Croquet Play Day in May!

May 24th from 12:30 - 4:30
on the Village Green

It's time to just have fun in the sun.

Come on out and join in a game of croquet, have something to drink and eat and enjoy the company of others.  No experience necessary.  We'll have three games set up and offer instruction for those unfamiliar with the game.  It's really simply an opportunity to get outside, play games, hang out and have a great time!

Wearing white is a tradition in playing croquet.  Give it a try!  Or, do the vintage NW thing and wear some groovy vintage clothes.  Just another fun way to make it all a true special occasion.

The croquet is free!  We will also have vendors here to offer food and drink.  Gilgamesh Brewery and Wandering Aengus will offer beer and cider.  Island Girl food truck will be here with delicious, local goodness for noshing.

Put it on your calendar - Croquet Play Day, Sunday, May 24th from 12:30 - 4:30

The Goats are Returning
They're coming baaack to keep the invasive weeds away

With the improved weather and increased sunlight the knotweed and blackberries are coming back from the first goat grazing.  We've cut them back, but are gonna hit them with goat power once again!

The date at this time is uncertain since the Yoder Goat Rental is out in the field and can't say for sure when their goats will wrap it up and be ready for us.  Rachel believes they'll come out to graze at Pringle Creek Community in mid May.

Feel free to come on out for a visit!  Call 503-315-1055 if you'd like to make sure you don't miss 'em.

May Gardening

May flowers are bursting - and its time to plant those veggies!

Early this month is definitely the time to get your vegetable garden started as you trim up your flower beds.

Mother's Day weekend is the traditional time in this region to put in your veggies.  If you want to grow peppers and tomatoes (who doesn't like garden-fresh tomatoes?), keep them clocked for a while to increase the heat.  Walls of water help with that, too.

Slugs, slugs, slugs...  If you don't want them, don't mulch.  They love that.  Instead, use diatomaceous earth or put copper wire rings around the base of seedlings.  They don't like crawling over either and each tool really does help keep them away.  Of course, beer traps are worth a try OR visiting your garden at night with a headlamp so that you can catch them in action.

Straub Environmental Center's Lecture Series: Oregon's Hidden Gem: Discovering the Largest Glacial Cave System in the Lower 48
Wed, May 20, 7:00pm - 8:30pm
We love our community partners and Straub Environmental Center is one of them.

Check out May's lecture:
Leading a team of explorers and scientists on two expeditions to Mt. Hood's Sandy glacier, Brent McGregor and Eddy Cartaya successfully organized teams to survey and map over a mile of cave passages beneath the Sandy Glacier and collect samples of rock, soil, water, ice, and tree sprouts during this rare window of opportunity to study a glacier from the inside instead of the more conventional surface studies.

Join them at Straub's Lecture Series at the Salem Public Library, Louk's Auditorium Wednesday, May 20 from 7:00 - 8:00 pm
