Message from CEO
After 9 years at Gilda's Club South Florida, I will be retiring from my position as CEO June 1st. I have been so fortunate to be part of this wonderful organization seeing it become one of the most important and well respected non-profits in our community and the go-to place for cancer support.
I want to thank our volunteers, board members and donors who have provided the guidance I needed to lead Gilda's Club. I thank my wonderful staff who have honored our mission by never settling for second best.
Most of all, I want to thank our members who have helped create a community of support for each other so no one faces their cancer journey alone.
Gilda's will be in good hands. The board of directors has hired Kim Praitano, MSW/LSW, MBA as the new CEO. Kim comes to Gilda's with a very impressive non-profit background having served as COO at Family Central in Broward County and Executive Vice President of the Boys and Girls Club in Pinellas County. She has vast experience in strategic planning, staff and program development and fundraising. Please join me in welcoming Kim as she begins her new role.
So thank you all for allowing me to be the leader of this wonderful organization and for the opportunity to work with you to bring it to such a very good place. I will always be grateful for the friends I have made, the people who have taught me about strength and courage and most importantly, about what really matters.
As Dr. Seuss said- Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened
With heartfelt gratitude,
SNL Raises $140,000 to Support Programs
The 20th anniversary "Live from South Florida...It's Saturday Night" presented by Memorial Cancer Institute raised over $140,000 last month to help fund the comprehensive cancer support services offered at Gilda's Club South Florida.
The fun filled evening honored longtime CEO Shelley Goren and had special appearances by SNL's "Roseanne Roseannadanna" and "Matt Foley." Guests this year also had the pleasure of enjoying a live band courtesy of the very talented Keba. The evening's featured guest was Emmy Award winner, original SNL writer and best-selling author, Alan Zweibel, who moved the audience with stories of his friendship with Gilda Radner.
Special thanks to all the event supporters, volunteers and sponsors: Memorial Cancer Institute, Broward Health, Calvin, Giordano & Associates, Gold Aviation, Leo Goodwin Foundation, Richard and Marianne Reinisch Foundation, Sheltair, Interstate Asphalt, DEA: Digital Event Associates, Epic Media and RKY Management.
Healing Through the Arts
Gilda's Club has hosted several programs focused on the benefits of "Healing through the Arts" as part of its Healthy Lifestyles Project supported by the Harold D. Franks Cancer Fund of the Community Foundation of Broward. For many cancer patients and survivors using creative arts therapies helps manage the emotional and psychological side effects that may result from a cancer diagnosis and treatment. Research has shown it helps express hidden emotions and reduce stress.
