Rector's Notes- May 7, 2014

"Behold your Mother..." (Jesus Christ)

Look all around you outdoors this week. It is happening.  Life is sprouting and blooming all over the place. Mother earth faithfully rallies to the call to nurture new growth, beauty and abundance. It springs forth from her.

Look inside you this week, at your humanity - at being alive to witness the spring explosion in a state of natural wonder - and remember from whom you came, your Mother.

In the Holy Bible, we all know the name Eve. It is the name given the first woman in the sacred creation myth found in Genesis. But did you know that the name Eve means 'Life Bearer'?  And did you ever note that Life Bearer was, in that same scriptural reference, 'created in God's image'? (Genesis 1:27)  Let's celebrate the image of God present in the role of Motherhood this Sunday. Through our prayers, presence and song let's offer prayers for her, join her in spirit, and sing her praises. Bring her with you on your arm or in your heart. And if other important women and men in your life 'mothered' you when you really needed it (God bless them!) be sure to remember them in thanks too. I know I have been blessed with spiritual mothers since my Mother's passing and I am grateful. So let's behold our mothers this week from Mother Earth right on up to the saints who raised us, cared for us, loved and served us. They still do whether from heaven or here on earth. For such a love is eternal. Sunday is Mother's Day.

Faithfully,

Rev. Wm. E. Exner, Rector

Energy Efficiency Discussion
When you look at your energy (electricity, gas, oil, etc.)  bills do you feel you are spending too much and wasting the planet's resources? You are! But do you know how to reduce those bills and use less?  Come hear energy efficiency experts Nancy Nichols and Paul Button as they share low-cost ways to save money AND save the environment, and give advice on when it is most beneficial to contact a professional.

You will learn things like:

How to rearrange your furniture to use less heat and make your house feel warmer

How to get the government to pay for insulation that could save you hundreds of dollars on your heating, electric, and cooling bills for years to come

How to reduce the heat generated inside your home in the Summer and reduce your lighting costs

Join us May 20 at 6pm at St. Matthew's Church, 3 N. Mast St., Goffstown  in our effort to see how much the community can save.  Potluck dinner.  Bring something tasty to share.

Annual Spring Thing Yard & Bake Sale June 7, 8am-1pm

The trailer will arrive next week, May 14 to receive your good yard sale donation items.  All proceeds go directly to the Outreach Committee.  Please no tires, electronics or mattresses.  Clothing can be donated to the Community Clothing Center next door. Be sure to fill in the back of the trailer first and then stack up.
The purpose of the Outreach Committee is to help our neighbors in need.  The majority of our funds, which are raised at the spring and fall yard sales and through donations, are used to help local families.  We also have helped with disaster relief in the national and international level.

At our April meeting we voted to send $250 to each of three international charities that we had researched and feel that they do a great job.  The three are Episcopal Relief and Development, Save the Children, and Doctors Without Borders.

We hope that you will be able to help us raise more funds at the June 7th yard sale by donating household goods or baked goods.  We always need help with set up, workers throughout the day, and clean up.  Come and join your friends and make some new friends.  It is a great day of fun and fellowship.   There will soon be sign up sheets at coffee hour for your convenience.

Thoughts on ...

- Linnae Peterson, M. Div.

I recently discovered photography and have begun to actually devote some time to taking photographs. I find myself looking at things differently. I see the way light plays on the slats of a fence, or across a field and find

myself "framing" it for the camera, even when I don't have one. Beauty can be found in the most unlikely places. It crops up around the corner and catches us by surprise, yet taking the time to notice it, beauty will reveal herself to us in new and delightful ways. Often it is through young children we can discover the splendor around us. They make connections that we never would; the fallen tree in the back lot, becomes a pirate ship and the field, a fairy's playground.  To be able to delight in beauty, to pause and notice the wonder of it all, to see all that is around us, is a gift from God. Allow the young ones to teach you, and see the gift of splendor that surrounds you.

Stewardship -St. Matt's Needs YOUR help!

honor thee with our substance and be faithful stewards

of thy bounty."  (BCP pg. 329)
