Session 2

Un mot, des expressions / The word and his idioms

Allez, allez ! Et que ça saute ! Il faut se jeter à l'eau.

All languages possess their own secrets of meaning. One of the best-kept secrets and perhaps the most impenetrable are idiomatic expressions or idioms. Carriers of socio-cultural and historic meanings, either imaginative or metaphorical, the idiomatic expression is a linguistic construction in which meaning is in the expression as a whole and not in the individual significance of each word taken separately. It has been said that English is the language of idiomatic expressions par excellence, and that may be so! But French is not lacking in this regard. The richness of French creates expressions of surprising and unexpected contours. Idiomatic expressions call on nature, ancient Greek culture, colors, science, the parts of the body, the animal kingdom....

"Jugglers of words," who wish to become more proficient in French, both intermediate and advanced speakers, this course will launch you toward new horizons in the French language and culture from an original and unusual angle.
