Provide Weekend Hunger Bags for Children in Need
Backpack Brigade

Date/Time: Varies depending on your chosen volunteer activity. View monthly calendar for selected dates and times. Shifts needed include:
  • Wednesday: Prep & Inventory, 10am - noon
  • Thursday: Set Up Groups, 9am - noon
  • Friday: Set Up & Packing, 8:30 - 11am
  • Friday: Delivery, 10am - noon
Location: 831 Seattle Blvd S, Seattle

Many displaced students rely solely on the free breakfasts and lunches they receive at school, so weekends and breaks leave them without a reliable source of food. Every Friday during the school year, our volunteers pack bags of nutritious, easy-to-eat food and drop them at area K-8 schools, where they are distributed to students in need. In addition, boxes of healthy snacks are delivered to area high schools for hungry older teens. Powered by volunteers and strengthened through donations, Backpack Brigade aims to provide better food to more of Seattle's hungry children each weekend. Volunteers are needed in the following areas:

Inventory & Prep: Inventory and prep volunteers do the advance work to make sure our busy Fridays go smoothly, by taking stock of our supplies and getting everything ready for our packers.
Set Up: Set-up volunteers to organize our supplies into food groups and arrange them on tables in our packing area.
Pack: Packing volunteers create nutritious meal-packs from the food tables in our staging area. They ensure all packs have appropriate items, confirm that we've covered all schools and kids, and that all packs are loaded into the delivery vehicles.
Deliver: Delivery drivers take our meal packages to our supported schools, using their own vehicles. We will coordinate with you on a delivery route that works for you and any size vehicle is great.

Ages: All ages welcome with adult supervision.

Time Commitment: Varies

Mother's Day Spring Baskets
YWCA

Date/Time: Thursday, May 7 between 8am and noon

Location: East Cherry YWCA, 2820 E. Cherry Street, Seattle

Please help host a Mother's Day basket for one of our 1,000 families in the YWCA of Seattle's E. Cherry Region! We want to help every kid in our program enjoy the normal celebrations of childhood whether their family is homeless, fleeing domestic violence, or in transition. One way the YWCA tries to do that is by helping them celebrate holidays like Mother's Day. To host a basket, we ask you donate a card for the children to sign and that you purchase a few nice things for Mom. Basket items can include items like chocolates, soaps, lotions, candles, hair products, planners, and more. We will need close to 1,000 baskets to cover all programs. Please consider sponsoring a family or getting a group together and sponsoring 100...every single donation helps.

Ages: Everyone is welcome to participate

Northwest Folklife is a year-round nonprofit organization dedicated to creating opportunities for all people to celebrate, share, and participate in the evolving traditions of the Pacific Northwest. Help Homeless Youth
YouthCare

Date/Time: Donations can be delivered Monday through Friday 9am - 5pm

Location: 2500 NE 54th St., Seattle

It's hard for most of us to imagine carrying all of our belongings - from hygiene supplies to clothing and shoes - on our back. Homeless youth face this challenge on a daily basis. You and your family can help by donating backpacks and the supplies needed to fill them. Or you can help spread the word and raise awareness about the issue of youth homelessness by doing a drive for needed items, which is a great way to help youth get the items they need to get off the streets and prepare for life. This is also a great opportunity to start a conversation in your family and community about what it would feel like to be homeless (i.e. why are socks so important?). Your support makes a big difference! Most current and urgent needs are for:
  • Backpacks & school supplies
  • Prepaid phones & minutes
  • Hygiene items (shampoo, liquid soap, razors)
  • Jackets & hoodies
  • Sleeping bags
  • New pillows
  • Gift cards (Safeway, Fred Meyer, Target, Ross, etc.)
You can also order from the YouthCare Amazon.com Wish List - items will be shipped directly to YouthCare!

Ages: Everyone is welcome to participate.

Time Commitment: Varies
