May 2017 News & Notes
SHARP Grant Program Allocated in Record Time
Applications for the $1,000 exterior home repair grant program that's known as SHARP, went out early and in record time. In less than five days, more than 160 SHARP applications were completed by city of Syracuse homeowners for everything from new storm doors to porch repair. Many thanks to SUN and NEHDA for helping to get the word out about the program and inviting residents to apply.

While funding for this and many other programs supported through Community Development Block Grants (CDBG), HOME Funds and the Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) fund is still in jeopardy from federal budget challenges, our local representatives and others do not support cuts and have proposed keeping the funding through the end of the year. Mr. Ferrer Wants You to Know a Few Things About Owning a Home

When Leonides Ferrer moved to Syracuse from Puerto Rico in 2004 with his wife, son and granddaughter, he didn't think twice about renting an apartment.

He and his family had always rented in Puerto Rico with its high cost of living and owning one's home, being a rare occurrence for a small percentage of the population. A little over a year ago, Leonides ran into a friend who couldn't stop talking about classes he was taking at the HomeOwnership Center at Home HeadQuarters.

"I realized, after speaking with my friend, that in the long run, you end up paying almost triple for rent and you have nothing to show for it. I signed up for the classes immediately. Everyone should do this." said Mr. Ferrer.

In less than one year, Mr. Ferrer and family were the proud owners of a Home HeadQuarters' renovated house in the city's Court-Woodlawn neighborhood on a quiet, street filled with gardens and trees. Mr. and Mrs. Ferrer feel a sense of pride in being the first of their families to own a home and are already making some "renovation" plans of their own.

"Next step?" asks Mr. Ferrer with a smile. "We're putting in central air!"

Meet Lending Administrator Cleyson Lino

Cleyson comes to Home HeadQuarters from Guatemala with a stop in New York City and then to Morrisville State College, all before landing in Syracuse.

Cleyson is Home HeadQuarters' Lending Administrator, a newly-created position that will help direct and care for first-time and returning loan customers. As a fluent Spanish speaker, Cleyson will also help translate for those customers who feel more comfortable communicating in Spanish.

He's a big sports fan and a pretty good soccer and football player himself, but the accomplishment of which Cleyson is most proud is the fact that he is the first person in his immediate family to graduate college. Cleyson hopes to become his very own Home HeadQuarters lending customer when he purchases his own home. Welcome to Syracuse and HHQ, Cleyson Lino!
