Dear resident,

Thank you for your support. I invite you to read this month's newsletter to be informed of matters that concern you as well as community events in your area. Hurricane Season starts June 1 through November 30, please look through the hurricane guide to make sure you and your loved ones are ready and prepared. The hurricane guide 2016 provides you with information to ensure your safety before, during and after a storm.
Honor Our Military and Veterans this Memorial Day
 

Memorial Day is about honoring all our heroes who have fought and died to protect the precious freedoms we enjoy today as Americans. Let us never forget their sacrifice. If you would like to pay tribute to our heroes there will be Memorial Day services throughout the County including at Triangle Park, West 3rd Street and Palm Avenue in City of Hialeah at 10am, Woodlawn Park Cemetery, 3260 SW 8th Street at 11am and Veterans Park, 10190 Northwest 33rd Street in City of Doral.
Legislation News



Intership program offered to students at MIA 
Commissioner Diaz sponsored legislation to provide university and college students 
the chance to work as research interns at Miami International Airport. The County will partner with Florida public and private institutions of higher learning to place students in unpaid internship positions at MIA and other County-operated airports to conduct ground research. Each participating institution will select between five and 10 students annually to take part in the program. The resolution passed on May 17th at the Board of County Commission meeting.
 

New Veterans Affairs Medical Clinic in Homestead   
Commissioner Diaz sponsored a resolution  urging the United States Congress and Department of Veterans Affairs to allocate funding for a new veterans affairs medical clinic in Homestead to serve active duty, reserve and retired military personnel in South Miami-Dade County.

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, Commissioner Diaz surprised the teachers at Sweetwater Elementary School with free coffee and donuts  on May 6. Commissioner Diaz spoke with the teachers and thank them for their dedication to our children. Thank you and keep up the great work! 
Commissioner Diaz at "Doing business with the Military" Workshop
 
On May 20, Commissioner Diaz, who also serves as the Chairman of the Miami-Dade Military Affairs Board was honored to welcome more than 100 businesses at the "Doing Business with the Military" workshop at Hilton Miami Airport. The event was sponsored by the Military Miami-Dade, a program of the Beacon Council.
Free-Fur-All at Miami-Dade Animal Services

Miami-Dade County Animal Service is having a Free-Fur-All with waived adoption fees on dogs over four months old and all cats and kittens from now through June 11, 2016. The Free-Fur-All waived fee promotion also applies to all off-site pet adoption events hosted by Miami-Dade County Animal Services. For more information on Free-Fur-All , please call 3-1-1.      
Projects in District 12


NW 87th Avenue from NW 25th Street to NW 36th Street
This project has been initiated to improve the roadway surface and driving conditions. The scope of work includes the following: milling and resurfacing, adjustment of valve boxes and manholes, ADA Ramps and connectors and pavement markings and signage. Construction is expected to be completed September 2016.

West Flagler Street from W 107th Avenue to W 118th Avenue
Project will improve the roadway surface and driving conditions. The work will include milling and resurfacing, adjustment of valve boxes and manholes, ADA Ramps and connectors and pavement markings and signage. The project is expected to be completed September 2016.

NW 43rd Street and NW 74th Avenue
Project will help with flooding and drainage improvements. The scope of the work consists of the construction of a storm drainage system, consisting of exfiltration trenches and solid pipe along with drainage inlets and storm manholes;as well as roadway restoration. Project is expected to be completed June 2016.

 On May 5, Commissioner Diaz participates at the City of Doral's
"National Day of Prayer" event. 

Commissioner Diaz at the 35th Annual Police Memorial Ceremony at Tropical Park on May 5.
Commissioner Diaz speaks at the MIA Asian Task Force meeting at Miami International Airport on May 10 about the successful trade mission to China and the interest of China's three leading airlines for a nonstop service to Miami.

On May 24, Commissioner Diaz speaks at the Hurricane Preparedness press conference informing residents to be prepared for Hurricane Season which starts on June 1.


On May 25, Commissioner Diaz attends a press conference hosted by the Miami Super Bowl Bid Committee after the NFL awards Super Bowl LIV to Miami in 2020. Super Bowl LIV will be played at Sun Life Stadium. Commissioner Diaz sponsored legislation in support to bring the Super Bowl back to Miami for the 11th time.
Commissioner Diaz attends the "Wall of Honor" unveiling ceremony at Miami International Airport on May 26.  The wall honors the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces who have given their lives for our country since September 11, 2001.

Free Zumba classes at North Trail Park

The Miami-Dade County Parks, as part of their health and fitness initiative, will be offering free "Zumba Gold" classes to residents age 55 and older at North Trail Park Community Center, 780 NW 127th Avenue.  "Zumba Gold" mingles fun and energetic music with lower impact movements to improve balance, flexibility, cardiovascular health and muscle conditioning. SR 836/826 Construction

On November 30, 2009, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Six in partnership with the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) began a reconstruction project of the State Road (S.R.) 826 (Palmetto Expressway) and S.R. 836 (Dolphin Expressway) Interchange. Now that construction has begun, there will be many upcoming lane and ramp closures on the Dolphin Expressway.
