A Note From the Pastor

May is here. I am on the other side of my first Easter at Burke UMC and I am coming up on a full year here at Burke as July arrives. As a pastor finishes their first year, they begin the process of evaluating and setting their rhythm in their church setting. The first year is never a good representation of the rhythm the pastor will have in the church. There is too much experiencing of things for the first time. The second year is the time where they get in rhythm.

You may not use the word "rhythm" to describe the pace of life, but as a music person, it always seemed the best word for me. When you are in a music group and everyone is in time with each other, there is this synergy that happens. Rhythm is a strong, regular, repeated pattern of movement or sound. Flow or cadence are synonyms. May is that time where I begin looking at the rhythm...the flow of next year. This May, I will sit down with a big calendar and Katie and I, in dialogue with the staff, will begin mapping out where we believe God is leading us in worship this year. Amidst that we will be inserting service opportunities, fellowship time, small group schedules, children and youth events, and the many activities that happen at Burke. There is something beautiful when we get this together to see the rhythm of the year before us and the symphony of God's kingdom being formed. And we know that there are ideas and people and situations that will enter into that calendar...these new patterns and beats that will only make the rhythm stronger...make the kingdom stronger. There is nothing more exciting and motivating than knowing that God is working through each one of us and especially at Burke UMC. As we plan, be in prayer with us and pray about what ways you are an important part of the kingdom of God at Burke UMC.

-Pastor Jason

Youth Sunday was April 30!
What a special day at Burke UMC. The inspiring and talented youth provided all aspects of the worship service. Youth were greeters, ushers, lay readers, acolytes, singers, musicians, AV techs, and provided the message for both services.

Thank you to the Youth for all their work and for sharing their time and talents with the congregation. You guys are amazing!

It's Going to be a SUPERHERO kind of Summer!

Spring has finally sprung in Burke which means summer is right around the corner!  Children's Ministries has planned many super-sized, squash-buckling, unbelievable activities to keep kids (Preschool-through rising 6th grade) engaged and building their strength in God this summer.

We're excited to announce that Summer Sunday School kicks off on June 25th!  Preschoolers will spend each Sunday learning about heroes of the Bible using activity books and short movie clips.  Preschool will meet in Room 9 this summer at 10:30AM and will be led by Lindsey Lyons. Children's Church at 9AM each week will also follow a hero theme as we revisit familiar stories about David, Abraham, Nehemiah, Daniel, Esther, Peter, Paul, Thomas, and John.

Our 10:30AM Sunday School theme for rising K-4th graders is "Be a Superhero" and will focus on the qualities of superheroes - love, kindness, understanding, resilience, patience, spiritual strength, and many more. This curriculum is centered around the Bible verse: "Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." 1 Corinthians 10:31b (NIV). Volunteer Shepherds are needed to lead Summer Sunday School - we'd love for you to be a part of this team!  Sign up on clipboard alley (one week commitment) if interested.

Club 56 (rising 5th and 6th graders) will learn about the Fruits of the Spirit and will create a fruit-inspired superhero each week which will be on display in the Narthex. We believe that our preteen students hunger for something different from younger kids, but aren't often developmentally ready for Youth Ministries. Club 56 helps to bridge the gap by using a format similar to youth programs, but with subject matter and activities that address age-appropriate needs and issues. Creating "Captain Kindness" in the likeness of a strawberry suits the interests and activity level of Club 56 quite well!

Finally, our very popular Vacation Bible School camp will be held August 7-11, 9:00AM-12:15PM for Preschool through 4th grades, and Camp Mission EDGE is open this same week, 9:00AM-2:00PM.  Our VBS theme is "Hero Central: Discover Your Strength in God" where children will enjoy an interactive, energizing, Bible-based good time as they discover their strength in God! They will become Heroes and will explore how to serve God and understand God's mission for their lives! VBS activities include a high-energy opening assembly at Hero Central, interactive Bible stories revealing Hero Codes, Art Exploration, Science "Imagineering", Superhero Sports, Amazing Music, and Powerful Snacks. Hero Central VBS is designed to equip your Heroes for an active life with God. Your Heroes will discover a daily Hero Verse that will remain with them in their faith long after VBS.

During the week, your Heroes will hear about our mission project and how they can respond to a call for action.  VBS and Camp Mission EDGE registration is now open online on the BUMC website or forms are available in clipboard alley. ($20 per child for VBS; $40 for CME). Many volunteers are needed to run this summer camp for 200 children!  Contact Kristin Kelso, VBS Director at [email protected] with questions or sign-up on the Hero Central VBS Volunteer sheet in the entryway.

We look forward to an amazingly awesome Superhero summer with you and your children!

Servant Spotlight!

