November 2017: Re-Humanizing
I recently attended the Southeast Unity Regional Conference in Melbourne, Florida. It was an honor to present there to an uncommonly motivated and dedicated group that, like me, are serving those who serve. I got to see old friends and meet new ones and the best part --- TO LEARN --- to see through a new frame, framework, with a broader perspective and in a few cases --- a radically different view.

Ever heard of Maslow's hierarchy of need?
It dawned on me that in general --- I do mean in general, not including Puerto Rico and others currently under the most recent natural effects, our primary needs are met. I was struck considering that even though our bottom two needs are generally met, we as human beings are still not behaving all that sanely most of the time.

Paul Chappell ( https://paulkchappell.com) gave such an inspiring presentation that I began to BELIEVE again that peace is possible, and in fact, necessary. He's a West Point graduate, retired Iraq war veteran, Army Captain, raised in Alabama by his half white and half black father and Asian mother. Think about this. He lectures on waging peace, ending war, the art of living, what it means to be human. We have A LOT in common.

He began to notate his theory on basic human needs and a powerful presentation of what progress we've actually made and what is realistically possible. IF IF IF

I offer this list as an invitation to me and perhaps to you to begin again to restore your own sense of peace by meeting or exceeding your own basic human needs. I'm acutely aware that I have personally diminished many of these basic human needs in myself and those I have served, based on believing a certain approach or technique. I offer a wholehearted, sincere, regretful apology for any times I failed to see or honor them in you. I've been quick and determined to get to and live from transcendence without realizing that it required a step-by-step foundational framework that integrates and includes all the human needs being honored and met. It also includes noticing the unmet effects and symptoms that are guiding me to restore, remember, and keep it simple.
Basic Human Needs Unmet Needs/Effects
Purpose and Meaning Meaningless/Nihilism
Nurturing Relationships (Trust) Mistrust
Explanations Disillusionment/Ruthless World View
Expression Rage
Inspiration Numbness/Cynicism
Belonging Alienation
Self-Worth Shame/Self-loathing
Challenge Helplessness
Transcendence Addictive Behavior
Dehumanizing others and ourselves continues to lead us to act inhumanely. Re-humanizing is necessary to survive and to have any peace in our own hearts, and therefore live out peace into the world.
Step one --- not listening creates trauma. Listening does not. Feeling disrespected is the cause of most fights. Restoring and demonstrating respect, whether I agree or not, is always an option.
Richest blessings to you all as you enter the potential "real" war zone of the family during the upcoming holidays. Perhaps some "listening" and "respect" at the Thanksgiving table would be delicious indeed.
My year-long immersion programs start again in January through October 2018. If you're interested in waging peace inside and out, through intention, action, and practice --- come join us. Marthacreek@gmail.com with questions.
Much love,

"Realistic hope is grounded hope, based on facts and notable progress."
~ Martha Creek

"Violence causes trauma - Kindness doesn't cause trauma."
~ Paul Chappell
"On either side of a potentially violent conflict, an opportunity exists to exercise compassion and diminish fear based on recognition of each other's humanity. Without such recognition, fear fueled by uninformed assumptions, cultural prejudice, desperation to meet basic human needs, or the panicked uncertainty of the moment explodes into violence."
~ Aberjhani, Splendid Literarium: A Treasury of Stories, Aphorisms, Poems, and Essays

"The first peace, which is the most important, is that which comes within the souls of people when they realize their relationship, their oneness with the universe and all its powers, and when they realize that at the center of the universe dwells the Great Spirit, and that this center is really everywhere, it is within each of us."
~ Black Elk (1863-1950)
"Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God."
~ Matthew, V:9
