What a Feeling - POPS 2018 is Saturday evening!
First Church News & Updates - May 4, 2018

The Torch Be Yours concert last Sunday was awesome, inspiring, moving...you choose the superlative! More great music is on the way this weekend. What a Feeling - POPS 2018 will be on Saturday in the Family Life Center with a packed house. The POPS concert is a benefit for Boys to Men of God & Daughters of the King, a Christian organization that exists to provide mentorship in a family group setting to children between the ages of 6 and 12 who have experienced the absence of a father figure in their lives. Great music for a great cause!

Words from Will...
Holy Moments
Staff
One of the things I said in last Sunday's sermon is that our growth in grace makes us more aware of holy moments. Some of those moments you expect. Sunday night's The Torch Be Yours concert, a joint presentation by the Round Rock Community Choir and our Choral Union was one for the ages, beautiful and moving. Many, many people shared how much that evening of remembrance, faith and hope meant to them. I expect we will experience more holy moments in the What a Feeling! - POPS 2018 concert this Saturday night with our Handbell Ministry. I said to Tricia Gossett on Monday, "It's too bad we don't know how to do major productions here!" We both laughed. It's one of our niches for ministry in our regional area that we need to maximize. People will catch new faith or renewed faith in Christ as we do. Special thanks to Michael Rosensteel and Carla David for leading a host of musicians, tech folks, and organizers to make these events happen.

Some sacred moments catch us by surprise. Mine hit during Christian Believer, facilitated by Keitha Wilson and assisted by Rae Frenette and myself. As Keitha led us in our closing, she presented completion pins to all the participants and prayed over each of us individually. Then we celebrated Holy Communion together, a culmination of 30 weeks of learning, growing and loving in the name of Christ. I was having trouble reading my part in the service for the tears in my eyes - blasted allergies (lol!). I've read that Communion liturgy hundreds of times, but it was new in that holy moment. This experience will be repeated during the next few weeks in each of our DISCIPLE classes.

Then I walk into an Outreach Meeting and people are giddy with laughter over answered prayers. They really believe that stuff! And so do I! Those are just three holy moments in the last few days. The fact is this is a normal week. But you know, I can get so busy and overwhelmed with the different hats I wear that I miss the holy moments. Put on your spiritual spectacles...holy moments are happening all around you. Some will await you this Sunday...some expected and some by surprise. See you there.

Sincerely in Christ,
Will Cotton Signature

Love Wins Book Study
New study begins May 13
In his book, Love Wins, Rob Bell addresses one of the most controversial issues of faith - the afterlife, arguing, would a loving God send people to eternal torment forever? Bell puts hell on trial and his message is decidedly hopeful - eternal life doesn't start when we die; it starts right now. Join our discussions, longings, desires, and insights as we explore questions about "who God is and what God is like and how Jesus fits into any of it."
Where/When: Sundays at 9:40 am, Bldg. 5-136. Contact Debby Utley (debbyfaeu@gmail.com) for information. All are welcome. No registration needed. Just come!
Life Truths
It's not too late to join this popular study!
Discovering Life-Truths Analogies from Nature Scenes meets on Sundays at 9:40 am in Bldg. 5-148. The study is led by First Church member and acclaimed photographer, Ted Keller. It will be based on his devotional book,  Fifty Feisty Photos for Daily Encouragement.

Ted says,  "As a nature photographer with a 'glass-half-full' outlook, I began to recognize visual analogies of motivational life-truths in my images as I recalled relevant Bible verses. Since the level of optimism in our attitudes and self-concepts affects our ability to cope, heal, grow, and excel in life, these energizing reminders can empower and strengthen us in all situations."   Please join us!

Heifer Project

Children's Ministry Mission for Spring is the Heifer Project
For the entire spring semester, all children's Sunday School offerings are going toward the purchase of livestock for needy families. Each class selected a certain animal as their goal to purchase. Heifer International puts faith into action with its time proven principle of passing on the gift. Every family who receives livestock agrees to pass on one or more of its animal's offspring to another neighbor in need.
Heifer Update
4.29.2018 Update:  Children's Ministry is celebrating the incredible progress of the Heifer Mission! Every grade has achieved at least their first, if not their second goal! Way to go!
