Middle School Students Win Big at State Science Fair Competition

Four of our middle school students scored amazing wins at the annual Illinois State Science Fair competition this past weekend. MashAllah, Amani Laliwala, Zerina Adzamija and Heena Sharief each took home gold medals for their projects, and Eiman Navaid placed with a bronze. MCCA alumnus Noor AlYousef won Best in Category, an incredible accomplishment, as she scored first place among hundreds in her specific field of science, mashAllah! Noor commented to her former teacher, MCCA's Abeer Saleh, that she couldn't have won this award without the foundation in science research she had received at MCC Academy during her years with us. May Allah swt continue to reward our students, past and present, with success and barakah in the lives inshAllah.

Summarizing the Generosity of our Middle School Students

Planting the Seeds of Greatness
by Sadiya Barkat

Subhanallah, sixth grade students at MCC Academy recently raised over $600 through a bake sale and then subsequent donations. Raising the money is not as impressive as the cause for which they raised it. Rather than spending that money on something frivolous, like a party, these beautiful children have chosen to help out humanity instead by either adopting an orphan or building a well in impoverished areas. I am so incredibly humbled and awed at the generosity and compassion that is nurtured within our students, the selflessness that has been imbibed into them, and the overall kindness that pervades them. And I must say that as a teacher of 11 years, I have a lot to learn. I may know my content area, but our 6th grade advisor Ms. Abdallah, my former student, has really drawn out the greatness in her students. I can't really express in words the pride and thankfulness I feel in the part I played in Ms. Abdallah's education. She is a product of this school, its Islamic studies classes, its programs, and its nurturing of character. She has taken all those lessons from her days and her teachers at MCC and implanted them into her life to create an existence of service, compassion, and cheerfulness to all those that have the pleasure of being in her presence. And now, incredibly, the same manner in which we nurtured her greatness, she is nurturing the greatness of her students. Indeed, in her work in bringing children to be more ummah-conscious and generous, she is planting the compassionate seeds of tomorrow's future. Sixth grade, we at the middle school are incredibly proud of your service, charity and compassion. Your example has spurred 7th and 8th graders to donate to your cause, too. We pray Allah SWT puts much barakah in your efforts and brings relief and prosperity to our troubled ummah around the world. And Ms. Abdallah, I am unabashedly proud to say, "Once I was your teacher in social studies, now you are my teacher in bringing out social consciousness." -- Mrs. Barkat

The Fine Art of Good Business
by Sadiya Barkat

Last month both 7th grade classes conducted bake sales in order to raise funds for the 8th grade farewell party. The bake sales were a smashing success but also provided many moments of reflection on the talents and compassion within our students. Firstly, I am wholly indebted to the following parents without whom this would not be possible: Mrs. Abdeljabar, Mrs. Choubka, and Mrs. Laliwala. May Allah SWT reward you immensely for your help, your time, and your vast efforts. I was incredibly impressed by the business acumen of Omar Abdeljabar, who really demonstrated a great knack for maximizing profits. The organization skills of Ameera Abdeljabar and Hanna Choubka were also enviable in that they were the liaisons with administration and the record-keepers for this operation. Additionally, I absolutely loved the initiative of Amani Laliwala and Sara Hashlamoun, in that they recommended a concurrent bake sale at the Morton Grove campus and took initiative in organizing it, obtaining the products, and then selling the goods. One of my most reflective moments came when some students stated that the 7th grade girls are not charging enough in the Morton Grove Sale. When I got the chance to check on the kids, I noticed that they were not charging higher prices like the Skokie group but their generosity was rewarded with high profits anyway. Indeed Allah SWT rewarded their kindness and compassion with increase and it was a beautiful thing.

Students compete in Middle School Math Contest at Niles West

Congratulations to all of the contestants and winners at the  Niles West Mathematics Department Annual Junior High/Middle School Math Contest on April 9, 2015. There were three separate competitions: a) the Calculator Competition where students had 20 minutes to complete a set of questions; b) the Quick Competition where students had only 30 seconds to read and answer 40 questions; and c) the Team Competition where students were grouped with students from other schools and had to answer a set of questions.   Alhamdulillah, many of our students won prizes, such as ribbons, Niles West T-Shirts, and best of all...JET'S PIZZA!  They persevered through the problems and tried their best!  I was proud of them for challenging themselves and taking the risk to compete with students from other schools. Middle School Science Teacher Mrs. Saleh Publishes Book about Quran and Science

Mrs. Saleh, our middle school science teacher, recently spent a weekend signing copies of her first published book "One Giant Step for Mankind, One Verse at a Time." Mabrook to Mrs. Saleh! Her book is a great and practical resource for educators to use in the classroom that encompasses verses from the Quran, contributions from Muslim Scientists, and exciting science activities. Knowledge is brought to life from historical figures like Ibn Sina and Maryam Al Astrolabe in the time of "the Golden Age" that offers our youth the tools to make connections with verses from the Quran and topics from various areas of science. Ideas for developing theatrical plays are also included. The book is a must for all educators that want to enhance students' understanding of Quranic verses relative to science and Muslim historical figures.

