A Community of Museums
The Rose Art Museum is still with us - a cause for real celebration during Museum Month. Join us at 3 pm on Sunday, May 13th when renowned critic Francine Koslow Miller will discuss her new book Cashing in on Culture: Betraying the Trust at the Rose Art Museum. Koslow's personal and factual account of Brandeis University's attempt to sell the invaluable collection of contemporary art housed at its college art museum is a compelling story for everyone in the museum community as well as a cautionary tale about permanent collections of art.
While impossible to judge another institution, especially during tough financial times, we can speak to what happens at the Danforth. As a non profit, we're charged with serving the public good. As an art museum, we fulfill this obligation by preserving, promoting and presenting art. This is what we do, and what we'll continue to do-regardless of economic challenge. Art can be bought and sold, but its real value lies in its ability to inspire us to think beyond our immediate situation. Troubled times demand creative solutions, and we need look no further than work displayed in our galleries or created within studio art classes to see valuable evidence of creative thinking.

New Growth
May is Museum Members Month, as well as a month that encourages us to consider new growth. Each year we are gratified to welcome increasing numbers of visitors to the galleries or students who enroll in studio classes, but recent submissions to our upcoming juried shows Off the Wall and Community of Artists indicate that an increasing in number of artists are engaged and inspired by what they find at the Danforth.
We're particularly pleased to announce that a total of 477 new or renewing member artists submitted work for consideration by Dr. Cody Hartley, a remarkable curator who currently oversees gifts of art to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. His selections will be on view as part of our Annual Juried Exhibitions opening June 3rd-please join us!

Who We Are - Cody Hartley

"Artists respond to the world around them," remarks renowned curator Cody Hartley who served as Juror for this year's Off the Wall. Choosing both representational and abstract works to describe the many ways artists record their experience of place, Hartley has created an exhibit that reflects a fascination with a variety of styles and media. As a result, our 2012 Off the Wall includes traditional landscape painting, 3-dimensional fiber sculpture, video installation and more. Maps make an appearance. Space often helps define surface.
Hartley's interest in art that explores atmosphere and location has been reflected in his past professional work. While Assistant Curator of American Art at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, MA, he organized Remington Looking West and co-curated Like Breath on Glass: Whistler, Inness and the Art of Painting Softly.

The Influence of a Good Art Teacher
Good art teachers affect generations of artists. In addition to their art, most artists who teach inspire students. Many members of our school staff were taught by or were colleagues of David Ratner, whose work is now on view in David Ratner: Artist and Teacher. On view in the Danforth Museum School Gallery through June 16th along with work by many of his former students. The show demonstrates Ratner's continuing influence.
We also teach teachers at the Danforth. Some Danforth students are already teachers, taking one of the Danforth's Professional Development classes. They can influence thousands of students in local public and private schools, using inspiration, ideas and methods developed in Danforth classes. Let us know your story and how the Danforth influenced you. Email Us with your story.

Become a Danforth Docent!
Docent comes from the Latin word "docere" which means "to lead." Docents are volunteers who lead visitors through the galleries and form the backbone of the museum education programs.
As for qualifications, a deep knowledge of art and/or teaching experience are not necessary. However, an interest in art is vital, as well as an open mind and a desire to help people from all walks of life be transformed by art.
Intrigued? We invite interested adults to attend the Docent Meet and Greet on Wednesday, May 16, to be held in the Danforth Museum auditorium and galleries from
11am -1 pm.
Teen Docent Program
This special program offers high school students the exciting opportunity to become part of a working art museum.
Over the course of the summer teens learn to give tours to children and families, explore careers in the arts, and "get behind the scenes" at the Danforth. They will also be invited to take at least one free art class.
This year the program offers some exciting changes thanks to support from the Sudbury Foundation. Teens begin with a 3 week intensive training period starting June 25, and then continue to meet every Thursday through August 17 to lead tours and participate in field trips to museums and other cultural institutions.
Interested? The deadline for teens to apply is May 18.
