30th Annual Healdsburg Bicycle Tour

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 30th Annual Healdsburg Bike Tour. You'll notice we dropped the "Harvest" since we changed the date to April. We heard a lot of favorable comments from the riders who had done the July event in the past that the course was so green, and there was even some water in the creeks. It was nice to show off Healdsburg in another season.

I personally would like to thank the following Healdsburg businesses for their wonderful and generous response to our sponsorship request; Bear Republic Brewery, Redwood Moving and Storage, Bright Rentals, So Eventful, Golden Gate Landscape Management, Portalupi Wines, Williamson Wines, Geyser Peak Winery, Acorn Winery, Thumbprint Cellars, Syar Family Vineyards, River Rock Casino and Starbucks Coffee.

I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who helped with the heavy lifting and coordination that an event such as this requires.

Most importantly, I would like to thank my staff, Charlene Staten, Aleena Decker, and Christine Hyde for all of their support and hard work through the event. It was a major task tackling a new date, a new venue and food trucks!...and we did it.

Thank you to our 30th Annual Healdsburg Bicycle Tour Sponsors

Healdsburg Farmer's Market Starts Saturday May 7

The farmers of Healdsburg and the local region are proud to be peddling their produce at the Market's seasonal opening Saturday, May 7, from 9:00 to noon. The Market will be located in its usual spot in the North Street parking lot behind the Bear Republic and Hotel Healdsburg, and across from Shed.

But this is not a usual year. There's been plenty of rain to ripen the rutabaga, but no flooding to drench the daisies. Look for the goodness of early spring: leeks, green garlic, kale, carrots, lettuce, chard, arugula, strawberries, flowers and more.

So much more than vegetables is the flowering of community at the Market. Here you will meet your neighbors and friends to share stories around eating. Like a high school reunion you'll forget names, but say hi again to the folks who work so hard to grow your food. There's Yael Bernier, Emmett Hopkins, David Pew, Ed Miller, Lou Preston, Mat Humphrey, Renee Kiff, Mary and Bert, Joan and Horace, Stan and Terri, Jim Neufield, Duncan the mushroom guy, Sharon Vyborny, Russ Messing, Dan Magnusen, Sam who carries forward Nancy's spirit for Middleton Farm,  Manuel Reyes, the Basurtos and the Busalacchis. Hey, a hug is even better.
In a class of his own there is Alan Podesto, the Cloverdale guy who makes the ceramic dishes that make your food taste even better. And look for the new farms that are popping up like dandelions in the spring. Our Market welcomes Noci Sonoma and Porter Creek Farm this year, and there will be more.

Organic and sustainable are the new normal; many of our farmers are certified and all are healthy and wholesome.  Grass-fed is hot and it's at your market too. Say howdy to local ranchers Deb Owens and John Ford, visit boutique butcher Sonoma Meat Company, sample cheeses from West County and Mendocino, and rustle up a herd of seafood from Bodega. And enjoy the buzz of Hector's Honey with our friend Sandra.
Hungry at the Market? Try fried chicken biscuits from Backyard Restaurant, market veggies in a wrap from Green Grocer's Taco Farm, bag a baguette from Costeaux Bakery, or just munch your way from stand to stand while jiving to the bluegrass tunes of The Foggy Mountain Boys on opening day.

What better way to start your weekend? The Healdsburg Farmer's Market is in your town; it IS your town. Bring the family; become a part of it.

Healdsburg Farmers Market Does Kid Activities

Healdsburg's first Farmers Market of the season is upon us. Come together with friends, local farmers and food vendors this Saturday, May 7 from 9 to noon to celebrate the bounty of our fields and kitchens, in the North Street parking lot across from Shed.

"Our first market will have a kids' table for planting pumpkins", said Yael Bernier Co-Chair of the Market, "we'll provide the seeds and the dirt and containers, and the children can take home the beginnings of an award-winning pumpkin". Referring to the October Pumpkin Festival at the Market, she noted the resulting Giant Pumpkins will be judged for "the biggest and the most unusual".

In the course of the season there will be 20 or more local farmers selling their freshly picked fruits and vegetables at the Market, plus several vendors of tasty food products to temp your palate while you're shopping. There will also be an opportunity to catch up on non-profit community activities like the Master Gardeners, the Wine Library, representatives of City Hall presenting options for the future home of the Farmers Market, a Voter Registration table. And more kid activities every week. Get all your community networking done here.

And this Saturday set your feet a-tapping to the sounds of the Bluegrass Foggy Mountain Boys. See you at the market!

A play of mordant humor and character exploration, Immaterial Matters mixes Americana and history with a bit of a dark streak. Set in the 1880s, it is the story of a young, orphaned man who specializes in the most intense acts families can experience-post-mortem portraiture. In one of his first jobs, an artistic young woman takes a liking to him and follows him home... after she's died and he's taken her portrait. These two lost souls form a complicated and intricate relationship as the photographer and his "assistant" travel from home to home capturing the last and only images of loved ones who've passed on.