Updates from School Counselor Ayesha Kazi

Earlier last month, MCC Academy held its first school-wide Career Day, which was very successful on both campuses alhamdulillah. We were honored to welcome visitors from diverse professions who not only spoke to our students about their careers, but they showed our students what their work looks like through interactive presentations. A huge thank you to all of our participants:  Mansoor Kazi, Strategy Consultant;  Arefa Shakeel, Attorney;  Dr. Aisha Siddiqui, Anesthesiologist;  Naz Ayoob, Interior Designer;  Mansoor Panawala, Sales Strategy;  Asad Jafri, Arts and Cultural Producer; Khadija Ahmed, Lead Systems Analyst;  Sabaahath Latifi, Mental Health Therapist;  Osman Aslam, Entrepreneur;  David Grupp, Software Developer;  Dr. Rasha Ali, Opthamologist;  Rohina Malik, Playwright/Actress;  Dr. Uzma Hatia, Dentist;  Captain Bill Porter, Firefighter/Paramedic;  Sophia Syed, Police Officer;  Dr. Farhana Khan, Dentist;  Dr. Azmath Hussaini, Physician;  Farah Siddiqui, Finance/Operations.

On April 20th, 8th grade students went on a field trip to Niles West High School to shadow MCCA alumni that are current students at the high school. To ease the transition from middle school to high school, our 8th graders were given the opportunity to meet with NWHS administration and support staff, tour the high school with MCC alumni, and sit in on two high school classes.  Though many of our students are attending schools other than NWHS, this field trip allowed them to better understand and conceptualize what attending a large high school may be like.

On  June 4th, former MCCA students currently enrolled in high school or college are invited to speak to our middle school students about the high school transition, how to prepare for college, and the challenges of no longer being in Islamic school. For more information or if you are interested in participating, please contact Mrs. Kazi at  [email protected] Insha'Allah we can continue to work together to promote our students' social and emotional wellness today and in the future!

Mrs. Taufiqe - KG-C

KG-C is leaping into spring! In reading, we are becoming more and more fluent in our reading each day.  We have finished long vowel sounds, vowel digraphs, and are making our way through consonant combinations.  We are practicing comprehension skills such as questioning, sequencing, summarizing, author's purpose, inferring, and predicting.  During the month of April, we worked on a writing project called, "My Favorite KG-C Memory."  You'll be able to buy our publication at the end of the year, inshaAllah.  In math, we have just finished practicing to add three ways; with a number line, by counting on, and interpreting word problems.  We'll be moving on to measurement and money, inshaAllah.  In social studies, we have started studying maps.  We love learning about where we live!  Our science unit wrapped up with planting our own marigold seeds and watching them bloom.  We finished our month with a fun field trip to the Navy Pier Children's Museum where we worked in interactive exhibits like the "Dinosaur Dig," "Tinkertown," and "Waterways."

Mrs. Shariff - Kg-A

Kg-A has had a fun-filled month!  Since spring is here many of our activities have revolved around this season. As part of a science unit,
we learned all about the parts of plants and we completed a seed germination project.   Our room has been beautified by spring décor hanging from our ceiling as well as springtime scenery on our windows made up of all of our students' work.  In math, we have been focusing on subtraction through the concept of the counting onwards method.  In reading, we have covered compound words, twin consonant words, as well as read many springtime storybooks.  Social studies class has been quite exciting as students have learned about map legends and a compass rose. They will soon start a project in which they will make their own map using a key.  Our class took a trip to The Children's Museum at Navy Pier last month, which was a blast! Students had an opportunity  to splash, climb, build and learn while they explored the museum.  A special thanks to our parents who volunteered to chaperone.

