Keeping up with Uncle Moishe
By Al Zuckerman
I had my usual telephone "visit" with Uncle Moishe this week. I was telling him that Charlene and I were re-organizing the garage this spring and came across some old photo albums that my parents had kept, one of which had pictures of their parents. So I asked Uncle Moishe about his mother, Dora, who was in one of the pictures. He told me how she worked hard to keep a kosher home and how gentle a woman she was and also how very smart she was, too. Unc told me that one time she went to the kosher butcher shop just around the corner from where they lived on Fox St. in the Bronx. She asked the butcher, Mr. Horowitz, for a chicken that she was going to make for Shabbos dinner. Then Mr. Horowitz had only one scrawny chicken left and put it on the scale. Three pounds, he tells Dora. "Ach, that's too small", she says and asks him if he has anything bigger. So he pretends to rummage around and puts the same chicken back on the scale not knowing that Unc's mother had leaned over the butcher block counter and saw all this. With his thumb on the scale he announces that this one weighs three and a half pounds. Dora, says to him, "Goot, Mr. Horowitz, I'll take them both."

Jackson Hole Jewish Community Awards the inaugural Tikun Olam College Scholarship

JHJC Board President Al Zuckerman awards
JH Community School senior Marisol Hernandez the JHJC Tikun Olam College Scholarship.

Every year the Teton County School District holds a scholarship night where various organizations and individuals provide monetary scholarships to students that will be going on to college after graduating in June. This spring the JHJC Board of Directors decided to provide its first annual Tikun Olam scholarship award on behalf of the Jackson Hole Jewish Community to a deserving Teton County student. A committee was formed to review the 23 applications we received. Being faithful to the meaning of the phrase Tikun Olam the committee felt the recipient of this award should reflect those qualities that strive to heal or repair the world through good works and deeds in order to make the world a better place to live.
The committee that chose this year's recipient was in awe of the accomplishments of all the students that submitted applications. We certainly have an amazing and inspiring group of young people in our community. However, after reviewing all the applications the JHJC's choice for this year's scholarship award in the amount of $1,000 was granted to Marisol Hernandez, based on her good works in the community, her active citizenship and her leadership.
Among her many other good works Ms. Hernandez was president of her school's Philanthrophy Club which benefited the Food Cupboard, Latino Resource Center and the Community Foundation. She traveled to Guatemala to help build houses with Habitat For Humanity. Marisol also volunteers with the Teton Literacy Program, takes part in the Model United Nations initiative and still manages to find time to represent her school on the lacrosse team and the speech and debate team and hold down a part-time job, as well. Marisol has indicated that her future plans include continuing in the spirit of Tikun Olam by pursuing a career as a pediatrician. She plans to attend Bates College in Maine.
You can meet Marisol in person at our May 8 Bet Sefer Shabbat where she will say a few words at the beginning of services.
