No Licensing in Drone Survey RFP
The Virginia Association of Surveyors (VAS) recently contacted Virginia's Department of General Services expressing "deep concern" for a request for proposal (RFP). This multi-state solicitation, according to VAS President Kevin Shreiner's letter, violates Virginia's surveying law by including services that meet the state law definition of the practice of surveying without requiring a licensed surveyor, and requesting prices in violation of Virginia's professional services qualifications based selection (QBS) law, as well as similar laws in other states.

Registration Open for Summer Seminar

Michael Zmuda Reappointed to APELSCIDLA Board by Governor Northam
Governor Ralph Northam has accepted a VAS recommendation and reappointed Michael Zmuda, PE, LS, to a second term on the APELSCIDLA Board. He was recommended by VAS President Kevin Shreiner with an endorsement from the VAS Board of Directors. Shreiner mentioned that, "Mike's experience in the private and public sectors make him a valuable resource for the APELSCIDLA Board. Become a Licensed Land Surveyor with the John Foster School
In the twelve years that the Education Committee, the Surveyor's Foundation, and the Educational Trust have supported the John Foster School, we have seen over three hundred students go through the school. From the reports we have received back from the students, we believe a very large percentage have gone on to be practicing licensed land surveyors in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Read More.
"Father of GPS" awarded IEEE Medal of Honor
At the IEEE honors ceremony in San Francisco, Bradford Parkinson, a retired Air Force colonel who spent his life between maps and navigation systems, was awarded the 2018 IEEE Medal of Honor. Read More.
First Edition of ODS Available Online
The Historical Committee presented some of the first editions of Old Dominion Surveyor. The first edition describes Rear Admiral H. Arnold Kern who was going to address VAS members in 1965.  Read More.
First Surveyor of Washington County Recognized
Col. Robert Preston worked as the first surveyor of Washington County, receiving the commission in 1779 from Thomas Jefferson, who at that time was Virginia's governor.

NGS Seeks Comments on Coordinate Reference System
NOAA's National Geodetic Survey (NGS) will establish the State Plane Coordinate System of 2022 (SPCS2022) as part of the transition to the 2022 Terrestrial Reference Frames (TRFs). SPCS2022 is the successor to previous versions referenced to the North American Datums of 1983 and 1927.  Read More.
