From the Director's Desk...

AC4C will be hosting a Townhall Meeting on Underage Drinking at the June Retreat, June 28-29. You can find the information at this registration link. Many community coalitions across Iowa have or will be hosting local events. At the retreat we will be pulling together the successes of these events and the lessons learned. A great resource for planning a town hall is found on this website Through looking at what is working and where the gaps are within Iowa, we will be able to better align and make a case for the need for the proposed policy work we are trying to accomplish.

A recent study done by NORC at the University of Chicago to evaluate 20 underage drinking laws that ultimately save lives. In their study, nine laws rose to the top as most effective: Possession, Zero Tolerance, Fake ID Retail, Purchase, Use and Lose, Age of Bartender, Responsible Beverage Service, Dram Shop Liability, Social Host Civil Liability (click here for an executive summary).

We will continue to work towards understanding the existing laws and encourage more consistent and uniformity in the enforcement of many of the effective laws we have in place to assist in reducing underage drinking in Iowa. Drug Take Back Day

Many drug take back events were held throughout Iowa on April 30th and the events keep growing. The latest event resulted in over 9,000 pounds of drugs collected in Iowa, from 112 sites.

One of our partners, the Winnebago County Task Force, collected 234 pounds at their event! These events make a difference in our community and help bring awareness to prescription drug abuse.

It is important to get the general public up to speed on what we know regarding safety issues with marijuana and Rx drugs in particular. AC4C has worked with state partners to produce 10,000 brochures for statewide distribution. The funds were provided through a ODCP-JAG Diversion grant. and are available upon request.
