President's Note

Hello Friends,

Our Annual Spring Art Show is just five days away! For those of you who have volunteered to help with the show, we thank you very much! It takes a village to put on such a big show.

Thank you for donating a 5x7 piece and/or something for the raffle table, and food.

At the show there will be signup sheets for the following, once our gallery is open:
  1. Are you interested in doing a solo show?
  2. Are you interested in doing a group show?
  3. Are you interested in doing a class?
  4. Are you interested in volunteering in the gallery for a few hours? We are thinking of being open on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays during afternoon and evening hours.
  5. Are you interested in being on the Gallery Committee or being on the Board?
I hope you will also enter our "Paint the Town" Art Show with Gallery Sitka in July.

We plan to open the new art gallery in August with an art show. So, we are asking for you to register and choose only two pieces of your best work for our Grand Opening. Watch for a Call for Entries soon! We are also planning a photography show in the fall and a felting workshop. All these events will be in our new gallery space. We are getting excited!

See you at the Show!

Paintings and Puzzles
Jaffrey Civic Center, Jaffrey, NH

Juliet Bell exhibits Paintings and Puzzles at the Civic Center

Juliet Bell will display her paintings and puzzles at the Jaffrey Civic Center beginning Friday, April 27 - May 25 in the Display Case Gallery. Juliet began her career in theater design, building properties for a number of regional theaters in the U.S. including off Broadway, and eventually in London. In 1998, she founded BellArt, a wooden jigsaw puzzle company for which she created the artwork for traditional puzzles, and the designs for non-traditional wood stained puzzles.

Born and adopted in England and raised in the U.S., it was not until many years after pursuing a career in the arts that she found both birth parents and discovered they were artists. Not only had they worked in the theater, but both were painters. Her mother attended the Slade School of Fine Art, and specialized in watercolor painting. Her father was a distinguished and award-winning artist who lived and painted in Newfoundland and Scotland, and built Newfoundland's first dome house.

Juliet's current passion is oil painting. She is essentially self-taught, though she has taken many art classes, and gives credit for much of her development to Mark carder's on-line videos. Juliet's paintings have sold at several juried auctions including the Monadnock Arts Auction. Most recently, "Lily On Pond" won 3rd place at Renoartio's May 2016 competition. Juliet lives in a little house in the woods of New Hampshire with her cats, dog, and chickens.

The Jaffrey Civic Center is located at 40 Main Street, Jaffrey, New Hampshire, next to the Library, parking in rear. Hours are Monday-Friday from 10am to 5pm (closed 12-1pm), Sat 10am-2pm. Admission is always free. For more information about us, call 603-532-6527, e-mail us at [email protected], visit our website, or "Like" us on Facebook.

Sculptures by Ron Edwards
Nina's Nook, Turners Falls, MA

Mixed Media Sculpture by Ron Edwards
Nina's Nook presents Sculptures by Ron Edwards
May 12 to June 23

Ron Edwards is a retired mathematics professor and a self-taught artist. The small scale mixed media sculptures on display in this show are made from wood collected along rivers and in forests in western Massachusetts. These are painted with acrylic paint and often have handmade or found  objects affixed to them.

On his trips through the wood and along rivers, Edwards always uses a walking stick. In the last few years, the 82 year-old artist turned to making walking sticks. Each uniquely detailed stick in this show has a specific theme painted in acrylic paint.

Edwards is also the founder of Little River Press, which specializes in volumes of poetry, post card series, graphic art works, and conceptual art projects.

Nina's Nook is next to the Black Cow Burger Bar at 125A Avenue A in Turners Falls, Mass. Hours are Thursday, Friday and Saturdays from 12 to 5 p.m. and by appointment or chance: 413-834-8800.

Eight Week Woodcarving Class
Stone Cow Brewery, Barre, MA

Starting Saturday May 5, 2018
1:00 to 4:00 PM

This course is designed as an 8-week introduction to woodcarving. The first project, a carved pretzel, teaches all the basic cuts, working with grain in all directions, the beginnings of 3-dimensional carving, and rounding. At the end of the course students will have completed a 5" in-the-round, snowman.

I will provide all wood blanks and carving knives for students to use during classes. Safety is always stressed, so I insist on all new students wearing protective gloves on the hand that holds the carving, not the knife. I will have some available, but to ensure proper fit students are encouraged to purchase Kevlar gloves. They are available from carving suppliers or fish fillet gloves available at sporting goods stores and department stores will also work. I will also provide protective tape for carving hand (holding the knife) thumbs.

Call for Artists: All Around Monadnock Art Exhibition
Historical Society of Cheshire County, Keene, NH

June 1-September 7, 2018

The Monadnock Region means many things to many people. It is recognized for its natural beauty. It is known as the "Currier & Ives Corner" of New Hampshire because of its remarkably intact early New England historical record and built environment. It is known for its quintessential New England festivals and cultural events. And it is known for its people, from old-time New England characters to those who have come to love the region's heritage, culture and landscape. Our region illustrates the story of New England history, culture and natural environment.

What does the Monadnock Region mean to you? The Historical Society of Cheshire County and the region's artists are collaborating on an exhibit that will allow the artists to answer this question. The people, places, heritage, and culture of the Monadnock area will be recognized and celebrated in this collaborative exhibit. Artists are encouraged to create works that illustrate what the region means to them and how it impacts their own lives. The 40 towns of the Monadnock Region are recognized for their natural beauty and cultural heritage. This exhibit is paying homage to those characteristics of "our" region.
