This May marks many celebrations at DeKalb Medical. Thanks to a special contribution, the memory of our beloved Susan Parry, R.N. lives on through our Tree of Life. You may not know it, but Susan's history-making appointment to the DeKalb Medical Hospital Board made her one of the first nurses in the nation to serve in such a role. We are proud to celebrate her life and the impact and influence she has inspired in other nurse leaders.

Another easy opportunity to support the DeKalb Medical Foundation has arisen and it's as easy as swiping your Kroger Plus Card!  Read below to see how you can benefit DeKalb Medical while you grocery shop.

Also, be sure to read which deserving students are receiving scholarships this year to begin their radiology careers!

We spent five days last month showering our volunteers with the same special attention and acknowledgement they give to our patients and employees each and every day during Volunteer Week!

We are thrilled to have our Volunteen program in full swing as well with the maximum number of girls and boys enrolled for the summer.  Be sure to look out for them in the halls wearing their red polo shirts during the months of June and July!

Retirees Remember Susan Parry, RN
Leaf placed on theTree of Life in Susan's memory

Susan Parry spent a large part of her nursing career at DeKalb Medical before she succumbed to the consequences of a stroke suffered this past September.

After a brief retirement from DeKalb, she returned as chief nursing officer and Vice President for Patient Care Services, a deeply satisfying period of her nursing career. Finally retiring in 2005, Susan served on the board of DeKalb Medical and proudly co-authored, with Dr. O. Wytch Stubbs,
The DeKalb Medical Story-from Berry
Patch to Healthcare System.
After her passing in December 2013, the DeKalb Medical Alumni Association (retirees from DeKalb Medical) made a gift to the Foundation in Susan's honor.  In recognition of this contribution, Ms. Parry's name was placed on the Tree of Lifewhich symbolizes
strength, wisdom and life.
The Tree of Life can be found outside the Stubbs Auditorium in the lobby of the 2675 building on the North Decatur campus.

The Auxiliary Welcomes its Volunteens
High school students to volunteer this summer

The teen volunteer program at DeKalb Medical gives high school students an opportunity to test potential careers, to get experience that might help them get into the college of their choice and to learn what it is like to work in a large organization.

Each year, over 100 applications are reviewed to fill about 50 teen volunteer positions for the summer.

In 2013, teen volunteers donated more than 1,100 hours of service in a wide range of departments, providing valuable assistance to staff members, patients and families.  This year's group has an average GPA of a 3.8,  is comprised of 24% returning teens and their grades range from rising sophomore in high school to rising college freshman.

Last month, this summer's volunteens attended orientation to prepare them for two months in the halls of DeKalb Medical.   We look forward to having them as part of our team this June and July!

A warm welcome to our 2014 summer volunteens!
Thank you to our donors and volunteers that support our mission of strengthening the link between DeKalb Medical and the community we serve through communication, education, service and philanthropy. We are dedicated to improving the standard of health in our community by raising friends and funds for healthcare initiatives offered through DeKalb Medical.
