Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them. While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven... (Luke 24:50-51)

I wonder how those disciples felt as Jesus ascended into the heavens, rising like a hot air balloon. Did they suddenly feel all alone, left to themselves, and unsure of what to do next? Or did they begin to realize the presence of Jesus in some new and different way?

Nancy Carroll, Archivist for Region 5 ELCA will be retiring May 25th, 201 7.   In announcing her retirement, Nancy shares, "the mission of preserving and making accessible the records of the ELCA is important in the on-going life of our church. "  Regional archives primarily include records of synod assemblies, synod directories, synod records of deceased pastors, records from closed congregations of the ELCA and predecessor churches.

Getting to What is Essential to Congregational Identity
One of my aunts recently passed on to me a gift book of short readings, "God Always Has a Plan B." One of the first snippets I read, by Barbara Johnson, told a brief story of a little boy who responded to a comment while watching his house burn down, that his home wasn't gone, only where home had been housed. That started me wondering what congregations might say about the nature of their congregation if their building was to burn or be unfortunate to be in the path of a tornado, as was Trinity in New London a few years ago.

Called into the World:
Devotions on the ELCA Social Justice Statements

What can we say as a public church centered in Jesus Christ? What do we value as a denomination? A great place to begin when addressing these questions is with our ELCA Social Statements, based on scripture and Lutheran teachings.

Thanks to former and current advisory council members of the Lutheran Office for Public Policy in Wisconsin, we are able to offer you an opportunity to engage with the social statements as a devotional.

Right now, some 1200 delegates from 145 member churches representing 74 million Christians in 98 countries will gather in Windhoek, Namibia for the Twelfth Assembly of the Lutheran World Federation.

Rethinking Church:
Better Questions, Bolder Experiments
Are we still doing Sunday morning just like it's 1950? In what ways have our worship, education and fellowship changed? How is the Holy Spirit forming community in our contexts in 2017? If you are ready to ask different questions than simply how to get people to come, Rethinking Church is for you!

Luther Seminary invites you to attend July 26-28, 2017.
