From the Library Administrator

National Library Week (April 12-18) was marked by wonderful moments of community celebration. On April 15, School District 99 opened its annual student art show in the Woodridge Library Gallery with a reception and award ceremony. Families of the artists and supporters of the school district's Fine Arts Departments proudly filled the lobby, celebrating the creative work of local students.

Circ. staff reading giant
One of our favorite "shelfies" features Circulation staff members examining an unusually large book.

To celebrate National Library Week members of the Woodridge community were invited to share a picture of their favorite bookshelf--and many of you did! We thank everyone who participated for giving us a glimpse of local bookshelves and inspiring others to pick up a favorite novel or to explore the works of recommended authors. The entire collection of "shelfies" is now available for viewing.

April also saw the installation of a new library catalog that has resulted in some unexpected database issues affecting books on hold and patron access to library accounts. Woodridge Library staff members deeply appreciate the patience of patrons during this time of transition. Please see the New Catalog Update in this newsletter for more information.

Each May we hold a "Volunteer Appreciation" luncheon to recognize the dedication and creativity of our many volunteers who work with us to provide quality library services. This year volunteer Bea Stanton has reached a milestone of ten years of service to the Woodridge Library. Congratulations Bea!

A final note, Summer Reading Program registration for children, teens and adults will begin on Monday, June 1. The summer edition of the print newsletter, Library Leaves, will have programming details and is expected to be delivered to mailboxes in mid-May.

New Catalog Update

A new library catalog is now in place at over 70 libraries throughout Illinois. We thank you for your patience as our library and the libraries we partner with in the SWAN consortium work through issues related to moving item records and accounts. Be assured that the SWAN catalog team is working around the clock to correct these issues as they arise. Patrons may experience some intermittent problems accessing the library catalog while the database is being repaired.

The innovative features that the new catalog offers are necessary for quality, 21st century library service provision. The benefits of the upgraded catalog will outweigh these early challenges. We apologize for any inconveniences and encourage you to speak with a staff member if you experience a problem.

Please call 630-964-7899 for the most up-to-date catalog news or to discuss your library account. Questions can also be directed to [email protected].

Art Gallery Showing
May's Featured Artist: Mary Yezek
Woman reading with unexpected 3 dimentional books - collage/art by Mary Yesek Mary Yezek, Woodridge resident, is an artist of many mediums.  In addition to working in the traditional, two dimensional mediums of acrylics and pastels, she enjoys creating art from everyday objects such as toilet paper tubes, labels from cat food cans and envelope liners. Mary's talented use of these unconventional materials results in highly imaginative, three dimensional or sculptural works of art. Patrons who come to the Library regularly have seen her clock-face collages decorating the walls near the computer work areas on the main level.

Mary will exhibit a variety of art works throughout the month of May in the Library Art Gallery.  She will be available to discuss her techniques and answer questions during an artist's reception in the lobby of the Woodridge Public Library on Friday, May 8 from 6 - 8 p.m.
