B&W sold to
Eva Automation
Joe Atkins, B&W's CEO has sold the UK speaker company to Silicon-Valley based Eva Automation.

EVA was founded in 2014 by Gideon Yu, a former Facebook chief financial officer and venture capitalist.

Reports say that Atkins will remain as CEO of the combined company, and Yu will be executive chairman. The Eva name will be dropped in favor of the recognizable Bowers & Wilkins. Yu and Atkins said there will be no staff cuts, and the company will continue to sell the current lineup of products.

In a statement issued today, Yu stated, "Bowers & Wilkins brings an incredible brand, experienced and well respected team and commitment to making a high-end audio equipment of unmatched quality. We at Eva share their same product vision and passion for home entertainment and look forward to creating fantastic home AV experiences together as one combined company."

ISSUE NO. 5/MAY 2016
Dear

Thanks to everyone who came out to AXPONA and to our in-house Alexx Premiere event. We hope that you had an unforgettable experience. We'd also like to congratulate our AXPONA Raffle winners - congratulations Kevin & Andjela!

Section 1 - Our room at AXPONA received rave reviews! We were exceptionally proud of our system set-up, and we're happy to have our effort acknowledged. With the Alexx speakers now in-house, we are featuring our AXPONA system in our main theater room. Come hear what all the excitement is about!

Section 2 - Now on-display is the new McIntosh RS100 Wireless Speakers. These diminutive speakers feature the iconic blue meters, and they can be controlled through the new PlayFi app which allows wireless music playback from many streaming services. This really cool look is met with all the amazing convenience of wireless.

Section 3 & 4 - Playback Designs has released a new line of product, called the Sonoma series. This series mainly features two products: the Merlot DAC, and the Syrah Music Server. The Sonoma series is a giant leapfrog into the future with its open architecture design philosophy which puts no constraints on format or sample rate. This series extends their customers' enjoyment to the world of downloads, streaming and file playback.

Thanks again for your support last month!

Best Regards,
Paragon Sight & Sound Team

McIntosh RS100 Wireless Speaker
The RS100 wireless speaker allows you to easily add streaming music capabilities to any room you want. It features DTS Play-Fi® technology that gives the freedom and flexibility to wirelessly play the music on your mobile devices over your existing Wi-Fi network. Simply connect the RS100 to your Wi-Fi network, install the free Play-Fi Appleor Android mobile app or Windows desktop app and then you're ready to stream your music. The RS100 is a great first piece to introduce yourself to McIntosh's legendary sound quality and performance standards (standards not found in any other Play-Fi device except their MB50 Streaming Audio Player).

A single RS100 is all that is needed to start building your wireless speaker system; more can be added over time to expand your system. Up to 16 speakers can be connected to a single Wi-Fi network - enough for stereo playback in 8 separate rooms. With the Play-Fi app installed on all your devices, each device can stream different music to each room, giving all family members or guests control over what they want to hear in their room. Besides accessing your personal music library, the apps have built-in support for many leading online streaming services1 including Amazon Prime Music, Deezer, KKBox, Pandora®, QQMusic, Rhapsody®, SiriusXM®, Songza, Spotify® and TIDAL (subject to change), letting you enjoy all your streaming music on your RS100.

Playback Designs Merlot DAC

The Merlot is a new design from ground up and borrows elements from the existing  5- and 3-series product lines and combines them with new technologies in a novel  and cost effective package. Like all Playback Designs products, the Merlot was  designed from the inside-out to maximize sonic performance which is competitive  with many much higher priced converters and often even outperforms them.

With its many unique features it is the center piece of the entire Sonoma series. It ties all the various products together, the Syrah Music server, the OpBox disc player and the Pinot ADC. There is no audio format, no sample rate that cannot be played on the Sonoma series, even analog audio can be played. And then there is recording...a feature that is not commonly associated with playback. This system gives the Swiss Army Knife a new meaning.

Merlot DAC Features:
  • Up to 384kHz PCM and up to 11.2MHz DSD
  • USB, AES, Coax, PLink inputs
  • Headphone output with separate volume control
  • Balanced and unbalanced line level outputs
  • Differential discrete DAC (standard "Playback Designs" architecture)
  • Upgradeable Software by user
  • Recording software for file creation on computer

Playback Designs Syrah Music Server

The common understanding is that a "music server" is a computer platform running some kind of large operating system, a music playback application, and a remote control, mostly in the form of a state-of-the-art tablet. In fact, many customers took the same definition quite literal, bought a standard computer (laptop or desktop), downloaded any of the many available music playback applications and installed all the necessary software on their tablet - voilà, done.

Yes, it can work that way and provide a great deal of enjoyment. So can a DAC for $500. In other words, it is relatively easy to build a music server based on standard hardware and software, but it can be quite a project to optimize it for sonic performance and features that are sometimes desirable for audiophiles, much more than for more common iTunes customers.

The Syrah music server easily connects directly to your DAC via its USB port - it also features internal 2TB HDD storage, with optional SSD.

Syrah Music Server Features:
  • Connects directly to Merlot (or any other Playback Designs DAC) via USB
  • Easy and intuitive remote control via iPad or Android
  • Plays any audio from internal, external or NAS storage
  • Internal 2TB HDD standard, optional SSD
  • Streaming via DLNA
  • Automatic ripping from external drive (included)
  • Automatic retrieval of cover art, meta data from data base
