Leadership conference, May 7
A free half-day conference for young women regarding career opportunities in government and non-government organizations will be offered by the Township on Saturday, May 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Bloomfield Library Little Theater. Bloomfield College Dean Rose Mitchell will lead a special workshop, and three high-ranking women in government service will focus on career opportunities in a panel discussion.

Town adds Monday evening hours - As of May 2, five key Bloomfield municipal offices will stay open two hours later on Monday evenings. The tax collector, construction code, clerk's office, health and engineering will stay open until 6:30 p.m. on Mondays throughout the year.
Voters: Get registered for the primary - May 17 will be the last day for residents who want to vote in the June 7 primary to register to vote or transfer their voter registration. The clerk's office will be open until 9 p.m. on May 17.
Renew your
pet's license now - Dog and cat license renewals for the 2016-2017 licensing period will be mailed the week of May 2. All current licenses will expire on June 30. Any questions, call (973) 680-4015.
Free rabies shot for your pet - The Bloomfield Health Department will
hold a free rabies clinic on Saturday, May 14, from 9 a.m. to noon at firehouse #3, 124 East Passaic Avenue.

Drug Disposal Day
Don't toss old meds in the toilet or trash. Do it safely! Tomorrow (April 30) is national "Operation Take Back" day, an event for disposing of prescription drugs. (No needles, inhalers or illegal drugs.) Take unwanted and expired medicines to the Bloomfield Police Department at #1 Municipal Plaza. Drop in the specially labeled receptacle in the building lobby. No questions asked. Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Bloomfield Bike Fest
A day of fun on bikes is planned for this Sunday (May 1) from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Wright's Field. Activities include bike races for kids age 11 and older, a
silly bike race for adults on kids' bikes, an obstacle course and more. Participant registration is $10, or $15 on event day.

Berkeley 5k, May 1
The run/walk event takes place this Sunday at Berkeley School, 351 Bloomfield Avenue. Registration opens at 9 a.m. and the run/walk starts at 10:15. Race day entry is a $20 donation; $5 for kids under age 9. To register online

Come to 'Town Paints,' May 7
...
The biggest-ever Town Paints Arts Celebration will take place Saturday, May 7 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the Town Green in front of the Bloomfield Civic Center, 84 Broad Street (inside if it rains). A mix of professional and amateur artists of all ages, from throughout Essex County will enter their paintings, drawings, mixed media and sculptures, competing for awards to be given in the afternoon. Bring the kids to DPW's 'Big Truck & E-Recycling Day'
The Bloomfield Public Works Department will hold its third annual Big Truck & Electronics Recycling Day on Saturday, May 14, from 9 a.m. to noon at 1350 Broad Street, in the parking lot across from Brookdale Baptist Church (next to Brookdale ShopRite). The event will occur rain or shine. Kids can climb onto and inside trucks, plows and other DPW & Parks work vehicles. It's also a day to drop off unwanted computers, TVs, stereos, toasters, telephones and other electronics.

Congrats to local filmmaker!
Bloomfield resident Francesco Nuzzi has won a Best Feature Adaptation award for his film, "Star Crossed Lovers," a modern-day adaptation of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet." The film premiered at the Garden State Film Festival in Atlantic City on April 2 and will now be an official selection at the Hoboken International Film Festival. Nuzzi also has a starring role in the film, shot on location in several New Jersey towns.

BCA Block Party set for May 14
The first-ever Bloomfield Center Alliance Block Party will take place Saturday, May 14 from noon to 8 p.m. on Washington Street, between Glenwood Avenue and Farrand Street. (Rain date May 21.) Thirteen local eateries will offer modestly priced tastes of popular foods. Enjoy live music and a festival atmosphere, with no entry fee and free parking at the Farrand Street lot. Details

Two acclaimed authors coming to the library
Award-winning author Peter Danish and adoption expert/author Regina Radomski (pictured) will speak and sign books at the Bloomfield Public Library in May. Danish, author of fiction, nonfiction and plays, will appear May 7. Radomski, who presents a raw and honest look at adoption, will speak May 14.

Memorial Day Parade, May 30
Bloomfield's annual Memorial Day Parade will take place Monday, May 30 at 9:30 a.m., proceeding from the corner of Broad and Warren streets, northward on Broad, to the reviewing stand on the Town Green.
Parade participants will include veterans, marching bands, military/police/fire/EMS vehicles, community groups, sports teams, and classic cars.

The Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra, directed by Enrico Granafei, will perform a free concert at the library on Saturday, May 21 at 3 p.m. The community-based orchestra includes mandolins, mandolas, mandocellos, bass, guitars and flute. Members play classical, folk, Italian songs, show tunes and contemporary music.

The Bloomfield Chorale, directed by Ruth Hsu, will present "All's Fair in Love and War," a selection of classical and popular songs, on Saturday, June 4, at 3 p.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church, 216 Liberty Street. Civil War authority to speak May 24
Professor, author and global lecturer William Gillette will present "The Role of New Jersey in the Civil War," on Tuesday, May 24 at 7:30 p.m. at Bloomfield Civic Center (84 Broad Street). Gillette, a Rutgers history professor, has been awarded for three books on state history, and was a Fulbright lecturer in Austria, Japan and Russia. His local talk will touch on Civil War enlistment motivations, training, discipline, combat, home-front politics and New Jersey's pro-southern and pro-slavery stance. FOP hosts fishing derby, May 14
Bloomfield Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #214 is sponsoring a fishing derby on Saturday, May 14, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Clark's Pond (behind Bloomfield Middle School). More than $800 in prizes will be awarded, including longest fish, first caught, and any trout caught. The derby is open to all Bloomfield children up to age 16. All must be accompanied by an adult. Only Bloomfield children are eligible for prizes. Resident registration begins at 7 a.m. and continues throughout the event.
Bloomfield Recreation Department and Township Council are supporting the event. Individuals and organizations interested in helping out can make donations at the event registration desk.

El Azteca deli and grocery at 335 Ampere Parkway in Bloomfield will offer FREE samples of healthy food choices on Friday, May 20 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The store's generosity is in coordination with the Bloomfield Health Department's "Healthy Corner Store Initiative," a movement to make nutritious food more accessible in Bloomfield.
