Craft Beer Blast

May, 2013

From Larry...

The South Florida beer scene continues to grow and get more interesting. Several breweries are planned and  Funky Buddha Brewing has announced it's grand opening on June 1st in Oakland Park. An offshoot of the original Funky Buddha Lounge this will be a full scale brewery. See sidebar for more about this and other openings. This month's Florida Brewery Corner chronicles an expansion of a different type. Tampa Bay Brewing has been in Ybor City (near Tampa) for many years. They have partnered with a group that has opened a Taphouse in Coral Springs featuring TBB's beers. The beers will soon be brewed on site.

The "Style of the Month" for May is American Wheat Ale, similar to German Hefe Weizen in appearance but with none of the banana or clove flavors. These beers use a greater percentage of wheat malt and can be served with a slice of lemon. Wheat ales are a refreshing  on a hot summer day.

The Brewery of the Month for May is Nantahala Brewing in Bryson City, NC. Celebrating three years of brewing in May, the brewery is a great stop after a day of outdoor activity in Western NC. They have experienced growth and many changes since the company started. They have recently launched a new website that has their story and lots of other relevant information.

The festivals and beer events continue: the 4th annual Brew at the Zoo is this weekend.  Also, American Craft Beer Week is May 13 - 19th 2013. Some of the ACBW events are listed below. Due South Brewing will celebrate their one year anniversary on Sunday May 12th. There will be many special beers form different Florida breweries. More information is on the website.

Cheers,

Larry

American Wheat Ale Glass Style of the Month

American Wheat Ale

American wheat ales are brewed with 30 to 75% wheat malts. The hoppiness is low to moderate. A low level of fruity esters exists but no clove or banana flavors that German Hefe- Weizens have. Many are unfiltered; the yeast adding a complex note to the flavor profile. Color is golden to light amber. Some people add a slice of lemon to the beer; others consider that an insult to the beer. Some good examples are: Boulder Beer's "Sweaty Betty" or North Coast's "Blue Star" Wheat. Locally the Titanic has a honey wheat ale on now. Enjoy a wheat ale after working outside on a hot summer day.

Nantahala_Beer_Glasses  Brewery of the Month Nantahala Brewing

Nanatahala Brewing has been brewing for 3 years this month. In that 3 years the growth and change have been immense. Partners and brewers have come and gone, all the while building up the business and reputation. Bryson City is a great home; the tap room is a big Quonset hut just across from the Smokey Mountain Railway stop. The area has ;a great variety of outdoor activities available. Smokey Mountain national park is 2 miles away, rafting opportunities are all around and hiking trails abound. The beer is good too. They are brewing many different beers and barrel aging as well. Beer City USA (Asheville) is nearby and they are part of that culture. Sierra Nevada is building a brewery and the Nantahala guys have already brewed a collaboration beer with them. All the breweries in the area know and help each other. That is probably the best attribute of the craft beer culture; it is alive and well in western NC.I visited last October on Trail Magic Release day, and my review can be seen on my 2012 review page.

This Month
The 2X Ultra IPA, Blackstar BIPA and American Honey Wheat are on now. There are also several different guest beers now on tap. Stop by to see what's up!

Whole Foods Coral Gables says "Cheers to American Craft Beer Week" on Thursday May 16 at 7:00. There will be a beer tasting of some of their favorites. along with several appetizer pairings. In the Lifestyle center. Call 305-421- 9421 to reserve a spot. Free!
