APRIL COALITION MEETING

At this month's meeting:
  • Coalition members brainstormed potential names for renaming and rebranding the Stratford Youth and Family Advisory Board to achieve the objectives of a Drug Free Communities Coalition, Youth Service Bureau Advisory Board, and Local Prevention Council.
  • Using the '5 Why's' technique for problem analysis from Week 1 of the National Coalition Academy (NCA), members divided into groups to uncover, challenge and test assumptions of teen marijuana use in Stratford.

  • Members were asked "Why is teen marijuana use happening in Stratford?" Once causes were identified, each group was asked, "Why is this happening?" The process continued until the group could no longer identify a more basic "why" or root cause.

  • The results--The factors that create a favorable attitude among teens to use marijuana include:
    • Limited discussion between parents and their teens about marijuana
    • Teens are unaware of the legal consequences associated with marijuana
    • Society acceptance of marijuana
    • Availability of marijuana at parties

  • The information provided will help structure the Action Plan.

#14: Adult Role Models
Parent(s) and other adults model positive, responsible behavior.

C.L.A.S.P and F.L.A.S.H after-school students give us:

  • Model for children and youth hard work, a good attitude and respect for others.

  • Make sure children and youth hear problem solving in peaceful ways. Avoid bad mouthing co-workers, sports teams or players, and others whom you compare yourself or compete.

  • Model healthy behaviors.

  • Keep the relationship between you and the child/youth honest and sincere. Give them good advice, and show them that you are brave enough to try again, even when you feel embarrassed.