Mrs. Baig - 2B

Second-graders have been busy learning about matter in science. They learned that matter is everywhere. They collaborated into different groups and categorized different types of matter on large paper. Then, they presented various kinds of examples of matter. They learned how to share ideas and work productively in a group.  In math, we learned about lines of symmetry. We observed many things around us that are symmetrical, including us! We cut many shapes and folded them, seeing that they overlap perfectly.  On Earth Day, we talked about various ways to protect our earth. Students did an art activity and wrote promises on how they will care for our earth. The also made small booklets and learned about recycling, reducing, and reusing.  A special thanks to Rayyan Ahmed's and Sumbul Mateen's moms for coming in for art this month.
Ms. Bozai - 2C

April was an exciting month for 2C! We had presentations from a dentist and an interior designer during Career Day. We read fables (Half-Chicken) and other texts in reading class. We learned about Native American tribes in social studies. We learned how to read and create picture graphs in math. We learned all about matter in science class. Our projects included making exploding volcanos for science and making papier-mâché earths for Earth Day. We also celebrated our Box-Top Competition win with an ice cream party. We collected more than 1,200 box tops! Looking forward to our final weeks preparing to leave second grade and enter third!

Ms. Lena - 5A

Fifth-graders have been enjoying exploring the 13 colonies. They have been working in collaborative groups to find important information independently and to discuss what they found. Go team work!

During writing, students completed their second career research papers. In class, they brainstormed ideas they were interested in. After deciding on a topic, they conducted research on their specific careers. They had the opportunity to interview a professional of their chosen career. Lastly, classmates presented their final reports to the class! I am very proud of all my students!

Mrs. Sheikh - 2A

My second-graders have been waiting patiently to go out and use the playground. Alhumdullilah, it is done now and they are enjoying their recess.

These few weeks have been busy for them finishing up the third quarter and practicing for IOWA tests.  In reading, students are almost done with another theme that incorporated many interesting stories, especially folk tales and fables.  To reinforce their learning in social studies, my class worked on a project on Native Americans, which is displayed in the library. They made teepees, wagons, jewelry, and bags that represent Native American culture.  In science, they did experiments on changes in matter. They learned about reversible and irreversible changes in matter.
Math has been fun! Students made picture graphs and made graphs with tally marks.  My class painted beautiful flowers, bees, and butterflies to welcome Spring, which are all on display on the bulletin board outside of the classroom.  I would like to thank Mrs. Aaliyah Rana and Mrs.Bumi for volunteering their time to do art with the children.

Mrs. Nabeel - 1C

Reading: We have been working hard on making good predictions, using context clues from the text such as the title, words and pictures/ photographs. After completing a picture walk, students get to share their predictions on a sticky note. Then, we discuss each student's reasoning and thinking process. We enjoyed reading "The Lorax" by Dr. Seuss to celebrate Earth Day. Students wrote about what they would do if they were the Lorax.

Math: April Showers bring May Flowers - Students created a 3-D project to show place-value (tens and ones) on each raindrop of their clouds. Show Me The Money - We have been learning all about  pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. We have been learning how we add and subtract money in real-world problems. Students have been working hard on using different combinations of coins to show the same value. We love buying different items from our Classroom Store.

Social Studies: The World of Work Project - Our class is learning all about different types of work in social studies. As part of our study, students interviewed someone who has a job.  We learned a lot about different professions (jobs) through the wonderful and informative presentations where students got to share their findings from their insightful interviews. Furthermore, we learned families have needs and wants and how people who earn money must make choices about spending and saving. My students enjoyed learning about George Washington Carver who taught farmers how to grow peanuts and found ways to make many other products from peanuts.

Language Arts: Compound Word Flowers - We have been learning about compound words in language arts. Students created a project to showcase how we can make different words by putting two words together. In the middle of the flower students chose a base word such as book and then on each petal they wrote a new word by adding another word such as textbook, notebook and etc. Spring is in the air- Students shared their excitement about spring by writing complete sentences using their 5 senses.

Writing: We have been celebrating Earth Day all month long. Students learned the importance for caring for the earth. We read "The Lorax" by Dr. Seuss and discussed ways that we can contribute to the Earth by making pledges to ensure that we keep our Earth clean. We also wrote acrostic poems about the Earth and Recycling to share with each other the importance of recycling, reducing and reusing. We enjoyed creating our Earth Day 3-D projects where students got to share their promises to make the Earth better for all.

Art: A special thanks to Mrs. Puthwala for coming in to do a fun art project with us. The students used recycled items to create fashionable pencil holders to celebrate Earth Day. We absolutely love them.

Miss Malik - 1A

In reading, we read about a little girl who was a reluctant artist in a book titled "The Dot." With the help of her art teacher, the little girl becomes an artist and encourages her classmates. Yusuf's mom came to help us explore our artistic talents and helped us make trees with blossoms using only dots.

