Asparagus: Expect unusually high markets for the month of May. Temps are increasing and production remains light out of Baja and Peru. Quality will be fair to good with inconsistent sizing. WA is not able to handle the demand.



Lemons: Demand exceeds supplies on 140s and smaller, all grades.


Oranges: Demand exceeds supply on 88s/113s/138s both grades.


Iceberg: Demand continues to exceed supply. Quality remains fair with insect pressure, pinking, mechanical damage, bruising, and fringe burn noted. Markets are active.

Leaf Green & Red: While the market is showing signs of easing, it remains active. Quality is fair but improving; defects noted are under-sizing, mildew, and mud.
 
 Commodity Report

Apples/Pears
Quality: Good
Supply: Moderate
 
Apples: Red Delicious (peaking 72-88ct) are steady on most sizes, with larger sizes being most prevalent. Granny-Smiths (peaking 72-88ct) and Golden Delicious (peaking 72-88ct) are extremely limited on smaller sizes . Honeycrisps (peaking 80-100ct) continue to strengthen due to greater demand and lighter supply. Galas and Fuji markets remain steady on larger sizes, but like most others are seeing limited volumes of 113ct and smaller. 

Pears:  D'anjous (peaking 80-100ct) are steady on all sizes with good quality. Red pears are steady (peaking 50-size half cartons) with good quality.
 
Asparagus
Quality: Good
Supply: Short
 
Expect unusually high markets for the month of May; product will remain tight, and subbing to alternative sizing may be needed. Temperatures continue to climb while production remains light out of Baja and Peru. Quality will be fair to good with inconsistent sizing. WA is currently unable to handle the demand.

Avocados
Quality: Good
Supply: Moderate
    
Fruit is available from Mexico and CA, with Peru imports expected shortly. We are in the higher elevation fruit with few growers controlling the entire crop. Fruit quality of fresh crop crossing less than 2 weeks old is solid; be aware of older fruit. The market continues to adjust.

Broccoli
Quality: Fair
Supply: Short
 
Markets are easing. Quality, crown sizing, and availability have all improved with only minor yellowing and dehydration.
 
Cauliflower
Quality: Fair
Supply: Short
 
Markets are easing; quality is good with minor bruising.
 
Cantaloupes
Quality: Good
Supply: Moderate
  
Cantaloupes (peaking 9-12ct) will be increasing in volume over the next week or so. Quality continues to be excellent with only a few problems such as softness showing up. The weather has been ideal for growing in all regions.

Carrots
Quality: Good
Supply: Moderate
 
Supplies remain good on Jumbo sizes.
 
Celery
Quality: Fair
Supply: Short
 
Market is strengthening. Quality is fair with discoloration, cracking, and twisting being reported. 

Cucumbers
Quality: Fair
Supply: Moderate

Market remains somewhat active due to lighter volumes being seen out of Mexico.

Eggplant
Quality: Good
Supply: Moderate

Choice is readily available, but Fancy's remain limited.
 
Grapes
Quality: Good
Supply: Moderate

Green: Imported green grapes arriving on the West Coast are being repacked domestically, improving overall quality to good. Chilean green seedless are done.

Red: Seedless quality remains good with few defects. South America is slated to finish at the end of this month.

Honeydews
Quality: Good
Supply: Moderate
 
Market is fairly steady with overall supply having improved (peaking 8ct). Quality remains good.

Iceberg
Quality: Fair
Supply: Short

Market remains active. Growers are having to pull from fields normally considered too immature to cover demand as weather affected growing areas; light weights are a concern. Quality is fair to good with pinking, mechanical damage, growth crack, and insect pressure.

Leaf Lettuce
Quality: Fair
Supply: Short

Markets seem to be easing, but remain active. Quality is fair but improving, defects noted are due to insects, discoloration, and fringe burn.

Lemons
Quality: Good
Supply: Short

Quality is good, but demand is exceeding supply for smaller-sized fruit. Larger sizing is more plentiful. The District 2 harvest is increasing to meet demand.
  
Limes
Quality: Good
Supply: Moderate
 
Quality remains good as District 2 increases harvesting in order to meet significant demand. Smaller sized fruit remain fairly limited.

Onions
Quality: Good
Supply: Moderate
 
The onion market has leveled off due to good volume being seen out of CA. Quality remains good.

Oranges
Quality: Good
Supply: Moderate
 
Market is fairly steady, despite limited supplies of smaller fruit. Quality is good.

Peppers (Colored)
Quality: Fair
Supply: Short
 
Market is fairly steady. Quality and availability have improved.

Peppers (Green)
Quality: Good

Pineapples
Quality: Good
Supply: Short
  
Market is leveling out as supplies improve. Quality remains good. 
 
Potatoes
Quality: Good
Supply: Moderate

Burbanks are the primary variety, but running small. Quality issues remain in some lots but are showing improvement. The market has been strong on large sizes and looks to continue to edge up gradually.  The WA season is done. ID red/gold quality are good with steady markets.

Squash
Quality: Good
Supply: Moderate
 
Market is steady with adequate supplies. Mexico is shipping good quality from all growing areas.

Strawberries
Quality: Fair
Supply: Short

Market remains unsettled. Quality is fair to good, sizing is varied this week, with occasional white shoulders, insect damage, and bruising

Tomatoes
Quality: Good
Supply: Moderate
 
Round: Markets are easing with very good quality being reported.

Roma: Market is fairly steady as supplies saw a slight improvement. Quality is fair to good.

Cherry & Grape - The cherry market remains relatively steady with good quality.
