Greetings!

As a new brewer, my first full Arizona summer is a transition in education, equipment and experience. Now the challenge is not just about ingredients and process but temperature control. Now is the time when I finally commit to a chest freezer and corny kegs. Now is when I move my carboys from my cool and unused guest bathroom to their own dedicated corner of my house.

ASH during the summer makes a transition too. If the first half of this year was about blowing doors with our ASHional Guard volunteers, summer, and the end of festival season, is our time to get back to our own brewing projects.

And projects there are! We've got a Barrel Project, and SMaSH Project, weekly BJCP classes, and maybe a road trip or two. There's a lot brewing with ASH, and I can't wait to taste it.

Prost!

Wow!

Sometimes the heat slows you down, but not for ASHers.

We've got some great things brewing, read on. It just keeps getting better. The last item is a real blockbuster. All of these things are possible because of members just like you.

You all are doing your part by volunteering. The numbers from the Ameri-Can Canned Craft Beerfest look good, but we have a little work to do as Kat reports below. We've offered an incentive for volunteers to be announced after the fest, so make sure you read up on it. It will be a VOLUNTEER ONLY opportunity. She gives a pretty good hint at what the prize is.

At May's meeting, I'll reveal the check total from Landon at HDE for our ASHional Guard work thus far.

Member Matt Tretheway got us the cheba. He's our connection to a dope deal. No. Not the cousin (or Cousins) but Cheba Hut. read about our awesome new discount in Mesa and Tempe. Saving some coin on a 5-0 and a dank IPA is Gangnam. (OK I don't know what the kids are saying these days.) Read about the discount below.

I am also proud to announce that ASH will proudly screen, Beer Hunter-The Movie. It's a documentary on famed beer and whiskey writer, Michael Jackson. This is the Arizona debut. Thanks to the sharp eyes of Kristal Bittner, we managed to scoop the entire Arizona Beer Community on this one.

ASH owns the license on screenings, so there will be a general public viewing at some point, but I'm inviting you to a private event.

An RSVP is required to attend and seating is limited.

You must be an ASH member in good standing, an invited sponsor of ASH or a Crescent Crown employee.

Beer Hunter-The Movie

Wednesday, May 29 7PM

Crescent Crown Distribution

1640 W. Broadway Rd Mesa, AZ

Cost is $1

Again, this is a CLOSED to the public event.

As such, we can bring homebrew or commercial beer.

RSVP is required. Please fill out the form here

As long as ASHers like you continue to work hard for all of us I will keep working harder for you and so will our Board.

See you with some cans in your hands this weekend.

Salud!

Matt Brown

There are a lot of exciting things going on, so I will get right to it...

Homebrewer of the Year

The brewer of the winning English Brown HBOY entry will get to spend a day brewing Twin Arrows Brown Ale with the folks up at Mother Road Brewing in Flagstaff. I mentioned before that the prize would be great, so hopefully we will have a lot of entries; it is hard to beat a day at a professional brewery making great beer with great people. Entries for that competition are due at next week's general meeting.

Here are the remaining HBOY deadlines, including next week's:

5/21 - English Brown

6/18 - Fruit Beer

7/16 -Pilsner

8/20 - European Amber Lager

10/15 - Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer

11/19 - IPA

12/13 - Light Lager

The schedule is available online and will be updated through 2014 over the next few weeks. We finally added styles for October and December too, but not because the AHA finally updated its website. The AHA actually decided to discontinue the program.

Salt River Fields Oktoberfest / ASH Oktoberfest

Everything in October is still going ahead as planned. Here are the dates:

10/4 - ASH Oktoberfest Entry Deadline

10/5 - ASH Oktoberfest Judging

10/6 - ASH Oktoberfest Judging (if necessary)

10/11 - Salt River's Oktoberfest Entry Deadline

10/12 - Salt River's Oktoberfest Judging

10/19 - ASH Oktoberfest

We need as many judges as possible, so please keep 10/5, 10/6, and 10/12 free!

BJCP Class

The BJCP class is underway and meeting Monday nights at 7pm. If you want to attend, it is not too late. They are only five weeks in, so there are still 18 categories left to cover. You can join the group here, and then you will need to RSVP for each class in the discussion forum.

This is a great opportunity to learn more about beer whether you intend to take the test or not. It can also be a great opportunity for existing judges to earn CEP points. It is open to all paid ASH members and a class fee of $5 covers the cost of the commercial examples you will get to try.

Springfest Competition

We are going to have a big Springfest competition in early 2014, and we will be sorting out the details and registering it with the BJCP over the next month or two. That means the Competition Committee still needs plenty of help. Join here if you want to be involved.

Your ASHional Guard

The ASHional Guard hard at work at the AmeriCAN Fest Judging this month. Our volunteers helped steward and judge the competition of some of the best canned craft beers in the country. Look for the Guard at the festival as they pour for these breweries on Saturday.

