Having a Garden is Easier Than You Think!

There is nothing quite like savoring a salad made with fresh vegetables that you grew by hand, in your own garden. What's that you say? You don't have a garden? Fortunately, you don't have to have a "green thumb" to grow your own produce, you just need to know a few tricks!

The good news is that plants don't really require much-if you have plenty of sunlight and water as well as decent soil you're good to go. If you're a gardening newbie, choose plants like tomatoes, carrots, basil and cucumbers as they are relatively easy to grow. A side benefit of having a garden is that it will encourage you to spend more time outdoors being active. V

What's In Season

You may have noticed a plethora of corn and mangoes on the shelves of your local supermarket. Both are in season this time of year so be sure to incorporate them into your weekly meal plan! They are packed wtih antioxidants to help fight cancer and fiber to fill you up. Mangoes also provide a hefty dose of potassium. Pair the two in a delicious, healthy salsa of tomato, avocado, black beans, corn, and mango--toss with olive oil and sea salt. Top salad greens with the salsa and whip up a cilantro lime dressing to go with it, or serve the salsa alongside shrimp or fish tacos!

May is Older Americans Month

According to the Administration on Aging , there will be over 72 million Americans ages 65+ by the year 2030--or roughly 20% of the population of the U.S.! Older Americans Month is a great time to take action to ensure government support services and public policy continue to work with the needs of an aging population in mind. The theme for Older Americans Month 2015 is "Get Into the Act," and there is no better time to do just that. Melanoma & Skin Cancer Prevention

sunny-beach-girl.jpg

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer. UV damage can also cause wrinkles and blotches or spots on your skin. The good news is that skin cancer can be prevented, and it can almost always be cured when it's found and treated early.

During the month of May, join us in taking action to prevent skin cancer and reduce the risk of UV damage.

Take simple steps today to protect your skin:

  • Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. Put on sunscreen every 2 hours and after you swim or sweat.
  • Cover up with long sleeves and a hat.
  • Check your skin regularly for changes and visit your doctor if you notice anything unusual.
