First Tuesdays

May 5, 5-7pm

Tomorrow, Tuesday, May 5th, Circle of Hope will have late dropoff hours. And you can expect this again in June... the first Tuesday of every month. Thank you Margot Carleton, the COH volunteer who has offered to staff this new important addition to COH's open hours!

St. James Concert

May 17, 3pm
St. James Episcopal Church in Somerville will host a concert featuring  fortepianist and harpsichordist Sylvia Berry, whose recent recording of Haydn sonatas was lauded as "A wonderful debut that augurs more wonders to a come" by Early Music America. She will be joined by other classical musicians living in Somerville, and they will present an afternoon of chamber music and songs by Mozart, Haydn, J.C. Bach, and others. In conjunction with this event, a clothing drive will be held benefiting two local non-profit organizations; Circle of Hope and Second Chances. We encourage everyone to clean out their closets for spring and be generous with clothing of all types for all seasons.
To learn more about Ms. Berry, please visit her website at www.sylviaberry.org.

You Must Hear This...

It's notes like this that motivate us to work harder.  You, our supporters, will especially be moved by these words...

" As a nurse on the family team I see the direct impact that Circle of Hope has on our homeless families. Countless numbers of families have benefited directly from the generosity of your donors. Every day I see children receive appropriate clothing for school, and New England weather conditions. Women who are pregnant and need larger sizes are delighted when they open a bag of clean, stylish tops. New baby donations make everyone smile! We all gather round to watch an expectant mom open, admire and refold beautiful clothes that her infant will soon wear. "

Go To Crew Update

In April, we made two requests of our Go To Crew.  We were in desperate need of Spring jackets for the entire family as well as clothing for infants.  Once again our Crew came to the rescue.  In fact, according to COH Volunteer Coordinator Eileen Mullen, "The infant clothes we received allowed us to serve two family shelters - ATASK (Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence) and Hosmer House."

The Go To Crew is a small group of supporters who receive an e-mail if a special need arises.  Being a member of the Go To Crew does not obligate its members to donate every time there is a need.  If you would like to be a member of the Go To Crew, or know someone who would like to be on this e-mail list, just respond to this e-mail, or click here.

Dear Friends of Circle of Hope,

This is the season of new beginnings.  This week, in particular, I am grateful for COH's impact on the beginning of new life and new hope for the mothers and families we serve.   At COH we help mothers without safe, stable housing and we act as family and friend to welcome their newborns.  Our actions, through your donations, tell these mothers that we all care.  In this issue you'll read about the tangible ways we bring gifts of hope to these women and their babies and how what you do matters so much to them.

COH is an extended family of compassionate caregivers.  We partner with homeless shelter and hospital staff serving the most fundamental needs of individuals and families when they need it most.  Your donations to COH enable us to bring dignified clothing and necessities for a healthy, fresh start.  Every pair of sneakers or shoes we bring offers a step forward for someone who is without a home.  Every day offers new hope and new beginnings when surrounded by this much love and kindness.

Thank you, all, for making this spring the season of hope and renewal for Boston's most fragile people.

With deepest thanks,

Barbara Waterhouse
Executive Director

This Mother's Day, Honor Someone Special

The weather this past winter certainly showed each of us just how vulnerable we are to powers beyond our control and forces greater than ourselves. So as the seasons change from darkness into light - from great uncertainty to renewed hope - we think of the members of our community who remain at risk, even as the days seem brighter. It's at Mother's Day when we focus on the mothers and children in our community who are without the necessities they need to stay healthy and safe.

This time each year, we ask that you help the mothers we serve by honoring the mothers in your own life. A donation to Circle of Hope at Mother's Day is a gift of nurturing, compassion and grace for the women and children Circle of Hope serves every day.

A gift of $25 would give a new mother a baby bath towel and baby wash. A gift of $75 would provide a new mother with a Welcome Baby bag full of hats, onesies and a baby blanket for her newborn. A gift of $150 would buy a homeless mother a new portable cribe so her baby has a safe place to sleep while living in a shelter.

With each gift, Circle of Hope will send a handwritten note to the woman you choose to honor, or will acknowledge the woman you wish to memorialize to the recipient of your choice..

A mother is the first to love, protect and care for her children, and with your donation, Circle of Hope can continue to help these incredible moms in their time of greatest need.

Thank you and Happy Mother's Day!

Because of YOU...
Because of people like YOU, Circle of Hope is able to help hundreds of people in Boston area homeless shelters and programs serving refugees and disadvantaged youth.  Here are some of our stories from this month...

Nobles Comes To Circle of Hope
Nobles and Greenough Service Day
L to R: Dineh Pandian, Brad Becker, McCrae Williams, Emma London, Alessandra Abelli, Ashley Ducharme, Sarah Toubman, Bailey Turner

Every year, Noble and Greenough School stops everything, and students, faculty, and even some parents take part in Service Day.  Groups of students are assigned different organizations to help in a meaningful  way, and they actually travel there to do what is needed.  Lucky for us, some of those students came to Circle of Hope on April 14th.  Months before they arrived, the students held a school-wide toiletry and baby products drive that produced hundreds and hundreds of packages of shampoos, soaps, toothpastes, toothbrushes, body wash, baby wipes, and so much more, all for Circle of Hope.  The toiletries and baby products were sorted in to bags that will be delivered to families in shelters.  In fact, the students delivered some of the toiletry bags to Project Hope Shelter in Dorchester.  Thank you to all who joined us last month and thank you to all Nobles students, faculty, and parents who participated in Service Day.

Just Dropping By to Say Thanks
L to R, Kate Maguire/COH Director of Development, Barbara Waterhouse/COH Presidentt/Executive Director, Barb St. John/NWC Co-President

COH President/Executive Director Barbara Waterhouse was honored  to speak at the Needham Women's Club meeting last month.  Her message:  THANK YOU.  The Needham Women's Club looks out for us in so many ways. They staff our Saturday drop-off hours.  Many members volunteer at other times during the week.  The NWC was a Patron Sponsor of Revival.  And last year, they made Circle of Hope the sole recipient of the Needham Garden Tour.  We cannot thank you enough, NWC!

Shout Outs
Toiletries and notes from Temple Beth Shalom

The religious school children from Temple Beth Shalom collected toiletries and made cards for bags for "Tikkun Olum Day."  We were so happy to bring them to the outpatient clinic at Boston Healthcare for the Homeless.

Just when we thought the clothing drive was over, we received an e-mail from Taylor's Stationery, saying more donations had been dropped off.  COH President/Executive Director Barbara Waterhouse replied, "Thank you so very much for your incredible generosity and for helping us provide much needed clothing to our neediest neighbors."
