About Dr Ruth Searle
I am a marine biologist and writer. I have my own humpback whale research foundation (www.hwrf-uk.org) and have a PhD in humpback whale ecology and behaviour. I am also a published writer of several self help books, including one on happiness (The Thinking Person''s Guide to Happiness). I have written many courses for distance learning colleges and give public talks and lectures. I have a former career as a nurse and midwife.

Why I want to start a Happiness Club.
I have enjoyed helping people through my books on happiness and other self help topics but miss the interaction with people. I have a former career as a nurse and love helping and supporting people. I am a firm believer in the law of attraction and the fact that we create our own happiness - I live by this every day. Now I'd love to reach out to others and help them to realise their heartfelt dreams and live the best life they can. It started with wanting to help my sister out of a deep depression due to ill health.

I loved my work as a registered nurse and midwife. I've worked in hospices and neonatal intensive care mainly through my career. However, in 1994, when I was just 34, I was retired from nursing following a back injury at work. I was devestated and to top it all my husband had an affair and our marriage ended in divorce. I had to start again on my own with no job, no money and an injury. I ended up going bankrupt and got involved with a man that was violent to me - he broke my leg and I ended up having surgery. That relationship finished and I spent 10 years on my own. They were the best years of my life. I read lots of self help books and began to take control of my life. I started studying with the Open University and my confidence grew enough to apply to Swansea University to study marine biology. I started a business and did some agency nursing to fund my studies and now I have a PhD, many published books and courses, another business and I couldn't be happier. All this was possible because I decided to be happy and take control of my thoughts and my life. A real success story! I'm so glad of those challenges now as they've made me change direction and become the person I am. Now I want to help others turn their lives around and be happy!

Empower Yourself!
By Lionel Ketchian

The way to empower yourself is to decide to be happy no matter what. Choose happiness over everything else. This gives you the power to deal with life and yourself in the best way possible.

Happiness is a powerful strategy for those who practice it. When you're happy it gives you the awareness to realize the choices you have and what option is right for you. What is the real power that you have in doing this? You have power over yourself, and this is very important my friend, because being happy is authentic power.

We know that money can't buy happiness, because happiness is a decision. Happiness is a decision  only you can make.

The happiness decision is just a one step method, not three steps, or twelve steps. Who can remember so many? But everybody can remember just one step. All you have to do is remember to choose happiness in every moment in your life over anything that can take your happiness away!

Now that you have made the happiness decision you realize that happiness is where you're headed. Choose happiness instead of allowing anything to upset you. Once you have made the happiness decision, it becomes easier and easier to be happy from one moment to the next.

Have you noticed how hard it is for you to control anyone or anything? Well, you can control yourself by lightening up, relaxing, and laughing about things, having fun, and enjoying life. Being happy allows you to learn that you can control yourself, and not let anyone or anything else control you.

Learn to let go of the things you can't change. This way you do not let them change you. Live with happiness and allow the experience of being happy to work for you.

When you think something makes you unhappy, you feel like a victim because you think someone or something has taken your happiness away from you. You have let yourself become a victim. Feeling and thinking like a victim does not work. When you are unhappy you become a victim because you are thinking about your problems and not about your choices.

You're unhappy because you have a problem. Now, you have cut yourself off from the choices you have available. The problem becomes bigger than life, as it consumes and overwhelms you. You feel there is nothing you can do about it because your state of unhappiness directs you to see life in only that one negative way. Once you think unhappily, and think in terms of the problem and not the solution, you disempower yourself from dealing with the problem effectively.

Why choose happiness? Because that's what you really want. In a happy state you can deal with any problem because you can see with clarity what choices you have. This clarity enables you to deal with your problem. You can only make the best choices available to you.

First, you need to know what your choices are. Happiness allows you to see your choices very clearly. Unhappiness does not allow you to see your choices. Unhappiness hides your choices from you so you are cut off from your power and unaware of your strength.

Do you know the reason why people don't live with happiness? Many people are not even aware that happiness is a choice they can make. Once you learn that being happy is a choice, you may think that you don't deserve it. Some people do not love themselves enough to treat themselves with happiness. BE HAPPY, take my word for it, YOU'RE WORTH IT!

Why be happy? Because it's the best way to live, and it's the best way to give. Happiness is a power source. You can't give away what you don't have. When you're happy, you start use that power source. Now you can share your happiness with others. Show them your happiness and let them model this behavior from you.

People will become aware of happiness through you. Others will see the wisdom of choosing to be happy for themselves. It is all about controlling yourself, not others. People can't contaminate you with their unhappiness. To the contrary you will infect them with your happiness.

Learn to change what you can, and accept what you can't change. Being Happy allows you to tap into your own wisdom and common sense. Choosing happiness will make a big difference in your life ... and you will be making a positive difference in the world. Empower yourself with happiness now and keep choosing it over everything else.

Don't Let Others Control Your Happiness!

"A truly happy person does not allow his happiness to be dependent on any external factor over which he may not have control."

Base your happiness on your own attitudes, and you can be its master.

If you tell yourself that you can only be happy if others do or say what you wish, your happiness is under the control of those people.

You can never have a guarantee how others will behave.

Even when they do behave as you wish, you are likely to feel uneasy about how they might behave in the future.

I will be on the segment as well as Dr. John Tamerin, psychiatrist and friend of mine.

