Don't miss a hilarious evening of new works by nationally renowned playwrights performed by Washington's favorite actors! On May 18th actors Rick Foucheux, Kimberly Gilbert, Christopher Henley, Nancy Robinette, Michael Russotto, Kim Schraf, Deidra Starnes, and Craig Wallace will perform in readings of new plays by favorite Washington playwrights Norman Allen, Joe Calarco, Renee Calarco, Allyson Currin, Amy Freed, Jennifer Nelson, Ari Roth, and John Strand at Theater J at 10:30pm. The late-night Dramathon performance is being produced by The Theatre Lab School of the Dramatic Arts to raise scholarship funds as part of its Send a Kid to Theatre Camp campaign. Volunteers have been soliciting donations for the campaign since April 4. Those that bring in the largest totals will be performing alongside professional actors in a unique evening of original works. Last year's Dramathon brought in over $10,000 to benefit The Theatre Lab's scholarship fund. "Playwrights will have just 24 hours to complete a brand-new ten-minute play," Theatre Lab Co-Director Buzz Mauro said. "They'll write in response to a prompt, and they'll know which professional will be playing the lead in their play. It's going to be a blast for everyone involved-especially the audience!" Tickets for the Dramathon are $15, $10 for students, and can be purchased online or by calling 202-824-0449. Proceeds go to benefit the Send a Kid to Theatre Camp campaign. Theater J is located at 1529 16th Street NW, Washington, DC.

Master Class with Brooks Ashmanskas

Interested in what goes on in the mind of a Broadway actor? Here's your chance for a sneak peak at the inner workings of theatrical performance-how an actor goes from good to great. Tony Award-nominee Brooks Ashmanskas (John Adams in 1776 at Ford's Theatre) will present a special master class on Saturday, May 12 from 11am to 1pm at The Theatre Lab School of the Dramatic Arts. Mr. Ashmanskas will work with a group of pre-selected students on songs, monologues, and audition technique. Audience members will gain insight into the actor's process by watching a master teacher at work and participating in a Q&A session. Register online today!

Praise for My Soul Look Back and Wonder

The April 30th performance at the Kennedy Center of My Soul Look Back and Wonder, an original piece created and performed by women in recovery at N Street Village as part of our Life Stories program, was one of the most artistic and emotional undertakings we've ever engaged in.
Washington Post reporter Katherine Boyle called it "the most moving performance I've seen at the Kennedy Center this year." Read her full review here.
Thank you to everyone who attended the performance, and a special thanks to our event sponsors Development Finance International, Inc., the National Endowment for the Arts, Jim Cantrell, Myrna Fawcett, Gayley Knight, and the Hargrove Pierce Foundation. Most of all, we thank the 15 courageous women who turned stories of unspeakable pain into moments of extraordinary beauty and reminded us all why theatre matters.
And in case you missed it, be sure to check out the article on the performance that made the front page of the Washington Post! |
