Attendees Rate Convention as Highly Relevant
|
Nearly 350 industry professionals attended SEAA's 45th Convention and Trade Show in Myrtle Beach, S.C., in April. Attendees came from across the country, representing companies that are based in at least 30 U.S. States.
Education sessions covered topics from AWP standards to Vets becoming ironworkers. According to a post-event survey 87.5 percent of attendees found the topics presented during convention to be highly relevant to their job.
New during the tradeshow was an outdoor exhibit area for equipment. On display was an AC45-127S crane from Altec, a 660SJ telescopic boom lift from JLG and United Rentals, and two Magni telescopic handlers from Blue Hat Crane and ML Cranes & Equipment.

The Steel Erectors Association of America (SEAA) announces the winners of its annual Project of the Year for steel erection contracts topped out in 2016. Five companies in four contract level categories were honored at the 2017 Annual Convention and Awards Gala in Myrtle Beach, S.C., last month. Entries are judged by an independent panel of experts representing a broad knowledge of structural design.
The winning projects demonstrate the range and complexity of steel construction in the United States. Two of the projects were for government installations with extremely tight tolerances and high-level security clearances, while the others were more traditional high-rise and big-box construction with congested job sites and tight project schedules. Increasing Awareness for Workplace Safety and Health
|
The Steel Erectors Association of America has partnered with OSHA, the National Safety Council, the American Industrial Hygiene Association, the American Society of Safety Engineers, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health for Safe + Sound Week June 12-18.
The event is a nationwide effort to raise awareness of the value of workplace safety and health programs. These programs can help employers and workers identify and manage workplace hazards before they cause injury or illness, improving the bottom line. Throughout this week, organizations are encouraged to host events and activities that showcase the core elements of an effective safety and health program--management leadership, worker participation, and finding and fixing workplace hazards. What's the Status of the Looming Crane Operator Certification Deadline

Cranes Today reports: "With the expiration date for OSHA's delayed implementation of its contentious rule on crane operator certification looming and no progress made on an amendment, NCCCO CEO Graham Brent has warned that the industry may face the imposition of a flawed regulation." New Research Reveals How, When, Why Construction Fatalities Occur
|
The Associated General Contractors of America with the Myers-Lawson School of Construction at Virginia Tech University undertook a study of every construction fatality over a three-year period. The purpose: to understand why, when and how construction fatalities occur.
Findings have now been released in a report titled Preventing Fatalities in the Construction Industry. Some findings reinforce existing safety practices, while others are contrary to long-held assumptions.

Survey Says: Only 3% of young adults plan on construction as a career
|
The survey, conducted by the National Association of Home Builders, says of those who consider construction do so for the good pay and the idea that it allows them to obtain useful skills.

Charlie Johnson Receives William Davis Service Award
In recognition for his service to the steel construction industry, the Steel Erectors Association of America (SEAA) has named Charlie Johnson the recipient of the William Davis Service Award. The association's highest honor, it is given in memory of William Davis, who held board and committee positions with SEAA in the 1980s and 1990s. Johnson, retired Vice President and General Manager of Steel Performance Inc., Greensboro, N.C., has held officer and board member positions with the association, including President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Long Range Planning Committee Chairman. Steel Erection Bid Wizard Introduces Interface with Design Data SDS/2
 Due to the growing presence of 3D digital models in all disciplines of the construction industry, Steel Erection Bid Wizard and Design Data's SDS/2 have teamed up to extract primary steel information from the 3D model.
This data can now be imported directly into Bid Wizard, eliminating the need to take off primary steel from 2D drawings.

NCCER's Hard Hat Heroes Expands Credentials for Navy Seabees
Hard Hat Heroes has released 36 Seabee alignments to its credentialing portal for military veterans. Through the portal, transitioning service members can apply for NCCER credentials tat mirror their military training. The U.S. Navy alignments include steelworker, utilitiesman, builder, equipment operator, construction mechanic, and others.