To celebrate Earth Day we discussed the importance of taking care of our planet. We brainstormed ideas of things we can do daily to minimize waste and protect the environment. Our class promises to love the Earth.

We've been using art to channel good weather. We made kites welcoming spring and saying good-bye to winter.  We made umbrellas in hopes for less rain and more sunshine!
We are becoming more independent learners.

Mrs. Siddiqui - KG-B

Students enjoyed the visit from Mrs. Rasha Ali, a KG-A parent and an ophthalmologist, who visited KG-B on Career Day in April.  She discussed the parts of an eye, how vision is tested and the different diseases an eye can have and how those diseases are fixed. She also handed out different kinds of glasses to the students so they could try them on. At the end of her presentation, she gave all the students eyeball-shaped rings to wear on their fingers. Students came back from Spring break and shared what they did during their vacation by working on a writing prompt about this topic. Students have been working on many writing skills such as sounding words out, spacing words, using the given lines properly when they write, capitalization and punctuation at the end of their sentences. Students also drew a picture to go with their writing.

In math, students have been learning about various concepts and they had the opportunity to explore these math concepts by working in centers. The different concepts include: number recognition where they played a bingo game to recognize numbers; counting by2's where they played a game on the computer to practice this skill; extending patterns where they used connecting cubes to make different kinds of patterns.

They also played the game Sorry.   The weather has been beautiful lately and students have been going outside for recess every day! They enjoy the playground and on one of the warm days, teachers bought popsicles for the students to enjoy outside!

In science, students have been learning about plants. Students had the opportunity to plant radish seeds. They learned that they need soil first, then seeds, some more soil and then water for their plants. Students also learned that they need sunlight so we placed the plants by the window sill in our classroom. They have been watering their plants and they watch them grow every day!

We enjoyed a fun field trip to the Children's Museum! They became paleontologists and dug up fossils of dinosaurs, they explored water in different ways, and they pretended to be cashiers and customers at a store etc.

Mrs. Pathan - 4A

4th grade has been learning about natural disasters in science, such as earthquakes and volcanoes. In order for students to visualize a volcano, we conducted an experiment. The experiment included baking and vinegar to mimic a volcano eruption. Students had a great time doing this experiment. Also, for Earth Day, students created Earth Day shirts. Each shirt was creative and unique in it's own way!
Mrs. Suzan Wahdan - Arabic

After learning about Arabic pronouns, students applied the rules they learned to write a paragraph about a friend using the pronouns. They each wrote the paragraph in the middle of hand-shaped worksheets that demonstrated all the unattached pronouns on the fingers. Their work was displayed on the bulletin board in the middle of large-sized hand that demonstrated the pronouns as well.

Mrs. Lina Mayzouni - 3rd and 4th Grade Arabic

After building their model houses and making floor plans of their dream or real houses,
each student in 3A-Arabic focused on writing a paragraph describing his or her house.  The students were excited to see their creative work being displayed in the school library.

Fourth grade students engaged in a serious discussion in Arabic about the importance of friends and friendship, talking about  the characteristics of a true friend. After the discussion, students worked diligently
on writing a paragraph about themselves and their best friends.

Mrs. Malik - Preschool

Preschoolers were little chefs this month! They learned all about healthy eating and even made healthy snacks in class. We made pasta salad, fruit kabobs, veggie monsters and delicious jello! We had a blast!

We also had our wonderful parents coming in to read to our preschoolers on Friday afternoons. Children loved seeing their parents be a part of their school experience!

We also received our new class pets. Caterpillars! They are currently in their cocoons. Children have been observing them and they are anxiously waiting for them to turn into butterflies.

Mrs. Saleh - Middle School Science
Sixth-grade students were busily working as electrical engineers learning the difference between a series circuit and parallel circuit. They designed artwork and meticulously placed the proper wiring, switches, and light bulbs accordingly until it shone from their chosen position.

Seventh-graders completed the study of all the systems of the human body. The culminating activity was to dissect "Rattus," otherwise known as rats!   The students identified with the major organs and completed a practical exam the following day by naming all the organs extracted from the specimens.  This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to observe the organs that resemble our own on a smaller scale.

The 8th grade class creatively designed their own 'roller coaster' and identified with potential versus kinetic energy.  They used team work to help them solve the problem of using gravity as a means of support to allow a metal ball to roll down and hit a target.  Now, when they go to the Great America trip planned towards the end of the year, inshallah, they'll be riding the roller coasters and screaming "kinetiiiiiiiiiiic"!