Our Servant Spotlight this week is Dean Miller. Dean is a member of the Chancel Choir who caught the vision for Desserts on Broadway and took the leadership of the project on! He spent MANY hours preparing, coordinating the prep work for decorations and desserts, setting up curtains, tables, and chairs - and so much more. He also sang stunningly in the show - bringing down the house!

Dean's passion, sense of community, and desire for people to use their talents to glorify God and support the ministry of the church - is inspirational.  We are so blessed by Dean and his creative talents.

Romy Visit

On Saturday, April 15, the United Methodist Men hosted Romy del Rosario, one of the lead missionaries in Cambodia.  Romy spent an hour over a delicious breakfast explaining the history of the violence of the Pol Pot regime in the 1970's and the mission of the UMC in the rebuilding of the crippled nation.  He particularly emphasized the need to educate the young people of the country, especially in science and engineering fields.  A year's tuition for one of these students is only $1800 - what a difference our contributions can make in strengthening this country!  The Chico's Cambodian Tea, being held on May 7 in our Fellowship Hall, will raise money for scholarships and other needs in Cambodia (tickets are still available in the church office!

Change the World

Our annual Change the World Festival is just 3 weeks away - Sunday May 21 from 10:00am - 1:30 pm!  As in the past, in addition to packaging 20,000 dehydrated meals for distribution to feeding programs in hungry countries, we will be assembling birthing kits, school bags and health kits for our delegates to take to Annual Conference in June.

The bulletin board listing donations and help needed, and signup sheets to pick what shift you want to package dehydrated meals.  All other activities don't need to be signed up for - just pick up your "passport" at the front youth table in the circle and visit all the stations at your own pace!

What: Reach Mission Trips Work Camp
Where: Crossville, TN
Who:"" Rising 8-12 graders and graduating seniors
When: July 9-15, 2017
Why:"" To foster a closer relationship with Jesus through helping others. Costs: $330.00

Ministering since 1992, Reach Mission Trips is a week-long mission of service to low-income communities. Working with local agencies and/ or local churches, our mission trips seek to make an impact on homeowners, communities, students and adults who attend. It is a life-changing experience as campers participate in activities that build community and self-esteem, encourages spiritual growth, and enables them to understand their role in combating poverty.

How will teenagers be impacted? A workcamp enhances the teenager's faith and provides them with the opportunity to experience the empowerment that comes with making a difference. Reach strives to enable teenagers to create changes in their lives and in their world. Teenagers will learn new skills. At the workcamp, you will hammer, measure, paint, hang drywall, repair roofing, caulk windows - the list goes on. New skills will be learned during this week of work. You DO NOT need to possess these skills before you come to workcamp. Through the activities and programs, teenagers gain valuable relationship skills - meeting new people, giving and receiving encouragement, making lasting friendships.

Living together for a week with other students, they will have the opportunity to learn from and about each other. "I had a lot of fun on the Reach trip last year. I still keep in touch with some of the people I met." Sophie Sofge, 7th grade. This trip will be July 9-15 in Crossville, TN.

Contact Anne Sawin ([email protected]) to sign up.

FACETS Breakfast

On Thursday, April 20, our very own Jonathan Kunkle spoke at the FACETS Spring Opening Doors breakfast (there were 600 people there, so speaking in front of them was no small accomplishment!) about his story and how FACETS and others, including BUMC, have supported him in the last several months.

Just this past weekend, Jonathan was able to use his skills as a trained electrician at our Rebuilding Together worksite helping with the more technical electrical issues being dealt with.

Jonathan said that just a few months ago, BUMC had made a home for him in our congregation and now he was able to give back by helping make a better home for our Rebuilding Together homeowner.

Lenten Brochure Events

Each year during Lent, we raise up 5 ministries to pray for and support financially.  This year, 42 families gave a total of $8800 for our 5 focus ministries - B5 (Brick by Brick by Burke), Rising Hope UMC Mission Church, Native American ministries. UMCOR Sunday, and Heart Havens.

The generosity of BUMC for both our own Burke ministries and those of the Virginia Conference never ceases to amaze me.  You are all such a blessing to people who need some support.

Rebuilding Together

This past weekend, over 40 members of BUMC helped do repair work on the home of a senior citizen living just down the street in Powell's Landing.

Ably led by team captains Mike Holmes, Mike Sawin, and Bob Read and landscaping captain Barbara Nowak, the house was really transformed.  To name just a few of the projects completed, both bathrooms were completely remodeled, the entire interior of the house was painted, and the front and back yards were cleared of brush and planted with perennials, mostly from gardens of BUMC members.  Everybody watched out for each other, making sure people stayed hydrated on these very hot days and that everyone stayed safe around all the power tools being used.

What a talented group of people we have here at our church!

