Message from Paul Abramson of SolarKal:
On the evening of Thursday, May 31st, I will be representing SolarKal in the North Jersey 5K Corporate Fun Run -- 3.1 miles to benefit " Tackle Kids Cancer". I ran in the race last year and it was great -- part of the race is on the actual horse track which was pretty cool.
Tackle Kids Cancer raises funds for pediatric cancer research. Only 4% of federal cancer research funding goes to pediatric cancer. Funds raised through the race stay at the Children's Cancer Institute at Hackensack Meridian Health. To date, Tackle Kids Cancer has raised over $5.5 million from more than 14,000 supporters.
One of the most notable partners of Tackle Kids Cancer is the New York Giants, with Eli Manning as the spokesman -- you may have seen ads on TV for "TKC".
I am requesting that family, friends and business associates support me in this year's race for with a donation of $31 (based on 3.1 miles) or multiples of $31 ($62, $93, $124, etc.). 100% of your donation will go to Tackle Kids Cancer and their life-saving research and patient care.
Would you like to help wipe out pediatric cancer? If you'd like to donate, please visit my fundraising page linked below or mail me a check made out to "Hackensack UMC Foundation". My mailing address is 211 Miln Street, Cranford, NJ, 07016.

If you'd also like to run/walk, contact me at 917-226-2595 and I will give you registration information. The cost is $40 and includes a t-shirt.

Thank you for your help -- your donation is, of course, fully tax deductible and you will be contributing to a great cause!

New cranes arrive at APM Terminals Elizabeth
The four gantry cranes are designed for operations on today's
largest container vessels.
APM Terminals Elizabeth took delivery today of four of the newest generation gantry cranes to better serve liner customers deploying larger ships. The cranes reach 23 containers across the vessel beam - equivalent to two thirds the width of a football field - and are part of the facility's USD $200 million infrastructure investment plan scheduled for completion this year.

"We are proud to offer our liner customers and landside customers this new service capability, increased productivity and deeper water depth, said APM Terminals North America CEO Wim Lagaay, who noted "The completion of the dredging six months ahead of schedule was made possible by the dedication and proactivity of the Port Authority of NY & NJ working with Federal and State agencies, as well as other stakeholders to secure all the permits and contracts in record time. This will result in more berthing capacity for our liner customers at a time when cargo volumes continue to increase."

"The multibillion dollar program to deepen our port channels to 50 feet, coupled with the raising of the Bayonne Bridge, has ensured that our port is ready to handle the biggest ships now calling on the East Coast," said Port Authority Port Director Molly Campbell. "The arrival of these new cranes is further evidence that our terminal operators are confident on the port's bright future and willing to invest in it."

The ongoing modernization plan for APM Terminals Elizabeth includes reinforcing berths which have been dredged to 50 feet (15.25 meters) to handle the larger vessels.

Another key benefit for landside customers will be the new, modernized gate facility for truckers to enter and exit safely and efficiently. The new, inbound gate complex offers 24 lanes fully-equipped with optical character recognition (OCR), radio frequency identification (RFID) and global positioning (GPS) systems to help truckers find containers easier, closed circuit TV (CCTV) for security, and weigh-in-motion (WIM) scales to help truckers do more business every day through shorter turn times at the terminal. The enhanced system and capacity is designed to make American supply chains more competitive for end users and easier to use for truckers.
In 2017, the Port of NY & NJ handled a combined 6.7 million TEUs, with APM Terminals Elizabeth accounting for 1.43 million TEUs, or 21% of the port's container volume.

Solar Energy is Made for Manufacturers
By Yaniv Kalish
Certain industries are better suited than others for solar energy. The manufacturing industry is at the top of those sectors that check off many of the boxes solar advisors require before recommending a switch to solar panels. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) says that "The cost of producing products is something every manufacturer considers in the effort to stay globally competitive. A few ways you can control those costs is by improving energy and operational efficiencies and optimizing manufacturing processes. Investing in improvements in these areas is a proven way to reduce costs, improve product quality, and increase output."

How do you know if your company is a good candidate for solar power? Here are three good reasons that manufacturing companies should consider solar panels.

1) Go Big or Go Home Manufacturing companies require industrial grade machinery, which means big buildings to house that equipment, which means extra-large roof space. This is ideal for solar. Also, often those machines are running 24/7, leading to high energy bills. Companies that install solar panels can eliminate some, if not all, of their monthly energy bill, saving anywhere from hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars. You can also count on energy prices fluctuating, whereas solar energy locks in a predictable cost stream. After paying off the solar panel system, which can be financed without having to dig into the capital expenditures budget reserved for equipment purchases, you'll enjoy free energy for the life of the system, which can be up to 40 years.

2) New Way to Bring in the Green As the manufacturing industry gets more competitive, and with the new import tariffs by the government, it's time to look in a different direction for a boost to the bottom line. On top of the energy savings outlined above, Federal and State solar tax incentives cover the majority of the solar system cost, and provide double digit returns. Plus, most manufacturing businesses own their buildings. This puts them in a unique position to almost instantly increase the company's value and create a competitive cost advantage. Furthermore, by reducing the carbon footprint and going green, the company is more attractive to investors, future buyers and potential customers. The company also has some great news to share with investors, the board and/or the media.

3) Business as Usual Didn't budget for the switch to solar? No problem! The Federal and State incentive programs offset over half of the system cost, and a variety of financing options exist such that any given manufacturing company would not have to invest directly. There are two Federal tax incentives now available: (i) Receive a tax credit worth 30% of the system (i.e., if a system costs $1 million, you will receive a Federal tax credit for $300,000). (ii) Depreciate 100% of the system value in the first year. State incentives vary depending on the state where the business is located, but NY, NJ, MA, MI, and CA are some examples of states with exceptional incentives in place. In addition, solar companies offer financing solutions - such as a solar loan or a solar lease - that allow solar savings and incentives to fund the project. Once the system is installed, there is little to no maintenance. A commercial solar energy system often comes with a 25-year warranty and maintenance contracts, so that there's no stress about a broken panel.

Solar energy is a bright idea for your business and for the environment. When you're ready to take the next step, call a solar consultant like SolarKal. They'll help you navigate through the often complicated transition to sustainable energy plus they're agnostic when it comes to installation options and partners.

SolarKal, a solar advisor, was recognized as one of the Top 100 Energy Startups. They were also announced as a winner in New York State's 76 West Clean Energy Competition. They help companies navigate the transition to solar, from the first site visit to the final installation.
