It's hard to believe that May is here already, and we are busy preparing for the summer season. Our program and summer camp registration is in full swing. Space is limited, so sign up soon, as some programs are filling quickly.

The Outdoor Waterpark will open Memorial Day weekend, Saturday, May 27th. We will have the bounce house available on Saturday, poolside music on Sunday and games for children on Monday. Please review the club hours located within this month's newsletter for more information. We look forward to seeing you poolside in just a few weeks!

In good health,

Splash Café 2017

The start of a new summer season is an exciting time, alive with enthusiasm to enjoy relaxing at the pool with family and friends.  We are eager to provide our members with this experience and so much more.   We have seen a multitude of enhancements this year at the club....and it won't stop there. In response to member feedback, and to provide the highest quality service in the most efficient manner, we have made improvements to our Splash Café.  We have streamlined our offerings to avoid excessive wait times and to service our membership in the wonderful ways you have come to expect.  The outdoor cafe will offer the same quality food, but with a reduced menu.  Most snack items will be 'Grab and Go' and sandwiches and wraps limited to how they are pre-made.  For a more custom-made meal or snack item, you may visit Café Liberty indoors.  By increasing hours of operation at Café Liberty, and providing faster service at the Splash Café, you are sure to find a meal/snack choice that satisfies your hunger and allows you to return to fun in the sun at Liberty.

Fiber
From the Desk of Susan Cutshaw M.S.

The benefits of a high fiber diet have been credited with lowering cholesterol levels, improving blood sugar levels, and weight reduction.  Bottom line; a high fiber diet could reduce the risk for developing obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.  However, the Institute of Medicine reports most American adults consume roughly 15 grams of fiber per day instead of the recommended 21 - 25 grams for women and 30 - 38 grams for men.

Plant fiber differs from carbs, fats, and protein because it can't be digested or absorbed.  Instead, it passes through the stomach, small intestine, and colon on its journey through the body.  Dietary fiber is found in plants; fruits, legumes, vegetables, and whole grains.  It either dissolves in water, soluble, or it doesn't, insoluble.  Both soluble and insoluble fiber is found in all plants in differing amounts.  Good sources of high fiber are legumes, pears, oatmeal, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and berries.

It's a good idea to spread fiber intake throughout the day to avoid feelings of bloating, cramping, and gas.  Jessica Crandall, RD, recommends 5 - 7 grams per meal, adding 3 -5 grams with snacks.   When increasing dietary fiber remember to increase water intake as well.  The Institute of Medicine recommends that women drink approximately 2.7 liters per day (91 ounces) and men approximately 3.7 liters per day (125 ounces).
*Estimated water consumption is dependent on climate conditions, exercise level, and overall general hydration.

This is a very small list of fiber rich foods.  Nutrition labels also list fiber amounts per serving size.
