Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

WE ARE CLOSED ON MONDAY, MAY 30TH

I t sure has been one exciting month here at Music Time. Our Spring Concert was a HUGE success, clocking in at a record-breaking 160+ performances in just about 3 hours. An enormous congrats from us to all of the hard-working students, parents and instructors that made it all possible. Go, you!

It is no doubt that we had a concert of epic proportions over at the Bothwell, but we also hit a milestone for our little facility on Las Positas Court: not just one, but TWO events in our back space! We hosted the first ever concert "dress rehearsal" on the evening before the concert, as well as a Rock concert on May 20th, featuring 3 of our student rock bands. The kids were great - but we'd like to especially thank the ADULT rock band on their first live appearance. Go, you!

Here's a peek at the concert dress rehearsal:

Yeah, yeah, May was awesome. BUT WAIT! June is going to be even better. Read on for the scoop on what's to come...

Student of the Month
Congratulations to Tanay Doshi!

Tanay will receive (along with priceless glory and endles
s bragging rights) a $30 Gift Certificate to Music Time Academy, as well as a $20 gift card to the Cinema West Theater in Livermore, and a shiny medal - can't beat that!

Instrument: Piano
Teacher:  Elizabeth
Age: 7
Grade: 3rd
School: Dougherty Elementary
Student Since: October 2015
Hobbies (besides practicing): Art

Tanay is a worthy recipient of the Student of the Month award. His instructor, Elizabeth, nominated Tanay based on his commendable perseverance and, of course, stellar practice habits (which are synonymous with progress on an instrument, and life in general). Also selling us on awarding Tanay as Student of the Month was his story from the Spring Concert.

As told by Tanay's mother:

Tanay was really excited for his second Recital. He was practicing everyday and also collecting his raffle tickets. On the day of Recital he was not feeling well....he even threw up before entering the Recital hall. We told him that it's ok if we go back home and he doesn't need to play but he was insistent that he wanted to play his piece. Everyone was very accommodating and understanding of the situation and allowed him to play his piece earlier in the program. Tanay was really happy that he was able to perform and we are very proud of him that he performed despite his sickness.

It is so refreshing to see students like Tanay overcome obstacles and do the best they can with what they have in the moment, rather than giving up (which is all to0 easy to submit to). So they say, when the going gets tough, the tough get going.

Keep being tough, Tanay! Congratulations on your recent performance!

Teacher Feature - Neill Castro

Introducing the latest addition to the Music Time Academy staff, Neill Castro! Like most instructors that join our close-knit team, Neill has been a friend and colleague of ours for years. We are thrilled to welcome him on board, now accepting weekly students on Mondays, in addition to substitute teaching. As a well-rounded musician, skilled and educated in a variety of instruments, Neill teaches guitar, bass, drums, piano and ukulele.

Neill, much like many of the students enrolled in lessons here, was fortunate enough to begin guitar lessons at age 10. He clearly took well to the musical experience, allowing it to have a profound, positive effect on his life ever since. In pursuit of deeper musical knowledge and experience, Neill later enrolled in college-level music courses, and also began to play bass (in addition to continuing with guitar studies under local guitar gurus Joe Livoti and Mike Williams). As a student at both Cal State University East Bay and California Jazz Conservatory (formerly the Jazz School), two of California's most highly-regarded music programs, Neill received a top-notch, formal education on not only guitar performance, but also in general music theory, music history and music production.

A professional guitarist since 2009, Neill has performed in a wide variety of settings, including dozens of musicals at some of the largest Bay Area theaters, like Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek. Neill has played countless jazz and rock gigs over the years, currently on a weekly funk/soul residency with Oakadelic at Berkeley's Starry Plough. He has had the honor to share the stage with legendary artists such as the Escovedos, Thomas Pridgen (Mars Volta), Michael Wolff (Cannonball Adderly, Sonny Rollins), and Jay Lane (Primus, Phil Lesh & Friends).

This month's Recommended Concert...

If you receive this newsletter, then you have shown some kind of interest in making your life (or the life of a loved one) more musical. One of the best ways to inspire a greater love and appreciation for music is to attend a live performance from skilled, passionate musicians. Here is our recommended local musical event for this month:

WHAT:
Stanton Moore Trio with Special Guests - A Tribute to Allen Toussaint

WHERE:
SF Jazz Center, Miner Auditorium

WHEN:
Sunday, June 19th at 7:30pm

Paying tribute to the legacy of the late New Orleans musical icon Allen Toussaint, Galactic drummer Stanton Moore has assembled a stellar band of Crescent City masters including trumpeter Nicholas Payton and percussionist Cyril Neville to perform fresh, funky arrangements of Toussaint's unforgettable songs. The explosive, driving force behind Galactic's stadium-sized blend of New Orleans funk, jazz, hip-hop, and electronic dance music, Moore is the primary figure bringing the second line drumming tradition to modern pop music, collaborating with Charlie Hunter, John Scofield, and Robert Walter as well as his own Stanton Moore Trio. GRAMMY-winning trumpeter, keyboardist, bandleader, and composer Payton is an audacious musician with a string of brilliant releases as a leader and innumerable recording and performing credits, appearing on Toussaint's final album, 2009's Nonesuch session The Bright Mississippi. Singer, percussionist, and member of the first family of New Orleans music, Cyril Neville embodies the city's cultural fabric as a member of the Neville Brothers band and the Meters. The impact of Allen Toussaint's career as a composer, producer, performer will live forever, and this tribute will help keep his flame burning at a roaring intensity.
