New York, N.Y. (September 30, 2015) - The John Mackey Award has named Matt Weiser of Buffalo as the John Mackey Tight End of the Week. The Mid-American Conference senior had the best game by a tight end in school history against Nevada last Saturday. Weiser went off for a career-high 10 catches for 131 yards, including a 41-yard touchdown against the Wolf Pack. It was the most receptions and receiving yards by a tight end in school history. Chad Upshaw held the previous mark of eight receptions for 116 yards against Ohio in 2005. This also marks the second consecutive week that a Mid-American Conference player has been named John Mackey Tight End of the Week. Honorable mentions for this week's John Mackey Tight End of the Week include C.J. Conrad of Kentucky and Billy Freeman of SJSU.
The 2015 John Mackey recipient will be
announced on December 9, 2015 and then presented live on December 10, 2015 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU. Other key dates include the announcement of the 2015 Mackey Midseason Watch List on October 12, 2015, the 2015 Mackey Semi-finalists on November 16, 2015 and the 2015 Mackey Finalists on November 24, 2015.
The John Mackey Tight End of the Week is an honor distinct and different from the annual John Mackey Award. This weekly honor was started in 2004 to draw attention to individual play by Tight Ends during the active season. The Tight End of the Week acknowledgment does not have a direct bearing on the final John Mackey Award selection process. The John Mackey Tight End of the Week honor will run until the announcement of the eight Semi-Finalists.
