May 2017 - Seattle

Mother's Day Spring Baskets
YWCA

Date/Time: Thursday, May 11, between 8am and noon

Location: East Cherry YWCA, 2820 E. Cherry Street, Seattle

Help put together gift baskets for the moms who live in YWCA emergency shelters. For these moms, resources are low and stress levels are high. Because they are so focused on keeping their families together, these women usually take care of themselves last. In honor of their special day, the YWCA would like to pamper these moms with a gift basket filled with soaps, lotions, candles, creams, hair products, planners, an unsigned card, and chocolates. Your family can help so we can put together enough Mother's Day Baskets for every mom in YWCA emergency housing! Buy a pre-made gift basket or create a basket filled with handpicked treats and toiletries.

Ages: All ages are welcome to participate

Time Commitment: Varies

Date/Time: Saturday, May 13, 10am - 2pm

Gallagher Hill is an 11-acre natural area that is part of Mercer Island's open space system that includes 35 parks, 350 acres of open space and over 50 miles of trails. Volunteers recently worked to build a new trail through this open space that serves as an important connection between City Hall on SE 36th Street and residential areas along E Shorewood Drive, encouraging pedestrian access through the area and increasing walkability around the island. Volunteers have begun the process of removing invasive species and replanting native vegetation to facilitate the growth of native plants and trees and restore this open space back to a healthy forest. Such efforts to promote a healthy understory are critical to ensure the success of this natural area. Volunteers will continue this effort be removing encroaching English Ivy and Himalayan Blackberry throughout the site.

Kids Helping Kids
Wellspring Family Services

Date/Time: Children are invited to drop off their donations at Wellspring Family Services between 9 am - 4 pm, Monday - Friday. Wellspring is happy to provide age-appropriate tours of our agency so children can see the impact of their donations.

Location: 1900 Rainier Ave S, Seattle

Wellspring Family Services builds emotionally healthy, self-sufficient families within a safe, caring environment. Kids Helping Kids (KHK) is a youth philanthropy program that invites children to make a difference in the lives of their homeless peers by collecting coins for Wellspring Family Services. The first step is for children to either pick up a KHK jar from the Wellspring office or to create a coin jar on their own. The next step is to get creative and start filling the jar with change! Some children contribute a portion of their allowance money, others host a bake sale or lemonade stand, and some even offer to do extra chores around the house. For a list of age-and campaign-specific fundraising ideas for your children to start filling their jars, click here.

Environmental Service Projects
EarthCorps

Date/Time: Saturdays, 10am - 2pm (weekday events are also occasionally available)

Location: Seattle, Kirkland, Mercer Island, Tukwila, Tacoma, Federal Way, Shoreline and more. Check the EarthCorps calendar for weekly project locations.

Each year, EarthCorps leads more than 10,000 volunteers in environmental service projects in western Washington. While the exact tasks at hand vary, EarthCorps projects focus on improving the forests and parks in our local cities. Healthy and thriving forests are vital to our community because they absorb and naturally filter rain water, absorb toxins in the air, produce clean oxygen, provide living spaces for wildlife, and they create a place for people to connect with the outdoors. In order to help create healthy forests, we focus on removing aggressive weeds (like English Ivy or Himalayan Blackberry), maintaining areas where these weeds have been removed, and planting trees and shrubs during the rainy season. EarthCorps supplies gloves, tools, water, light refreshments, and volunteer education. EarthCorps will provide everything you need to know about tool use and safety, forest health, information on the park, and the importance of the work you'll be doing. No prior experience necessary, just come ready to learn something new!

Let's multiply kindness!

Thank you to everyone who attended our April 20th Celebration and helped us raise funds to empower families to raise children who care and contribute!

Those big-hearted efforts have a multiplying effect: As families do more good for others, they start a family routine of giving that benefits others now and in the future.

Whether you want to support one family or several, your donation helps us multiply kindness and extend DGT's reach to families across the nation.