I understand the program will introduce the recent work that the Mayo Clinic  is doing on happiness. The Mayo Clinic has published a book on happiness. it expresses the research that happy people seem to exhibit the following five traits:

1. Devoting time to family and friends
2. Appreciating what they have
3. Maintaining an optimistic outlook
4. Feeling a sense of purpose
5. Living in the moment

Make sure to tune in and learn some happiness advantages for yourself. Tell your friends about it as well. Sharing is caring and is important to maintaining your well being.

It's wonderful that a large news station is featuring happiness and the benefits we can all receive from it. Congratulations to CBS NEWS for their excellent broadcasting dedication.

For many, Dr. Bernard Siegel or Bernie, as he prefers to be called, needs no introduction.

He has touched many lives all over the Planet. In 1978, he reached a national and then international audience when he began talking about patient empowerment and the choice to live fully and die in peace. As a physician who has cared for and counseled innumerable people whose mortality has been threatened by illness, Bernie embraces a philosophy of living and dying that stands at the forefront of the medical ethics and spiritual issues our Society grapples with today.

In May 2011, Bernie was honored by the Watkins Review of London, England, as one of the Top 20 Spiritually Influential Living People on the Planet. He continues to break new ground in the field of healing, supporting changes in medical education to "humanize" medical practice.

Bernie was born in Brooklyn, NY, and attended Colgate University and Cornell University Medical College. He graduated with honors and holds membership in two scholastic honor societies, Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha. He trained to become a surgeon at Yale New Haven Hospital, West Haven Veteran's Hospital and the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

In 1989, Bernie retired from Yale as an Assistant Clinical Professor of General and Pediatric Surgery to speak to patients, their families and caregivers.

In his latest book, his 12th, published in September 2011, entitled A BOOK OF MIRACLES-Inspiring True Stories of Healing, Gratitude, and Love, Bernie is described in the Foreword written by Deepak Chopra who tells us "Bernie Siegel began his writing career twenty-five years ago, and from the outset he didn't shy away from miracles.

HAPPINESS AND GOODNESS CLUB, WHITE PLAINS, NY
Get ready to get happier simply by talking about happiness! We'll be in the cafe. Look for our red Meetup sign. Please feel free to arrive late or leave early. It's great if you can RSVP in advance, but in case you can't, come anyway. As a reminder, this group has two goals. The first is to explore the relationship between happiness and goodness. The second, much more fun, goal is for us to become much happier just by getting together and talking about happiness. The theory behind this second goal comes from a classic psychology study showing that by simply talking regularly about happiness we can become much happier.
While we'll depart from them whenever and however much we may wish, like by talking about gratitude, acts of kindness, meditation and other happiness techniques, the following list of 14 topics will serve as a backdrop for our discussions.
Here's some background on the research our group is based on. In 1980 three New Zealand researchers found that after eight 2-hour conversation sessions about happiness over four weeks, their subjects reported a 22 percent increase in their happiness. Continuing their twice-weekly sessions, by the sixteenth week they reported being 42 percent happier. This group has too many meetings each month to list. Please go on the Meetup link below to learn more.

SMILES WITHIN A VILLAGE, HAPPINESS CLUB, SHELTON, CT
Senior citizens have love for a number of things-among them for sure, their families and their country. A great many seniors also have a love for poetry-reading it, reciting it, even writing it. These seniors learned poetry from the quality educational systems of their youth and have derived comfort and joy from it ever since. It's also interesting to note that although poetry is often associated with youth-young love and all that-the great poets have definitely been concerned with older folks, the process of aging, and coming to terms with the last phases of life. Whether it's Shakespeare, Robert Browning, Robert Frost, or Emily Dickinson, some of their most memorable works have addressed these matters.
Bringing older folks into contact with what about 20 of the great poets have had to say about aging is something that interests me-a senior citizen myself with a half-century's experience as a college teacher and professional writer/editor/researcher-very, very much. That is why I have developed a Presentation entitled "What the Great Poets Had to Say About Aging and the Last of Life." I believe that all seniors-and not just seniors--would enjoy this lively Presentation.
PETER J. O'CONNELL holds degrees in literature and history from Johns Hopkins University and in American Studies from Yale Graduate School, where he was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow. He is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, and the National Association of Scholars. He also has been active in community theater and in independent and academic film. He resides in New Haven, Connecticut.

Please join Audrey in welcoming Cathy Flavin a cohort from Wholebeing Institute speaking on Happier at Work: Cultivating Flow. Flow is a state in which we're fully engaged - so absorbed and focused we lose track of time and place. Catherine Flavin, Managing Partner of Thrive Leadership, will draw on her deep experience with engagement, and on the amazing work of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, to lay out the conditions necessary for the experience of flow. She will help participants to identify ways to increase the likelihood of personally entering a flow state (at work or on personal time), and advise on what leaders and companies can do to nurture a culture conducive to flow. Doing so increases peak experience and peak performance, benefiting people's well-being and the organization. Catherine's life work has been in supporting leaders who want to engage their followers. Trained as a political scientist and survey researcher, and with more than 2 decades of experience as a researcher and consultant, Catherine helps people to find inspiring insights and identify how they can think, act, and speak to engage themselves and their followers at higher levels. Working across industries, she collects insights on what works from successful, fulfilled and inclusive leaders  - and presents her findings in a way that "lives" the research she loves (e.g., basing improvement in strengths and skills; stretching and growing; showing up in an emotionally honest way; maintaining an empathetic, positive approach; and keeping a strong future focus that is accompanied by plans and actions to move forward).
