Bone Marrow Drive Supported by SCCF
The Steuben County Marrow Donor Fund was established in 2000 by SCCF , Brook Steed and Mr. and Mrs. James Spangler, co-chairs of the project. The fund helps support bone marrow donation drives in Steuben County. In the early years of the fund, money was used to pay for blood draws. There have been drastic improvements to technology and medicine and today only a simple cheek swab is needed! Please consider joining a bank of eligible bone marrow donors in our community. The next drive will be held on Thursday June 15th from 9:00 – 3:00 at Cameron Memorial Community Hospital. A blood drive will also be taking place that day.
Thank you to the many donors who have contributed to this fund over the past 17 years!
Grantee Follow-Up: Therapeutic Riding Center
SCCF granted Therapeutic Riding Center of Steuben County $10,000 in 2016. This grant has provided financial assistance to clients. Diane Emrick of the Therapeutic Riding Center said, “this grant funding has been a blessing as we sought to make possible affordable therapeutic riding in this area for children and adults with disabilities. We have seen some amazing improvements in day-to-day joy and living for our clients. We have heard from parents in 4 of our families that their children have been able to avoid corrective surgeries due to physical improvements gained by weekly participation in therapeutic riding. We appreciate and value the compassion and financial support from everyone at the Steuben County Community Foundation.”
Students Celebrate Scholarship Awards
Students from Steuben County schools gathered to celebrate receiving scholarships from SCCF’s funds earlier this month. Some were fortunate to meet the donors who established them! SCCF awarded nearly $100,000 through 52 endowment funds designated to support student scholarships.
