|
There is still plenty of time to make arrangements to attend the IABC World Conference in Washington, D.C., happening 11–14 June. This year’s theme is “Global Business: Lead Communication—Make Real Impact,” representing our mission to elevate your career and highlight the global rise of communication as a business-crucial part of any organization. The conference is packed with exciting keynotes and breakout sessions with speakers that align to the IABC Global Standard and this is a great opportunity to connect with communication professionals from around the world. Check out the event schedule on the World Conference website.
IABC appreciates all of the support from chapters in helping to promote this exciting event. To show our appreciation of your hard work, we are offering an opportunity for your chapter to win five seats to a self-paced IABC Academy course. On 31 May, the chapter with the highest percentage of their members signed up for World Conference will receive this prize. We’ll choose three winners, one each from the small, medium and large chapter categories. Winning chapters have three excellent self-paced courses to choose from: Managing Communication to Drive Results and Value, The Communication Audit, and Strategic Communication Planning. Your chapter may choose to have all five seats in one course or mix and match. Check out our media room for tools to help you promote World Conference, and get your members registered for #IABC17 by 31 May for your chance to win!
Annual General Meeting The Annual General Meeting (AGM) will take place on Saturday, 10 June, at 3:30 p.m. EDT at the Washington D.C. Hilton. The AGM will include ratification of the 2017–2018 international executive board slate of officers, a discussion of IABC’s financials (including the audit report), a vote on the revised IABC Bylaws (additional information to be shared in the coming weeks), and a peek at the #IABC1720 strategy. Chapters that will have a representative on site to vote on behalf of the chapter should complete the delegate form. It is important that each chapter has representation to vote during the AGM. If your chapter will not have a representative on site, please contact your region to determine who will be able to serve as a proxy for your chapter. All chapters who will not have a voting delegate should complete the proxy form to let us know who will be voting on behalf of the chapter. Learn more about the AGM on the IABC website. Chapters and regions must complete the proxy or delegate form by 31 May 2017.
Leaders’ Reception As a small token of our appreciation to you, our leaders, we invite you to attend the 2017 Leaders’ Reception at the World Conference. Join us for a drink and some hors d’oeuvres to celebrate your accomplishments and the hard work that you have contributed to IABC during the past year. The reception will take place on Saturday, 10 June, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. EDT in the Washington D.C. Hilton courtyard. All chapter and region leaders are welcome to attend the reception even if they are not attending the conference. Please be sure to register to attend the reception by 2 June. Additional guest passes can be purchased for US$50.
Foundation Reception The IABC Foundation will be hosting a special networking reception on Tuesday, 12 June, from 4:45–6 p.m. to highlight the ongoing work of the Foundation. During the reception, we’ll be sharing some updates about the Gift of Communication and “Gift” events held over the past year, along with future Foundation plans. Chapter spotlight: IABC South Carolina
|
|
We asked Alison Shuman, president of IABC South Carolina, to share some insight into the chapter's mini-conference professional development program. Continue reading to learn more about what makes their mini-conference programming so successful. IABC South Carolina hosts a mini-conference to offer extended professional development programming and boost chapter funds. What’s behind the success of this event? The IABC South Carolina began hosting a mini-conference in 2012 to target the needs of nonprofits across the state while also satisfying the needs of members and non-members who attend our monthly professional development luncheons. The mini-conference allows our chapter to help build a stronger network of communication and marketing professionals across the state while also educating nonprofits about resources available to them. Each year, the board plans sessions that will review communication and marketing standards while addressing industry trends. This helps engage various audiences and make them aware of IABC South Carolina and the monthly professional development programing available. Also, by offering an extended professional development program, the chapter can charge more for attending, which helps boost chapter funds. What does the mini-conference programming and schedule look like? Each June, IABC South Carolina hosts a mini-conference which offers extended programming that begins with registration from 11:30 a.m. to noon and kicks off with a typical IABC luncheon and speaker followed by two or three additional sessions on various communication and marketing topics. The entire program usually ends around 4 p.m. to allow those who attend time to travel home and not require a hotel stay to keep cost of attending minimal. Below is this year’s schedule to give you an idea of the schedule and topics covered:
11:30 a.m.–12 p.m. Registration
12–1:05 p.m. The Creative Approach Always Wins Don’t get stuck inside a box! More times than not, the best approach to your marketing, communication or design strategy, is thinking differently. Tim Floyd, a native South Carolinian, artist and creative director for Palmetto Health, will lead you on a journey to find the best and most creative approach to your next campaign.
1:05–1:15 p.m. Break
1:15–2:15 p.m. Social Media Panel: Trends and Best Practices It’s here to stay and it’s constantly changing—make sure you’re in the know about the latest and greatest social media tools and best practices! Kevin Floyd (past president of IABC/SC) will moderate a panel including C.J. Lake (U of SC social media strategist), Michael Ettlemyer (public relations and communications for U of SC College of Engineering and Computing) and Kara Gormley Meador (former journalist, current communications consultant and executive coach).
2:15–2:30 p.m. iPhone Photos Tips and Tricks Sometimes a great story can’t wait for you to schedule a photographer. Chris Merck, creative director for SCANA, will teach some simple tips and tricks for making the most of your iPhone photos when you’re on the go.
2:45 p.m. Break
3–4 p.m. Reaching Your Audience in a Changing Media Market We’ve all heard newspaper readership is shrinking, but what does the data really tell us? Where do we reach audiences in a changing media landscape, and how do these changes affect creative development and messaging? Teri Buonasera and Zach Cox of Buonasera Media Services, South Carolina’s largest dedicated media placement agency, will explore these questions and more.
4–4:10 p.m. S.C. State Museum Update S.C. State Museum public information officer will update attendee on what’s new and coming up in the future at the museum.
4:10 p.m. Final Announcements/Adjourn (Conference attendees will have free museum admission for the rest of the day and may visit the exhibits if they wish.) How does IABC South Carolina use board members to make this event a success? The past several mini-conferences were hosted by an IABC board member, allowing the chapter to keep the event costs down since the meeting space was provided or negotiated to use for free. This allows the board to keep the registration cost reasonable by only having to cover the cost of the attendee’s lunch and speaker gifts. Depending on the year and speaker line-up, the board has agreed to pay speaker travel or a larger speaker honorarium, for example when Molly Barker from Girls on the Run spoke the June following the Leadership Institute that she keynoted. The board will normally agree to a larger honorarium if they feel the speaker will have an impact on attendees and help boost the IABC brand. Typically the registration cost is US$45 for members, US$55 for non-members, Us$35 for students and US$65 for those who register late or the day of the event. How does the chapter market the mini-conference? IABC South Carolina sends an email invite to all those who are IABC South Carolina members or have attended a chapter event in the past. Plus, save-the-date cards are distributed the month or two prior during the regular monthly luncheons. The mini-conference is also listed on the IABC South Carolina website and boosted on the IABC South Carolina Facebook and Twitter social media sites. The social media boosts allow the chapter to target nonprofits and non-members. This seems to work since it has attracted 40–60 attendees each year and typically is about the max attendees our meeting room space can accommodate.