Spring has quickly run away and the hot temperatures have arrived in Phoenix. Before it gets too hot, though, we have one more festival to look forward to. The 2013 AmeriCAN Canned Craft Beer Festival is this weekend on Saturday, May 18 and ASH is playing an important part in the festival.

A truly great beer festival is built on volunteers who know about beer and enjoy passing that knowledge and passion on to the festival attendees. This year, ASH is providing the beer pourers for AmeriCAN and we've almost got all of the volunteers we need!

There are 10 more volunteer spots open for the 2:30 - 6pm shift.

Volunteers for the AmeriCAN festival get general admission to the festival while they're not volunteering, which includes the sampling cup (or can in this instance) and drink tickets.

Not only will you get to enjoy the festival when you're not volunteering, ASH has got several opportunities coming up that are going to be offered only to the ASH members who have volunteered this year. Saturday is your last opportunity to volunteer before the summer hits and these great opportunities disappear! (Hint: One of them includes getting to brew on a professional brewing system!)

If you're interested in volunteering, please fill out the form here and email it to [email protected]

SMaSH for ASH
What happens when a single malt meets a single hop? It could be a summer love affair. Or just a chance to learn more about these two essential beer ingredients.

During the next six weeks, the SMaSH for ASH Project invites any member interested to pick a hop to use in a recipes that will let the hops shine for bitterness, flavor and aroma. At the end of the six weeks, we'll share the beers at our General Meeting. The goal is to have at least 40 beers to try.

There are recipes on the discussion thread, or you can use your own. You're welcome to load up on late additions. Extract brewers - don't think that you're left out of this project. There are options for you as well.

All details about recipes, extract alternatives, and a list of hops claimed and available are on this SMaSH for ASH Discussion Page.

Now hop to it!

Dopple the Fun: ASH / OHSO Barrel Project

The next iteration of the ASH / OHSO Barrel Project is official.   According to John Rudolph: "We are going to brew a doppelbock for the next beer in the OHSO barrel.  Please reply to this thread is you are interested in brewing for that style (the brewers for the first mix get first right of refusal).  I will compile a list and need to know by May 15 who is interested.  I will publish the recipe once we have the list of brewers."

Yes, today is May 16, so we'll pull some strings and ask John for a Hot Break extension. Still, don't delay in responding if you'd like to be involved. Our first barrel brew - the RIS - scored 34 at the San Diego NHC comp and took a Gold Medal in the barrel aged / wood aged category at the BA Comp in April.

Toast to the Toasted Sub

As you all know, ASH membership has its benefits - including great discounts at many of our local retailers, pubs and restaurants. Our latest comes from Cheba Hut.

Cheba Hut Toasted Subs, locally owned and operated since 1998 is now serving craft beer at its two East Valley locations. The Tempe location has a rotating draft selection from local brewers like San Tan and Four peaks as well others from Odell, Abita and Nectar. The Mesa location near MCC offers canned and bottled selections from Odell, Oskar Blues, Sierra Nevada as well as locals San Tan and Four Peaks.

Cheba Hut has over 30 different sandwich choices including 6 different vegetarian options. ASH Members can now enjoy 20% off of their beer and food by presenting their ASH cards at the register when you order. The discount even applies during Happy Hour.
April Recap

President Rob Fullmer started the meeting by raising a glass to our lost member Dave Conz. Next Jaime Baack started the meeting with a calibration beer then we moved to the Main Event.

Ron Kloth of Papago Brewing and Charley Billingsley from Four Peaks went head to head in a Battle of the Hops sharing opinions and knowledge about styles of hops.

Kat Morrill praised the success of volunteer efforts so far this year and talked about upcoming volunteer events. ASH has three more official volunteer events this year, but other groups ask as well. Kat will post those opportunities as they arise.
May General Meeting

Tuesday, May 21, 7pm - 9pm
ASH Clubhouse (Rose Market Storefront
2515 N. Scottsdale Rd.
Scottsdale, AZ

It's cask night at our May meeting. ASHer Kevin Morriss will be our guest speaker talking about his reconditioned beer engine and the joys of brewing and hand pumping cask ales. Join him will be Uwe Boer of Sun Up Brewing to give us perspective from the commercial side of cask.

Bring your homebrew to share. If this is your first meeting, you're still welcome to bring your beer. We have a reach in cooler in the back where your homebrew goes. Make yourself at home, place your beer on the shelf and help yourself to other members' beers. If you do not have a tasting cup, we have extras next to the cooler.

HBOY entries are due at this meeting for English Brown beers. Submit entries to Matt Brown or Krystal Bittner.
The ASH Hot Break is distributed every month to our members and friends. If you stumbled upon this issue through Facebook or Twitter, take a minute to join our website, azhomebrewers.org, so you can get our newsletters and updates in your email. (There might even be some secret events and deals announced as well).

We're always looking for reader input. If you're excited about a new project, teaching others how to brew, hosting a homebrew event, or have anything else you'd like to mention on Hot Break, email [email protected]. We want to see stories and photos from our members.

We'll see you at the General Meeting. Till then brew on.

Prost!

Angela
