Proposed League Program 2018- 2019

The 2018 - 2019 League program is the education and advocacy platform that we adopt at the annual meeting to move our mission forward.

"The LWV of the La Crosse Area will be recognized as a leader in citizen empowerment to actively participate in the democratic process and promote positive solutions to public policy issues through education and advocacy."

LWV La Crosse members were invited to submit issues for considera-tion in March. Board and program committee members participated in a planning session in early April. The draft proposed program was also presented at the April 7th Legislative Breakfast. All members are invited to review the proposed program  here prior to consideration and adoption at the Annual Meeting.

Please consider how you will share your interests, skills, experiences, and community connections to move the LWV La Crosse forward as the recognized leader committed to  "Empowering Voters. Defending Democracy."

Proposed 2018 - 2019 Budget

The financial committee reviewed requests from each committee and will present a budget for adoption at the Annual Meeting. Proposed budget available  here for your review.  The LWV La Crosse is especially grateful for members and community members who annually make contributions to our local League. Members are reminded that the LWV is classified as a non-profit and contributions are tax deductible.  Membership dues are $70.00 ($32 for LWV US; and $30 for LWV WI). Obviously, our local league depends on additional contributions to implement our programs each year.  Thank You to our donors!!  Membership renewal is due in early July.  Membership renewal for 2018 - 2019 will be accepted at the Annual Meeting.

The Woman's Hour: The Great Fight to Win the Vote
by Elaine Weiss

Amazon states this is the nail-biting climax of one of the greatest political battles in Ameri-can history: the ratification of the constitutional amendment that granted women the right to vote.

Margot Lee Shetterly, author of the #1
New York Times bestseller  Hidden Figures , states as follows: "Anyone interested in the history of our country's ongoing fight to put its founding values into practice-as well as those seeking the roots of current political fault lines-would be well-served by picking up Elaine Weiss's The Woman's Hour."

The opposing forces to the amendment included politicians with careers at stake, liquor companies, railroad magnates, and a lot of racists who didn't want black women voting. Others, women included, opposed the amendment, fearing suffrage would bring about the moral collapse of the nation. They all converge in Tennessee.

Hope to see you there.
Maureen Kinney

*NOTE: The room rental cost is $15 to be divided amongst participants. Only a couple of dollars at most per time - what a bargain!

Erin Grunze, the Executive Director of the LWV WI, has requested that we inform our members about the dates and locations of the remaining public hearings:

5/21, Turtle Lake
6/4, Madison

More information from the Wisconsin Public Education Network is available  here , and a copy of the statement provided by Judy Crain, LWV WI Legislative Committee member, at the DePere public hearing is available  here .
