Member's Spotlight

Healdsburg District Hospital Earned National Accreditation
As A Primary Stroke Center

HDH has earned national accreditation as a Primary Stroke Center. Stroke certification recognizes HDH's ongoing commitment and success with its high standard of stroke care. To earn the certification, HDH underwent a thorough and rigorous on-site review by surveyors with stroke care expertise.

"Distance matters in health care. Getting immediate medical care when you are having a stroke is the key to saving your life. Strokes are treatable when diagnosed and treated early.  I'm so very proud of our entire hard-working staff at Healdsburg District Hospital, especially our stroke certification team led by Dr. Alan Bernstein and Kate Ingram, RN," states CEO Nancy Schmid.

"HDH and the community are very grateful to Edward and Betty Kozel for their generous donation in 2008 for funding the Kozel Stroke Institute located within our Emergency Department. Our Code Stroke Response Team is specially trained to recognize, diagnose and treat victims of a stroke when time and distance matters," says Schmid.

"Ed and I are so very happy Healdsburg District Hospital has achieved stroke certification," said Betty Kozel. "It is wonderful to have this level of stroke care right here in our own community. There is a large senior population in the hospital's healthcare district. Our fellow seniors can rest assured help is near."

Other HDH stroke care components include a new, high speed CT scanner. Funds to purchase the CT scanner were made possible by a grant from the Kalmanovitz Charitable Foundation in conjunction with the Healthcare Foundation Northern Sonoma County.

HDH is also well-equipped to care for patients after they've had a stroke. Patients requiring a hospital stay may benefit from inpatient physical, occupational, speech or respiratory therapy. Outpatient therapy for our patients who have suffered from a stroke can receive the same therapeutic care at HDH's Outpatient Rehabilitation Therapy Services Department located at 1540 Healdsburg Avenue, 707-473-4400.

If you think you are having a stroke, call 9.1.1 immediately. Symptoms are easiest to remember by the American Stroke Association's acronym FAST:

F  -  Face Drooping -  Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to

smile. Is the person's smile uneven?

A  -  Arm Weakness - Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms.

        Does one arm drift downward?

S  - Speech Difficulty - Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to

understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence like "The sky is blue." Is the

      sentence repeated correctly?

T  - Time to call 9.1.1 -  If someone shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go

away, call 9.1.1 and immediately get the person to the hospital. Check the time so you'll

know when the symptoms first appeared.

HDH has partnered with Healdsburg Senior Center to offer a stroke support group led by Kate Ingram, RN and Karen Fraire, MSW. Meetings are held at the Healdsburg Senior Center located at 133 Matheson Street, Healdsburg. The stroke support group is open to Sonoma County stroke survivors and family members of all ages. Group meetings are held every third Friday of the month, from 2:30 to 3:45 pm. For more information on the support group, please contact Kate Ingram at 707-431-6349.

Sonoma County, Calif. (May 5, 2014) - The Sonoma County Waste Management Agency is hosting Bag Fairs May 13, 14 and 15 for retail and grocery store business owners and managers to meet manufacturers and distributors of ordinance-compliant check-out bags.

The Sonoma County Waste Management Agency Ordinance No. 2014-2 Establishing a Waste Reduction Program for Carryout Bags, legally went into effect on March 21, 2014 and applies to all commercial establishments that sell perishable or nonperishable goods including, but not limited to clothing, food, and personal items directly to the customer. Retail establishments do not include public eating establishments (standalone restaurants, delis, takeout establishments, etc.) or nonprofit charitable reusers. Stores are encouraged to expend their remaining stock of plastic carryout bags by September 1, 2014 when ordinance enforcement begins.

"The Agency wants to assist grocery stores and retailers in the transition away from single-use carryout bags," said Henry Mikus, Executive Director of the Sonoma County Waste Management Agency. These Bag Fairs, conveniently located around Sonoma County will focus on showing examples of compliant recycled paper and reusable checkout bags that can be ordered from local distributors or directly from manufacturers. Agency staff, including bi-lingual staff, will also be present at the events to answer any questions and to provide free resources such as store placards and bi-lingual posters.

As defined in the ordinance, Paper checkout bags are bags that contains no old growth fiber and a minimum of forty percent (40%) post-consumer recycled material; are one hundred percent (100%) recyclable; and have printed in a highly visible manner on the outside of the bags the words "Reusable" and "Recyclable," the name and location of the manufacturer, and the percentage of post-consumer recycled content. Reusable checkout bags are either a bag made of cloth or other machine washable fabric that has handles, or a durable plastic bag with handles that is at least 2.25 mil thick designed and manufactured to withstand repeated uses over a period of time made from a material that can be cleaned and disinfected shall not contain lead, cadmium, or any other heavy metal in toxic amounts.
