steady. Granny Smiths (peaking 72-88ct) are fairly steady, but lack availability on smaller sizing (100ct and greater). Honeycrisp (peaking 80-100ct) market remains somewhat active due to light supplies of lower grades. Red Romes, Jonagolds, Cameos and Braeburns have limited availability. Quality overall remains good among all varieties, with some minor scarring being reported.

Pears:  Bartletts (peaking 70-90ct), Bosc (peaking 80/100ct), Red pears (peaking 40-50ct) and D'anjou (peaking 80/100ct) all remain steady out of Washington. Smaller sizes of Chilean Bartletts, D'anjous remain limited. Quality remains good overall. 
 
Asparagus
Quality: Good
Supply: Moderate
 
Market steady for now, but supplies and quality are expected to decline shortly as temperatures in Mexico climb. Peruvian supplies remain very light.

Avocados

Market remains extremely active, with adequate relief unlikely to be seen until July.

Broccoli
Quality: Fair
Supply: Short
 
Market remains active with fair quality. Supplies extremely tight as production transitions to Salinas. Defects include undersized bunches/crown sizing and purple cast.
 
Cauliflower
Quality: Fair
Supply: Short
 
Market remains active as demand continues to exceed supply. Yellow, cream discoloration, brown/black spotting remain prevalent.
 
Cantaloupes
Quality: Good
Supply: Moderate
  
Market is steady with overall good quality and supply, however, 15ct and 18ct are tightening rapidly.

Carrots
Quality: Good
Supply: Moderate
 
Market is steady with good supply and quality.
 
Celery
Quality: Good
Supply: Short
 
Market is active due to tightening supplies as Yuma winds down and Oxnard finds itself behind schedule. Quality remains good with occasional discoloration, twisting and seeder being reported.

Cucumbers
Quality: Fair
Supply: Moderate

Market is active as imports slow. Quality concerns include soft ends, scarring and below average shelf life.

Eggplant
Quality: Good
Supply: Moderate

Market remains fairly steady. Fancies are limited. Quality remains good overall, though temperatures in growing regions may affect supplies.
 
Grapes
Quality: Good
Supply: Moderate

Green: Market is steady as imports continue to bring in product to sustain both coasts. Overall quality has been good. Peak season will begin at the end of the month.

Red: Market remains steady with adequate supply. Red seedless are transitioning to Crimson variety. Quality remains good.   
 
Honeydews
Quality: Good
Supply: Moderate
 
Market is steady. Supplies are split between Mexico and Honduras (peaking 6ct). Quality is good.

Iceberg
Quality: Fair
Supply: Short

Market is active. Desert supplies tightening as temperatures rise. Quality remains a concern. Salinas and Huron should be up and running within the next 3-5 weeks.

Leaf Lettuce
Quality: Fair
Supply: Short

Market remains active with below average quality. Common defects include blister and peel, twisting, discoloration, mildew and fringe burn. Huron and Salinas production expected to begin shortly.

Lemons
Quality: Good
Supply: Moderate

Market is steady with good quality and improved supplies.

Market remains active. Increased demand is quickly diminishing old crop, while new crop continues to produce limited volumes. Quality remains good overall.
