The Hub Designs Blog is becoming the Hub Designs Magazine!
The Hub Designs Blog started in July 2007 as a way to chronicle the development of the consulting firm Hub Solution Designs, and as a way to capture my thoughts on the master data management and data governance industry as it evolved.
Forty-six months and more than 290 articles later, we've outgrown the blog format, so it's time for some changes - we're going from being a blog to being an online magazine.

Next week, Hub Designs will be exhibiting at the Gartner MDM Summit for the third year in a row.
The Gartner Master Data Management Summit is the leading event for IT and business executives ready to unlock the power and the opportunities that MDM represents.
I've attended each year since 2008, and have found it very helpful in learning new things, networking with others in the MDM industry, and talking to past, present and future Hub Designs clients. Continue reading |
The newly formed Hub Designs MDM Think Tank recently received a briefing by Varonis Systems on its Data Governance Suite for unstructured data.
Varonis tackles the 80% of corporate data that doesn't reside in structured databases, and tracks ownership and data security in "messy" platforms like the Windows, UNIX and Linux file systems, as well as Exchange e-mail and Sharepoint content management systems. Continue reading |
Hub Designs gets requests pretty frequently from various MDM vendors to brief us on their latest products, "go to market" strategies, acquisitions, future directions, positioning, etc.
Recently, it seemed like the number of briefing requests was increasing dramatically, so with the help of a suggestion from Julie Hunt, we decided to form a group called the Hub Designs MDM Think Tank, and to do the analyst briefings in a group format. Continue reading |
by Kimmo Kontra and Pertti Karhu Business and IT alignment is a topic repeated ad nauseam. There seems to be a belief that the Holy Grail of IT is achieved once that alignment is in place. This belief applies strongly to Master Data Management (MDM) as well. Continue reading |

Where they do have data governance in place, it's usually done at an application or business unit level. Continue reading |

This is the second article in an ongoing series on Data Governance sponsored by SAP.
Using a Data Governance Maturity Model
Something that Hub Designs recommends early in a new Data Governance program is using a Data Governance Maturity Model to realistically assess how you currently govern data at the enterprise-wide level. Continue reading |
"Golden copy" is a term widely used in master data management (MDM), as we often see the master data hub as a golden copy of the data in the company's operational databases. Continue reading |

This session at COLLABORATE 2011 was presented by Manoj Tahiliani of Oracle.
Oracle's approach to master data management (MDM) is to Consolidate, Cleanse / Standardize / Cross Reference, Govern and Share. You only get ROI when you can share clean information across the enterprise. Continue reading |
This week, I attended David Butler's presentation at the Oracle Applications Users Group COLLABORATE conference.
If you don't fit MDM into an architectural vision, you're just throwing "stuff" at a problem. Continue reading |
I arrived in Orlando, FL today for COLLABORATE 11, the Oracle Applications Users Group (OAUG) conference.
This year, the Master Data Management (MDM) track looks outstanding. Continue reading |
Hub Designs sometimes highlights an MDM-related position as a courtesy to a friend of the firm. This position is being listed for Steve Minor at Microsoft, whom I've known for several years.
As our readers may know, Microsoft is working on a high end MDM solution (for its internal use, not as a product). Continue reading |
