THE NATIONAL COALITION OF GIRLS' SCHOOLS
May 25, 2018
Dear NCGS Community,

We are excited about the robust programming available at the Global Forum on Girls' Education® II and are pleased to share we recently added a fifth pre-conference workshop and an eleventh illustrious speaker:

School Sustainability: Developing a Financial "Health & Wellness" Team
Kent Place School CFO Genevieve Madigan, NBOA Director of Research and Member Resources Mary Kay Markunas, and Graham-Pelton President and CEO Elizabeth Zeigler will address questions related to ensuring a school's financial sustainability and assessing its financial health. Participants will learn various ways to get a clearer picture of their school's financial strengths and weaknesses, such as the Composite Financial Index (CFI); how to clearly articulate their school's needs in a unified fashion to boards and donors; and current trends -- such as increased competition and new financial aid strategies -- that may affect their school's bottom line. This is an excellent session for board members, who are welcome to attend only the workshop without registering for the entire conference by using the code GF2018PRECON.

Lieutenant Colonel Lucy Giles, an officer of the British Army's Royal Logistics Corps, broke through the glass ceiling when she became the first female commander of  New College, Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst in its 300-year history. She has served on operations in Sierra Leone, East Timor, Bosnia, Iraq, Northern Ireland, and Afghanistan. Lt-Col Giles is hosted by partnering organization Girls' School Association in the UK.

Conference sessions will cover universal themes in girls' education such as Research, Leadership, Innovation, STEAM, Health & Wellness, Equity & Inclusion, and of course Global Citizenship. Over 25 sessions, for example, related to Global Citizenship will be presented by experts from the UK, Canada, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Columbia, and the US. Included is the pre-conference workshop, Defining and Designing Global Citizenship Education for Girls.

Three days, five pre-conference workshops, eleven keynote and featured speakers, over 160 breakout sessions, and countless networking opportunities. Don't miss the largest professional development event dedicated to the education and healthy development of girls! Offered only every three years, the next Global Forum on Girls' Education won't happen until 2021.

Registration for the Global Forum II closes in just two weeks. Register today!

See you in DC!

  • Session I: June 11 - July 6
  • Session II: July 9 - August 3
  • Session III: October 9 - November 2
REMINDER: CLEVELAND EDUCATING GIRLS SYMPOSIUM CALL FOR PROPOSALS

NCGS is accepting proposals for the Educating Girls Symposium at Laurel School in Cleveland, OH, on October 1, 2018. This professional development opportunity is for educators to convene and exchange best practices for teaching and working with girls.

How do our schools create a warm and welcoming sense of community? Exploring this question will be the focus of the final installment of our "School Communities: The Power of Many Voices" series. How do the various communities in your school -- students, teachers, administrators, admissions teams, advancement officers, parents, alumnae, and more -- collaborate to create a space where girls feel safe, valued, and successful? How does your school resolve conflict when any one of these voices is perceived to overshadow others? Discuss these questions and more in peer-led breakout sessions and hear from keynote speakers Dr. Lisa Damour, author of Untangled and Executive Director of Laurel School's Center for Research on Girls, and Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, President Emerita of Spelman College.

We invite you to submit a proposal to present on your area of expertise. Click here to learn more about the call for proposals process. The submission deadline is June 4, 2018.
NCGS LISTENING & LEARNING TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

Director of Member and Administrative Services Paige Rannigan recently visited Village School, a 5 through 8 middle school in her home town of Charlottesville, VA. Located downtown, Village School uses the city and its resources as an extended campus. The students also connect with other girls their age beyond Charlottesville by participating in the Memory Project, a nonprofit that invites students to create and donate portraits to youth around the world who have faced substantial challenges, such as violence, disasters, extreme poverty, neglect, and loss of parents. The Village School has also established a pen pal program with NCGS member Gimnasio Femenino in Bogotá, Colombia.

At the upcoming Global Forum II, you can attend a presentation by Village School's Head Eliza O'Connell regarding a new curriculum about race and diversity that was piloted in 2017-2018.