CHICO's Tea & Fashion Show

BUMC's Annual Chico's Fashion Show and Tea will be held this year on Sunday, May 7 at 2:30.  Tickets are $20 ($10 for girls under 10) and are still available in the office during regular hours
The proceeds from this event are sent to support women's livelihood and girls' scholarship initiatives in Cambodia.  (Bring your favorite teacup with you!)

If you are feeling all "Masterchef" and would like to help prepare food for the event, please contact Rev. Judy Fender ([email protected]).

What Does It Mean for A Child to be A Christian?

By Kristin Kelso, Interim Children's Ministry Coordinator

On Easter Sunday, we had many visitors at our church - grandparents, aunts and uncles, friends, extended family and children. During the second two services, I led a total of 50 children to The Dock on the lower level of our church for a Children's Church lesson while Pastor Jason gave his sermon.  Probably half the children attending church on Easter weren't part of our regular Sunday School group - some live here locally and were "checking out" BUMC on Easter while others were from out of town visiting family.  Since it was Easter, I read a story about Jesus' journey from his Triumphal Entry in Jerusalem to his crucifixion later that week.  Because many children were first time visitors, their background knowledge about Jesus and church in general was unknown. When teaching about Jesus' life on Earth, children are often surprised to learn that Jesus had enemies and was hated by many people.  Of course, the question that follows is asking why some people hated Jesus.  To help paint the picture of Jesus as a "good guy", I refer to his teachings about God, love, salvation and forming Christian disciples.  This explanation typically satisfies their question and we move on.  However, I was taken aback on Easter Sunday, when one little girl of 8 years old asked "What's a Christian?"  And it got me thinking - what does it mean for a child to be a Christian? Let's get back to basics...
For a child, being a Christian means that you realize that you cannot be perfect on your own and that Jesus is the Son of God and He came to live a perfect life for you and to die in punishment for our sins. We've all done wrong and we all need Jesus! When you accept Jesus as the Son of God and as your Savior, He actually comes to live in your heart! Pretty cool, huh?

This means that when you die, you'll go to heaven. It also means that Jesus is your brother and you are God's own child! And all other Christians are your brothers and sisters too! Isn't great to be part of a big family like God's family?

So, how do we, as parents, grandparents, mentors, teachers, leasers, and friends, help the children in our lives "be" Christians? We believe that God is who He says He is, and that He can do what He says He can do.We build a relationship with Jesus which is just as real as your relationship with your best friend. And just like the more you spend time with your best friend, the more you start to act alike, the more time we spend with Jesus, the more we'll start to act like Him. We encourage children to show kindness, teach empathy, and be thoughtful of others before themselves.  Are we, as adults, doing a good job of modeling Christian values for our children and grandchildren?

I hope so! But... if you need to brush up on being a Christian? Visit me and the kids in Children's Church or Sunday School anytime!

Charge Conference: May 9, 7PM

Dear Burke Family,

I am writing to our membership to let you know about a charge conference coming up on  May 9th, 2017 at 7PM. The purpose is two-fold. As we named in worship, we are excited that we are able to have an Associate Pastor next year and even more excited that Katie Webster has been appointed at Burke UMC. Part of the process of a new pastor is setting their compensation package. We will approve these numbers at the charge conference.

The other purpose is related to finances. In 2001, Burke Church took out a mortgage for a little over $1,300,000. Over the last 15 years, the congregation has been faithful in meeting its yearly expenses, while managing to reduce that debt to a little under $200,000. That has been a huge accomplishment! Before I came a year ago, there was a downturn in finances and the church inflicted some major property expenses due to an aging building, clearing out much of its contingency money. Over the last year, although we have an increase in financial giving, the property issues have expanded and I have made a commitment to address issues in property rather than try to band-aid the situation, which would only cost us more in the long-term. These repairs and upgrades will cost us more than we can finance in a normal budget cycle.

Knowing that we have to refinance our mortgage in a little over a year and we need some money to get us through some of these issues, the Administrative Board has approved for the Finance and Trustees committees to pursue a refinance/loan that will not exceed $500,000 total. In pursuing this with the Virginia United Methodist Foundation, and not knowing exactly what all the expenses will be, the direction that was suggested was a refinance of the $200,000 mortgage and a line of credit for the remaining $300,000. This allows some flexibility if we do not end up needing to spend the total amount of money. These repairs and upgrades will be evaluated, pursued and completed in the next year. At the completion of the work, all that has been spent will be combined with the mortgage into one loan. We will make final approval on the refinance/line of credit at the Charge Conference.

If you want to know more information or have questions, there is a more in-depth explanation available in hard copy in the office or you can contact the office for a copy. You can also call me at the church office or talk with any of our administrative committee chairs (Ken Panos, Wes Griffin, Bruce Tiso, Susan Kinsley, or Robert Greenwood).

Blessings in this Easter Season,
Rev. Dr. Jason Snow
